"On the Road Again"
Yes, the Foster Grandparents took in
Some interesting sites and gained new knowledge during the recent
DOE School Spring Recess
Kathy Arnold and Rudy Serain offered a very
helpful reading workshop held at Hilo Union
School Library. Many children's books were
available to peruse. The FG's each read a book
and shared how they would use it with students
in their classroom.
The celebration, honoring King Kalakaua, was
enjoyed — also the day of the Merrie Monarch
Parade.
Lorraine Godoy, second from the left on the
back row, spoke with the FG's about the
many services offered the community by
HCEOC.
Behind the scenes at KTA Superstore
The bakery, the meat 'market', the coool
vegetable and fruit 'room' and the large
warehouse were all on the tour. To see how a
large supermarket operates was very
enlightening.
The 'sites and sounds' of Hilo Harbor proved to
be fun, interesting, but also serious. Mr. David
Waldran, head of Harbor Security, spoke,
showed a video and gave a guided walking tour
of the premises. Since 9/11 many new security
measures are in place to keep the Harbor 'safe
and sound'.
A selection of veeeery expensive sports
cars was parked at the Harbor. These were
on hand for the 'rich and famous' to take
them for a spin around the island. The FG's
could only afford a photo with a car.

MAHALO MAILE!!!
Following her retirement on May
01, 2007, Meredith "Maile"
Marquez, volunteered her services
and was placed on an 89-Day
Contract continuing to service the
elderly in the Kohala District, even
after being involved in (2) major vehicle accidents
(which was no fault of hers). It took CSE nearly

2008 Moku O Hawai`i Senior Olympics
"LET THE GAMES BEGIN"
(Cover Story)
The journey happens every four years..... It accomplished it's travel once again, and it arrived at
a new and different site than the last. The commemorative "Torch" traveled around the Big
Island, and on June 18th with members of the Honokaa Senior Club, it arrived at the host site of
the opening ceremonies ....the Honokaa Gym and Complex.
From the wee hours of the morning, over 300 Big Island seniors were transported island -wide
from different towns to participate in the opening festivities, as well as, in six final events: Darts,
Frisbee Throw, Ground Golf, Hanafuda, Rummikub, and Jan-Ken-Po.
The thrill of competition, excitement, and fun filled the air. At the end of the day, the 1st, 2nd, and
3rd place winners of these six events were proudly presented their gold, silver, and bronze
medals for their successful accomplishment.
The excitement of the Moku O Hawai`i Senior Olympics is still on-going for finalists in six of the
19 FINAL events. The final six events scheduled in July are:

From our hearts .... MAHALO!!
The EAD — Special Programs extends our deepest appreciation to the following sponsors
who without their continued generosity and support towards the Big Island seniors, it
would not have been possible to successfully implement this event: First Hawaiian
Bank, Big Island Candies, Waikoloa Land Company, & the Honokaa Senior Club.
Much kudos and mahalo's also extends to the best ever, energetic, and supportive EAD
staff, volunteers, and especially to Marie Yano of the Honokaa Senior Club, who without
their assistance, the 2008 Moku O Hawai`i Senior Olympic would not have been possible.

Summer Produce
Program is Here!
We all know that we should be eating more fruits
and vegetables every day — it's good for our
health. We also know how expensive it can be to
buy fresh produce.
This summer, the Senior Farmer's Market,
commonly referred to as the Summer Produce
Program, returns to our island, and will be
providing fresh, Grade A produce to seniors (60
and older) who are on limited incomes.
If your annual income is under $22,126 for an
individual, or under $29,785 for a married couple,
you qualify for this program.
To register, you need to bring 2 things. First, you
need proof of age such as your driver's license,
State ID or senior ID card.
You also need to bring proof of income such as
last year's Federal income tax return, or your
Social Security statement.
Registration forms are available at all nutrition
sites, as well as Coordinated Services for the
Elderly, and Food Basket offices.
