Subject: Hawaii County Redistricting
Aloha mai,
Please reconsider your proposal to exclude Hamakua as a district in the County of Hawai' i,
according to the recommended, Commission Plan A.
By splitting the Hamakua district, and placing the split near Honoka` a,
theHamakua Coast would effectively be rendered inconsequential. Taking into account
populations and registered voters in the new districts it is likely that the new Council District 1
would be represented by someone from the Hilo side. Likewise, Honoka` a in the new Council
District 9 would likely end up being represented by someone that comes from Waimea.
Hamakua has a rich agricultural history and enjoys a rural way of life. It cannot be effectively
represented remotely from Hilo and the dry side of Waimea. The issues that face this area of the
island are vastly different from those facing downtown Hilo and areas of West Hawai` i such as
Puako and Kawaihae. Hamakua deserves full representation on the County Council, not partial
representation from multiple Council Members in far off places.
Thank you for taking the time to hear the many supportive testimonies from the community of
Hamakua. Please keep Hamakua intact!
Aloha,
Verdean K. Pahi' o
