During her 36 years with the Elderly Activities Division, she has worked for the Retired Senior & Volunteer Program, Hawai‘i County Nutrition Program, assisted with Elderly Recreation Services, and for the last 9 years has worked for Coordinated Services for the Elderly providing compassionate care to the Pāpa‘aloa Kupuna. Mary is always with a smile and kind words for everyone she meets. She assists all Kupuna with warmth and care. Mary you will be missed…...…. Diane was born and raised in Hilo. She previously worked at Alu Like as a specialist in career development and guidance. In college, she majored in Psychology. Diane has worked in Hilo and Ka‘ū, but felt drawn to Kona because of her maternal heritage. In her spare time, Diane loves gardening, swimming, and sewing. In the past, Diane has cared for her elderly relatives and looks forward to working with the Kupuna in Kona. Welcome aboard Diane Kai!! CSE thanked our volunteers for their “Caring Hearts and Helpful Hands” with lunch, desserts, games, gifts, leis and prizes. Iris Yugawa was hired as the Program Director IV and Randell Kokubun was hired as the Program Director II. Both Iris and Randell bring a wealth of experience working with the elderly and community organizations. They bring a new vision to the section and will be an asset to help the program develop as we grow in numbers. Iris oversees the ERS/SP programs focusing on Kamana Senior Center and the sports programs and Randell is responsible for the senior clubs from Hilo to Honoka‘a and the Hawai‘i Kupuna Softball League. Their offices are located at Kamana Senior Center in room 1. Come by and meet them when time permits. A “BIG MAHALO” to all the dedicated staff, volunteers, friends and family who have helped me keep the program great in the interim. Eleven students under the instruction of Doreen Henderson graduated after completing all leis and cape requirements taking years of dedication. Kupuna News 5 January-March 2013 Class & Senior Club Happenings….. 2012 Ka‘ū Ground Golf/Bingo Turkey Trot Seniors from Ka‘ū, Pāhoa and Hilo enjoyed a windy day a the Nā‘ālehu Community Center playing 8- holes of ground golf and bingo for turkeys! Big winner for the day was Augusto Ballo of the Pāhala Seniors with the lowest score of 22 and a hole-in-one. Margaret Callen from Nā‘ālehu, also was a hole -in-one winner. Bobby Brigoli from Hilo and Nicolas Palmer from Pāhala followed with scores of 24. Carol Javar and Fely Villegas from Pāhala were the big turkey winners at bingo. Happy Thanksgiving! “Healthy Eats,” a healthy look at fast foods and a pupu challenge was held on September 20 at the Kea‘au Community Center as McDonalds and Elderly Recreation had Puna seniors up for a healthy challenge. Representing their clubs were, Annie Kaaukai from Pāhoa Seniors, with fresh Haupia, Lomi Salmon, Warabi Salad dishes; Beverly Shiflet from Volcano Seniors, with olive pup, Juanita Van Domburg from Mt. View Seniors, was first place with her healthy picata lettuce wraps; Sarah Togashi Kea‘au Nutrition with Tofu poke, and Marlene Yoshida and her tasty simple sadisadi. All ate a healthy lunch from McDonalds, deluxe chicken sandwich, toss salad and fruit parfait. Lapidary Class at Kamana Senior Center Maile Canario’s Halau performing at Hilo HawaiIan Hotel Senior Net Class Kupuna News 6 Information and Assistance (808) 961-8777 30 Years of Music Hula and Memories 441 participants from 22 halaus, including 5 from Japan, 1 from Okinawa, 2 from California, 2 from Maui, 1 group from O‘ahu, 1 Moloka‘i Halau and 10 groups from the Big Island, gathered to participate in this years “Eo e Lanakilakeikiahiali‘i” This year’s festival paid tribute to the music of one of its founders, George Naope. The Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa hosted both the competition and craft fair on September 12th and 13th. Over 1,300 people attended the two day festival to watch the 22 halaus compete for top prizes in 6 categories. The individual Tutu Wahine and Tutu Kane dances took place on Wednesday night, followed by the group competitions in the Mixed, Wahine, Kane and Overall categories on Thursday night. Na Kupuna O Ko‘olau During each performance, 5 judges rated the dancers on overall appearance, presentation, hand gestures and costumes, among other categories, using a 1-10 point scale. The top three winners in each of the competitions received prizes generously donated by local sponsors: First Hawaiian Bank, Big Island Candies, Kukio Resorts, LLC., Akamai Photographics, Hawai‘i Island Festivals, Kona Aerial Gymnastics, Halau Kala‘akeakauikawekiu, County of Hawai‘i Parks and Recreation Elderly Activities Division, and the Kupuna Hula Festival. This year’s individual winners included; third place in the Kane category Kananiokalani Neizman with Na Kupuna O Ka‘ū, second place; Kealoha Sugiyama dancing with Na Kupuna O Kohala, and first place individual Kane winner from Na Kupuna O Moana in Moloka‘i; Allen Diorec with 308.5 points. The individual Wahine winners were; third place Louise Alina performing for O‘ahu’s Na Kupuna O Ko‘olau, second place; Big Island’s Momi Sheehan from Halau Hula O Kawaimaluhia First place individual Wahine dancer from Kailua-Kona was Halaua Na Pua U‘i O Hawai‘i Julie Viloria with 311 points. Thursday night’s Kane group winners were; third place Ke Ola Pono No Na Kupuna, second place; Na Kupuna O Moana, and first place Kane group winners were Na Kupuna O Ko‘olau scoring 310.9 points. Third place in the group Wahine division was first time participant, Hula Halau O Kawananakoa from Keaukaha. Second place awards went to Kailua Kona’s Halau Hula Na Pua U‘i O Hawai‘i, and first place winners from O‘ahu, Na Kupuna O Ko‘olau won with 309.6 points. The three winning halaus in the mixed group competition were; third place Na Kupuna O Moana, second place; Na Kupuna O Ko‘olau, and the overall mixed group winner, scoring 308.7 points, Na Kupuna O Kohala from the Big Island. The title of overall group winner went to O‘ahu group, Na Kupuna O Ko‘olau, with their overall point score of 1,494.8. Na Kupuna O Ko‘olau The 31st Anniversary Hawai‘i Kupuna Hula Festival is tentatively scheduled for September 11-12, 2013 at the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort and Spa. Kupuna News 7 January-March 2013 2012 East Hawai‘i Prime Time Wellness Fair The 2012 First Hawaiian Bank East Hawai‘i Prime Time Wellness Fair was held at the Edith Kanakaole Tennis Stadium and Aunty Sally’s Lu‘au Hale on October 18, 2012. 786 participants from around the island took in a variety of information from 56 health and wellness vendors. Highlights were our own Young At Heart Line Dance group from Kamana Senior Center and “Living in Paradise” with George Yoshida and Derek Kurisu demonstrating tako pupu over salad and sushi rice. Annie’s Favorite Favorites The Nutrition Program has wonderful volunteers delivering Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors throughout Hawai‘i County. In Hilo, Mel Nakao, Lauren Nishimoto and Steve Yamami have volunteered for years, bringing cheer to our senior participants. Annie Yonashiro, whose Mom Betty Araujo had meals delivered by Lauren, is donating a portion of the proceeds from her latest cookbook to Meals on Wheels. This donation will be used to provide additional meals to homebound seniors on our island. Mahalo Annie - “Annie’s Favorite Favorites Island Style Cooking II” is OUR favorite!
