Subject: Letter of support for Designation of Highway 137 — The Red Road as a Scenic Byway
Dear Mr. Zevenbergan,
It is with great excitement that Puna Community Development Plan (PCDP) Action Committee
expresses its support for the efforts of Kalani (Sponsor) and KAPONO as they submit Highway 137 —
"The Red Road" for consideration of Scenic Byways Nomination to your organization. For more than
three years the PCDP Action Committee has been working with government, community leaders and
organizations in efforts aimed at implementing the action items of the PCDP.
Kalani and KAPONO are both organizations and leaders in their community and have specifically
taken on the task of PCDP sec. 4.5.3.f to improve Highway 137 (Red Road) as a scenic corridor.
KAPONO, having member representation all along Highway 137, conducted an extensive survey
where they confirmed strong local support for the Scenic Byways designation. We are confident that
under KAPONO leadership, community support will continue to grow as they work towards this
important scenic byways designation.
