Attending: Andi Longpre, John Winter, Kate Sterling, Jerry Kotz. 1. Mahukona Beach Park update. Kate reported that the Mahukona Cat Caregivers are in the process of relocating the two cat feeding stations to the new location southward. The old stations are no longer and the new station is being developed. Their agreement with Parks and Recreation is that the move will be completed by Sept. 15. There will be no trough or feeding shelters and dishes will be in the open. Jerry and Kate reported that the trail to the new site is being worked on to allow reasonable access for those carrying food and water to the new site. Jerry reported that the Friends of Mahukona have been very busy. 10 -15 dump -truck loads of dirt have been delivered to the park by the County, and FOM members have sifted out rocks and trash and spread the dirt over the denuded main park area. They are bringing in sod as it is donated, are watering the area daily, and have planted several shrubs and small trees. They have re -tiled the shower floors, pressure- washed and painted the pavilion and restrooms, rebuilt one broken barbeque, and have broken up several large rocks to smooth out the campground and picnic area. Jerry says they will continue landscaping and watering, but they need lots more dirt. They will also repair two more barbeques. They are approaching the County to get signs to discourage camping on the grassy picnic area and cutting wood for campfires. Jerry and Kate agreed that the two groups were working together well on relocation and the path, that cat numbers within the park had reduced and that both groups were happy. 2. Water line mapping project update. Andi reported that she had arranged a meeting between our committee members and attorney Nancy Oppenheim to advise us on legal or liability issues that might arise during such a project. We meet with Nancy at 10AM, Monday, Aug. 13th at the Nanbu Courtyard. Based on her advice the committee will draft a memorandum of Understanding to present to Jim Watts of the Hawaii Rural Water Association and Kathryn Besio of the UH Hilo Geography Department at a later meeting to begin organizing the project. John reported that he had sent an email to both Mr. Watts and Dr. Besio to arrange a time and place for meeting with them. The meeting was adjourned at 5:30.
