The park contains two ancient Hawaiian fishponds, wetlands, more than 185 anchialine pools, coral reefs and archeological sites. In this dry area, the park’s cultural and biological resources are fed by, and depend on, the continued flow of fresh, clean water from the Keauhou Aquifer. Beginning in the late 1960s, Hawaiians organized to protect the area that now comprises the park from development. Because of the efforts of the Hawaiian community and the significance of the area, in 1978, Congress established Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park to preserve, interpret and perpetuate traditional Native Hawaiian activities and culture. In this talk we will discuss the establishment of the park, the biological and cultural resource of the park, activities currently taking place in the park and external threats to park’s biological and cultural resources.
