Senior Club and Nutrition Club Presidents attended the annual meeting where Elderly Activities Division Programs discussed their past six months of activities and upcoming events. In attendance, was special guest, Mayor Billy Kenoi. The event was topped off with lunch at the West Hawai‘i Civic Center Pavilion. Mahalo Mary Chun for 35 Years of Excellent Service to Hawai‘i County Seniors Mary first started working for the County of Hawai‘i in the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program under Nancy Matsunami as an Aide in Laupāhoehoe. She then moved over to the Hawai‘i County Nutrition Program in Honoka‘a as a Nutrition Site Manager for 20+ years. Mary also assisted with the Elderly Recreation Services under George Yoshida. For the last 8 years Mary has been, and continues to be with Coordinated Services for the Elderly as a Community Service Program Assistant in Pāpa‘aloa. Mary treats all the seniors in Pāpa‘aloa as her own family. Mahalo Mary for all the years of loving, compassionate service! Tim Hansen, Mary Chun, Fran Takamiyashiro, Roann Okamura. CSE Awarded Contract with Sage PLUS to do Outreach to Seniors CSE staff will continue our outreach efforts to reach seniors who may qualify for special assistance with their Medicare benefits. If you are a single person whose income is less than $1,567.50 per month or a couple with an income of less than $2,116.25 per month you may be eligible for some special help paying your insurance premium and/or your drug coverage expenses. The S. Hilo office is located in the Aging and Disability Resource Center, lovingly known as ADRC or “The old Sun Sun Lau” in Hilo at 1055 Kino‘ole Street, Suite 106. Christine Namahoe-Loo, CSPA has been the coordinator of the S. Hilo district since 2003 and has been part of the CSE team since 1996. Helping to make sure operations run smoothly are 3 Community Service Worker III positions and 7 Community Service Workers I positions. CSW III’s are Karen Kotaki, Cynthia ‘Leihua’ Malani and Jun Ishimine. CSW I’s are Geraldine ‘Geri’ Lyman, Patricia Dunn, Sophia Iaukea, Arlene Ohara and Reyn Maeno. Two positions are currently vacant. Also helping out in S. Hilo are several RSVP volunteers including Charlie Kalahiki, Annie Aoki, Lillian Watanabe, Jo Yokoyama and Bonnie Aceret. There are two other CSE staff that you may not see out and about very often but who are an important part of the CSE Ohana as well. Zoey Bianchi is our Account Clerk and Lee Hasebe is our Data Specialist and is the person behind putting the Kupuna News together each quarter. Kupuna News 3 April - June 2012 Senior Companion Program The Senior Companion Program recently adjusted their income qualification for those interested in joining this amazing program. If you are at least 55 years old, willing and able to serve up to 20 hours a week providing companionship to seniors in need and have an income of less than $25,080 a year (or $33,860 for a couple) this is the program for you! If approved, you will receive an hourly stipend of $2.65 per hour, travel and meal allowance, free annual physical, free training, free supplemental insurance and a wonderful annual recognition celebration. This years Senior Companion Recognition Luncheon will take place on April 27th. If you are interested in getting involved in the Senior Companion Program please call CSE at 961-8777. Kupuna News 5 April - June 2012 SENIOR CLUB HAPPENINGS HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU Volcano Seniors celebrated everyone’s birthday at the Volcano Golf Course Restaurant and while eating, enjoyed a video of their 2011 adventures. Tea-For-Two With tea cups in hand and pinkies high, the ladies of Paradise Park Senior Club sampled delicious cookies, sandwiches and fruit while sipping tea. FRIENDSHIP DAY Pāhoa Seniors and Alu Like Puna Valentines Day was a celebration of love, sharing and friendship at the Pāhoa Nutrition Site. Pāhoa seniors sang and danced for each other, played “Name That Tune” and ate lots of delicious Hawaiian food and treats shared by all. Seniors on the go...... Seniors Strut into Healthy Competition ERS held its first annual Senior Strut 5k/1- mile fun run at Hale Halawai on Sunday, February 26. Runners and walkers between the ages of 55 and 85 came out to strut their stuff down Ali‘i Drive. Decadent awards generously donated by Big Island Candies were given to the top three male and female finishers in both the 5K and 1-mile races. This year, the league consists of twenty-four island-wide teams, made up of men and women of all skill levels, aged 