The West Hawai‘i Civic Center is located mauka of Honokohau Boat Harbor next to Kealakehe Parkway in North Kona. Twenty-two county agencies and one state agency will be located at the center including the Mayor’s Office, Hawai‘i County Office of Aging, County Council, Motor Vehicle Registration, Office of Housing and Community Development, Real Property Tax, Mass Transit (Hele-On Bus Service), State of Hawai‘i Department of Health, Department of Parks & Recreation, Elderly Activities Division / Coordinated Services for the Elderly and other agencies. There will also be a satellite CSE office located at Yano Hall manned by a CSE staff to provide easier access for seniors located in the Kealakekua / Captain Cook area. The upcoming new year will be one full of exciting changes for CSE. TAX SEASON COMING SOON Even as CSE and AARP prepare for the coming tax season, we recently took time to celebrate the tireless efforts of the AARP Volunteer Tax Aides and specifically to honor Setsuko Fukushima, who has faithfully provided leadership to this project since 1990. AARP continues to look for Tax Aide Volunteers who can assist seniors with their simple tax returns. All necessary training will be provided for free. If you are interested please call us at (808) 961-8777. If you are a low income senior living in East Hawai‘i who needs help filing your 2010 tax returns, you can call CSE to schedule an appointment after January 3, 2011. For the past 7 years, Pilar Asia, a dedicated and loving senior companion has helped vulnerable seniors maintain their independence through her work as a senior companion. She respects and honors those under her care, always treating them as the individuals they are. On any given day, Pilar escorts them to the doctor, pharmacy, library, church, clubs, community activities and the laundromat. She is knowledgeable of programs and advises qualifying seniors. At the April 2010 Foster Grandparent (FG) Recognition, Grandma Hilda DeCosta was honored by her teachers with a beautiful poster. The teachers on either side of Hilda are reading words forming an acrostic of her name with many thoughts of appreciation and descriptions of HildaÓs assistance in their classroom. Hilda serves as a FG at Hilo Union School. All 16 FGÓs were recognized and received awards and mahalos for their love and care. The day surpassed all our expectations and the 200 seniors in attendance had a TREAT! We would like to acknowledge Nico, Carla and Jeff for partnering with us and making a huge effort to make it all happen. As a reminder, the furlough Fridays are the 1st and 3rd Friday of the month. Senior Center by Margaret Ellen- stein( Pictured back left) Above, a sample of their work. 6 Information and Assistance (808) 961-8777 Kupuna News 2010 Hawai'i Kupuna Softball and State Senior Citizens Softball Tournaments The 36th Annual Hawai'i Kupuna Softball Tournament was held on July 14-15, 2010 at Kailua Park. Twenty of the leagueÓs twenty-two teams participated in the two day, four division tournament. An opening ceremony attended by Mayor Billy Kenoi, State Representative Cindy Evans, P & R Director Robert Fitzgerald, and other dignitaries tournament at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 14, 2010. The following two days were filled with many exciting games in all the divisions. In the Division I championship game the Onomea Rangers defeated the Honom Rockets, 7-3. Onipa'a Iron Birds, Kupuna Pride, and Local Boyz went undefeated to capture first place in Division II, Division, III, and Division IV respectively. Kupuna News October-December 2010 The 35th Annual Hawai'i State Senior Citizens Softball Tournament was held August 3-5, 2010 at the Maui War Memorial and Keopolani Parks, in Kahului, Maui. Twenty of the Hawai'i Kupuna Softball League teams participated in this yearsÓ three-day, six division, forty-nine team tournament. There were many thrilling and competitive games with the outcome decided by just one run. On the final day of the tournament the Waimea Paniolo took home the D Division championship with a win over Ka Nani O Honoka'a. The Honom Rockets soundly defeated the Guavas of Maui, 15-3, for 3rd place in the B Division, the Onipa'a Iron Birds put on a batting clinic by defeating the Toros of Maui, 30-18, for 3rd place in the C Division, and the Waikea Seniors were edged out of the E Division championship by the Maui Monarchs with a score of 8-9. The weather in Maui was great, our hosts ran a fine tournament, and our island teams had a grand time playing the game they love. A big mahalo to the businesses that allowed our volunteers to solicit at their stores. MAHALO RSVP VOLUNTEERS Kupuna News October-December 2010 The RSVP Program is sponsored by the County of Hawaii and by a grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service. The program is administered by the Parks and RecreationÓs Elderly Activities Division. All volunteers serve from their hearts and give freely of their hours. Last fiscal year 1,975 volunteers served 165,295 hours at 219 volunteer stations island-wide. Heartfelt thanks goes out to all of our volunteers who contribute for the betterment of our communities.
