Subject: Re: Special Meeting of the Redistricting Commission
Chair Siracusa and members of the Redistricting Commission,
The Old -Boy System is alive and well in Hawaii County. A councilman wants a favor so he goes to the ILWU
Local 14Z they do the grunt work of making a phony grass -roots campaign for a fake issue, while the mayor's
appointed hack on the redistricting commission does the dirty work of slipping it through while lying about the
real reason. That's the recipe that has hobbled this island for so many years and if this gerrymandered plan
goes through, will screw it up again.
It is crystal clear what happened here - it was orchestrated by Onishi, who was afraid of running against
Yoshimoto, so he sent email to the union, clearly illegal email, whether or not our Old -Boy Prosecutor
prosecutes this. Everyone knows it's not right -just like Hokulia being allowed to call 10 million dollar homes
'farms, "just like 10 years ago when the redistricting commission gave Hilo politicians three safe seats by
screwing Puna and Homokuo. This time it looked for a while that things would be different. The laws were
changed to force the commission to do their job fairly. Now, if this goes through, the Kenoi- appointed
commissioners will join the rogue's gallery of people who have made us a laughingstock of political
backwardness.
Ms. Siracusa, no matter what you think your lifetime legacy of civic participation should be, if this goes
through, unfortunately, you will forever be known as the person who let this blatant and clearly illegal attempt
to subvert the process go through.
And you should not worry about the redistricting process being put into limbo by correcting this attempted
gerrymandering. Even if it takes a year and we have elections based on the current districts, we have to get
this right. We cannot let those who would game the system think that they can get away with it. Stale Onishi
should be prosecuted, not rewarded. And the unions need to stop being lap -dogs for their Old -Boy masters.
We must not let this happen again. It makes a mockery of our laws. To have a system where one repugnant
person like Onishi can subvert the whole system with one email to the ILWU is intolerable. Do not let them get
away with it. It will just encourage the next sleozeboll.
Sincerely,
Matt Binder