55 or older. The Hawai‘i Kupuna Softball League is the largest league in the State of Hawai‘i. A split game format will be utilized this year with the twenty-four teams divided into East and West divisions for the first round of play. In the second round of play, which will start in June, teams will be seeded into three divisions according to their win/loss records and play games island-wide. Following the two rounds of league games, teams will be seeded for the 38th Annual Hawai‘i Kupuna Softball Tournament which will be held July 11-12, 2012 at Kailua Park. The finale of the softball season will be the Hawai‘i State Senior Citizens Softball Tournament held on Kaua‘i, August 7-9, 2012. The tournament co-sponsored by Big Island Candies, Waikoloa Kings Course, and the County of Hawai‘i, Dept. of Parks & Recreation, Elderly Activities Division-Special Programs, will be held Friday, May 11, 2012 at the Waikoloa Kings Course. This event is open to all Big Island residents aged 55 or older. Residents can enter the tournament as a foursome or individually. The tournament fee is $90 per person which includes greens fees, cart, lunch, and gratuities. Slots are available to the first 140 entrants on a first come first serve basis. Tournament format is 18 holes; low net with an established handicap index as of March 2012, the maximum handicap index is 40. All USGA and special course rules will apply. Golfers will be divided into 4 flights; men and women aged 55-64, and men and women aged 65+. Round-trip transportation from Hilo will be available for $6 per person and will depart from the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium. Registration began March 1st at the West Hawai‘i Elderly Recreation office (West Hawai‘i Civic Center, Bldg. B), Hilo Kamanā Senior Center, Kea‘au Community Center and by appointment at the Nā‘ālehu Coordinated Services for the Elderly office. Tournament fees must accompany completed registration forms to be confirmed. The deadline for submission of entry forms and payments is April 27, 2012. Completed forms and payments will only be accepted at the West & East Hawai‘i Elderly Recreation Services offices. For more information call Kelly Hudik at the ERS office in Kona at 323-4340. It’s Hula Time Again! The 30th Annual Hawai‘i Kupuna Hula Festival will take place September 12-13 at the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort & Spa. This year’s theme is “Eō e Lanakilakeikiahiali‘i” and is a tribute to the music of George Na‘ope. Tickets for each evening are just $10 per person. ALOHA LITO! Our good friend, Lito Asuncion, accepted a position with the Kaua‘i Agency on Elderly Affairs in January. For many years, Lito was a Program Planner with the Hawai‘i County Office of Aging, and was the designated monitor for the Nutrition Program. Lito has a Master’s Degree in Public Health, and used his expertise to make helpful recommendations for our program, and also made sure that we met our Federal and State contract requirements for both our meal sites and Meals on Wheels. In his new job, Lito will be monitoring community programs on the Garden Island. We wish him well. FUN IN KAPAAU Where are we? Kupuna News 13 April - June 2012 Three amigos Our best wishes go out to Walter Fisher, center, who recently retired from the Coordinated Services Program. Walter was our second Nutrition CSW in Ocean View, following Zachary De Bernardi, on the left. Zachary was a Senior Employee from 1986, and became the first Nutrition staff in Ocean View in 1989, staying until Walter was hired in 1999 and then becoming our Nutrition Site President. Dick Hershberger is our third, and current Nutrition CSW in Ocean View, providing “Aloha” from 2006. Banzai! for Bonsai! The Ocean View seniors were treated to a special tour of the Fuku-Bonsai Cultural Center in Kurtistown. Here, owner David Fukumoto explains more about their specialty, dwarf Schefflera bonsai, which is perfect for anyone who can grow houseplants! Below are some of the enrollees’ who have been successful in finding work after completing their training. From the top going clockwise is Chiko Arakawa working for Downtown Improvement Association. After completing the Ground Maintenance class at HCC Chiko has been instrumental in creating sustainable agriculture plantings in Hilo town. Can you identify some of his creations? If you are unable to provide the advance notice, the Elderly Activities Division staff will attempt to make a reasonable accommodation to satisfy the request as long as it does not impose an undue hardship.
