Ms. Fran Takamiyashiro, originally from Oahu, is the new West Hawai‘i CSE Program Director who started on December 01, 2008. CSE’S NEW WEST HAWAI‘I CSW I Janice Klingenberg, joined Kona’s CSE Ohana as a CSW I on November 17, 2008. Originally from Illinois, Janice has lived in Kona for the past 20 years. She loves living in a place that allows her to Cycle and Swim 365 days a year. Big Island FGP Recognition The FGP’s Annual Recognition is a time of expressing thanks, mahalo and appreciation for a job well done. Mr. Ron Mata, State Director and Irene Shaneff, Program Specialist from Oahu (shown on the far right) were guests and assisted in thanking the ladies. Debbie Nakaji, Director of Services for Seniors (on the end of the second row to the right) did a great job as Mistress of Ceremonies. The event was also attended by representatives from the various schools where the FGP’s give classroom assistance. Over all, they were thanked in grand style. Four Plane Rides in a Day Pictured above are the FG’s on the island of Kauai along with Pat Kalili, Program Specialist for the Big Island and Derrick Ariyoshi, newly appointed State Director for the FGP. Following the resignation of the Program Specialist on Kauai, Pat took on a temporary interim assignment of working with the FG’s there. It was fun, challenging and logging in flying time along the island chain was part of the day’s work. A new Specialist for Kauai is now in place and Pat is settled back into only Big Island tasks. Kupuna News 2 Information and Assistance (808) 961-8777 West Hawai‘i CSE Volunteer Recognition Luncheon This years’ West Hawai‘i Volunteer Recognition Luncheon was held on October 29, 2008, at the Rodney Yano Memorial Bldg. in Captain Cook, Kona. This years’ theme was entitled, “Autumn Fest“ and the event was coordinated by TA/Program Director, Junie Ann Kamoku, CSPA’s and staff, who were also assisted by the Elderly Recreation Services Program, Special Programs, and the Hawai‘i County Nutrition Program. The luncheon was held to recognize the efforts of our many dedicated volunteers who serve our elderly and program in West Hawai‘i. “WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICES!!!” Award Certificates, prizes, gifts, games (musical chairs), lunch and refreshments were the highlights of the event. Kupuna News 3 January - March 2009 East Hawai‘i CSE Volunteer Recognition Luncheon “Just Because…” was this years theme for the East Hawai‘i Volunteer Recognition Luncheon which was held on November 07, 2008, at the Kamana Senior Center in Hilo, Hawai‘i. Volunteers were treated to a out-door BBQ luncheon, gifts, prizes, and award certificates, which were coordinated by TA/Program Director, Christine Namahoe Loo, CSPA’s and staff. Kupuna News 3 July - September 2009 Elderly Recreational Services ELDERLY RECREATION SERVICES As we welcome in 2009, we reflect on another successful year. 2008 was busy and productive with more than 2,000 students attending over 100 classes, 2,800 seniors enrolled in a senior club, 30 district events and ERS volunteers doing more than 4,300 hours. We bid a fond “Aloha” to ERS Program Director II Dennis Onishi. He is the new County Council Member for District 4. Best Wishes to him as he embarks on a new endeavor and ask that he continue to support our EAD Senior Programs. ERS Is The BEST!!! Kupuna News 5 January - March 2009 Class & Senior Club Happenings... “ SUPPORT LONGEVITY!!! ” Want to meet and talk stories with other Kamana Senior Center members….. Come join us in “WISDOM 101”, a talk story session to share laughter and the joys of living. The group meets every Friday from 3:00p—6:00p in room RR, no sign up necessary, simply show up and socialize! Kona Karaoke Club under the leadership of Rose Onaka welcomed seniors from Kohala to join in with their talented group of singers. A day spent with song, fellowship and fun at Yano Hall! District 2 County Council member Donald Ikeda (pictured with lei) was honored and recognized at the Kamana Senior Center for his tremendous support for EAD. Most noteworthy was his involvement in the installation of traffic lights at the Kamana and Kinoole intersection. MAHALO for all your KOKUA!!! The Senior of Honokaa were “THE MUSIC” of the Annual Peace Parade. Kupuna News 6 Information and Assistance (808) 961-8777 Special Programs Results of 26th Annual Hawai‘i Kupuna Hula Festival The 26th Annual Hawai‘i Kupuna Hula Festival had a new venue this year, the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort and Spa hosted both the competition and craft fair on September 24th and 25th. Close to 300 participants from 17 halaus, including 7 from Japan, 1 from Korea, 1 from Maui, 2 groups from Oahu and 6 groups from the Big Island, gathered to participate in this years “Na Hula Piha ‘Eu” Naughty and Nice Hula competition. Over 1,600 people attended the two day festival to watch the 17 halaus compete for top prizes in 6 categories. The individual Tutu Wahine and Tutu Kane dances took place on Wednesday night, followed by the group