Coordinated Services for the Elderly
ASSISTING SENIORS IN OBTAINING BENEFITS
Coordinated Services for the Elderly is known for it's
outstanding Transportation and Outreach Services,
yet also provides much more assistance behind the
scenes to help the seniors of our community.
Through its Information and Assistance process, CSE
helps seniors with complicated applications for
low- income and elderly housing, Food Stamps, State
Financial & Medical Assistance, Low Income Energy
Assistance Program, Social Security & Medicare,
Advance Health Care Directives, Care Home
Placement, Long Term Care options, Citizenship,
State I.D. Card, In-Home Chore services, Case
Management Referral & IDT Members, among others.
Through the years, CSE has enhanced the lives of
the seniors of the Big Island, & their families, by
finding the help they need to live independently with
dignity. Many seniors are unaware of benefits that
may be available, or what they may be entitled to
receive. CSE works together with other service
agencies of the Aging Network to ensure that the
seniors of Hawai`i County needs are met.
Through CSE's intake and assessment process, CSE
staff identifies clients needs, completes appropriate
forms & applications, and /or makes the appropriate
Referrals to meet the needs identified. Pictured above
is East Hawai`i's Karen Kotaki, CSW III doing an in-
home assessment.
AIRS CONFERENCE
Christine Namahoe-Loo, CSE East Hawai`i's
Program Director (TA), attended the AIRS (Alliance
of Information and Referral Systems) Conference in
Houston, Texas, on May 16-22. Christine Namahoe-
Loo will be a frontlines person for the ADRC project
which plans to open in later 2008. Participation in the
conference provided valuable information and
resources on "Intake & Referral Systems." She
gained valuable information on the service
delivery (understand & implement in a friendly and
efficient manner), interventions and
development of I &R (Information and Referral).
Much "Mahalo" to the Hawai`i County Office of Aging
for their support and funding in sending Ms.
Namahoe-Loo to the conference where she
received her AIRS-A Certification.

YOU'VE COME OF AGE
"CSE's new Alpha Card I.D. System"
If you are 60 years of age or better, then you are
entitled to get a little break for reaching this
milestone. Coordinated Services issues the Senior
ID Card for the County of Hawai`i. This is your
passport to savings at many merchants and
businesses around the island. When you register,
you will be given your ID card and a discount
booklet which lists the places where you can get a
break on the price of goods and /or services.
Discount amounts vary, and the listing is updated
Periodically. Your ID card will have your picture on
it, which is helpful to people who do not have a
driver's license and need a picture ID.
CSE will no longer have to take your picture with a
Polaroid camera, cut & paste, and laminate the
card. CSE has embarked on a new "Alpha Card
I.D. System" which takes about 15-20 minutes
(completion of the registration form, inputting and
processing the ID card), and it is more cost
efficient.
For information call the Coordinated Services for
the Elderly at 961-8777 in Hilo or at 322-1812 in
Kona. The only requirement for an I.D. Card is that
you be 60 years of age or over and a resident of
Hawai`i County.
CSE would like to thank the County in purchasing
the East Hawai`i I.D. system, and Councilman K.
Angel Pilago for the West Hawai`i I.D. system.
"Mahalo!!!"
L -R: West Hawai`i's Terence Terada & Walter Fisher,
CSW Ill's, practice on the new Alpha Card I.D. System.
CSE VOLUNTEER
RECOGNITION LUNCHEON
Coordinated Services for the Elderly will be
recognizing the efforts of the many dedicated
volunteers who serve our elderly citizens around the
island. Whether they are washing a van, driving a
van, answering telephones, filing, interpreting,
typing, assisting in the issurance of Senior I.D.
Cards, taking messages for staff, or
"swamping" (helping clients in and out of the vans),
CSE volunteers are an integral part of our
operations.
As CSE staff always say, "We couldn't do it without
you!!" This year's West Hawai`i CSE Volunteer
Recognition Luncheon will be held on October 29,
2008, and the East Hawai`i Volunteer Recognition
Luncheon is scheduled for November 07, 2008.
CSE volunteers will be contacted and informed of
the place and time of the event.