competitions in the Mixed, Wahine, Kane and Overall categories on Thursday night. During each performance, 5 judges rated the dancers on overall appearance, presentation, hand gestures and costumes, among other categories, using a 1-10 point scale. The top three winners in each of the competitions received prizes generously donated by local sponsors: First Hawaiian Bank, Big Island Candies, Waikoloa Land Co., Kukio Resorts, LLC., Akami Photographics, Hawai‘i Island Festivals, and Hawai‘i County Economic Opportunity Council. This year’s individual winners included; third place in the Kane category George Kaikana, second place; Eugene Kealoha Keama, and first place individual Kane winner; Keoni Castillon. The individual Wahine winners were; third place Sissy Polikapu, second place; Lorraine “Lahela” Higa, and first place individual Wahine dancer was Pi`ilani Rodrigues. Thursday night’s Kane group winners were; third place Na Leo Nahenahe O Pohai Kealoha, second place; Hula Halau O Pua Loke, and first place Kane group winners were Na Kupuna O Ko`olau. Third place in the group Wahine division was Na Kupuna O Ko`olau. Second place, was Hula Halau O Kawananakoa, and first place winners Ke Ola Pono No Na Kupuna. The three winning halaus in the mixed group competition were; third place Na Kupuna O Ka`u, second place; Na Kupuna O Ko`olau, and the overall mixed group winner, Leo Nahanahe O Pohai Kealoha. The title of overall group winner went to Hula Halau O Pua Loke for the second year in a row, with their overall point score of 1,496.20. The 27th Annual Hawai‘i Kupuna Hula Festival is scheduled for September 16-17, 2009 at the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort and Spa. Kupuna News 7 January - March 2009 Hawai‘i Kupuna Softball League The 2009 Hawai`i Kupuna Softball League season will be starting on February 21, 2008, at various fields around the island. This year the league is expanding to twenty two teams, the largest league in the State of Hawai`i. A new league game format will be utilized this year with the twenty two teams divided into East and West divisions for the first round of play. In the second round of play, which will start in June, teams will be seeded into three divisions according to their won/loss records. Following the two rounds of league games, teams will be seeded for the 35th Annual Hawai`i Kupuna Softball Tournament which will be held tentatively on July 14-16, 2009 at Kailua Park. The finale of the softball season will be the Hawai’i State Senior Citizens Softball Tournament held on Oahu at the Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park, August 4-6, 2009. "TOGAN" CONTEST! The seniors at Aunty Sally's in Hilo are challenging other nutrition sites to grow their own produce. Under the leadership of Community Service Worker Roger Pflum, each senior received togan and other squash seeds, along with helpful advice - just look at the results! Growing your own produce is healthy, as you can choose what fertilizers and pesticides you use. It can also save you money, as buying fresh fruits and vegetables can be expensive. We all look forward to eating healthier, and taking better care of ourselves in the New Year. If you are interested in a gardening project, see your Nutrition Site Manager. KEAAU'S IRON CHEF The Keaau Nutrition Site and the Keaau Senior Club meet regularly to share recipes, and tips for creating healthy, delicious dishes. This year's East Hawai`i Primetime Wellness Fair attracted over 800 seniors! Here, staff from our co-sponsor, First Hawaiian Bank, help to run the prize filled slot machine. Over 50 vendors provided information and free services. Seniors also enjoyed learning how to make tofu from Audrey Wilson, and how to maintain your memory from Arlene Ige of the Alzheimer's Association of Honolulu. The 2008 Primetime Wellness Fair opened with entertainment from the Moani Keala Ona Pua group, under the direction of Maile Canario. The Young At Heart line dancers also performed at the fair, along with members of Golden Motion, Silver Sneakers, and the Happy Tappers. At the Primetime Wellness Fair, seniors learned about new services such as Direct Link and could get their blood pressure checked at the Heart Association booth. Hawai`i County Economic Opportunity Council Kitchen Helper/Packer Dolores Cainglit (2nd fr. 1.) loves her job, her co-workers Tracy Evangelista and Candace Ferreira and Crew Chief Mary Medeiros. Enjoying her job at the County of Hawai`i Division of Motor Vehicles for a year now as a regular full-time Clerk II, Harriet Owens is seen here happily scanning and indexing documents for the database. A regular part-time Kama`aina Kids Group Leader for two years now, Valerie Toler helps Special Needs Children with their homework at Waiakeawaena Elementary School. DOE certified, Valerie enjoys assisting these children. Enjoying her regular full-time Airport Driver job at Dollar Thrifty for the past 1 ½ years, Cynthia Dunn has just gotten a raise and is very happy to be able to buy a new car now.
