Preserving pahoa from going "mainland" is very important - city beautification (non - commercialization) is very important H- Grave markers and plaque about sugar cane industry, please? More historical info please. H- Have talks at Museum in Pahoa so community knows our history. H- Hawaiian traditions should be cultivated now and in the future and not lost. H- Historic resources are vital to town character H- more Hawaiian culture preservation H- Native Hawaiians deserve most respect. H- There is a major lack of education to the incoming people who are moving into our town. We used to be a quaint, quiet peaceful town and now it is all about the boom. We have lost our cultural sense of understanding. There are no boundaries on the consideration and preservation of our kupuna iwi, arch. sites and special forsaken landscape. H- Need kupuna and hawaiians to have an active role in their Moku, not someone who thinks they know but an ancestor ohana like the Kaawaloa Ohana. Too many haloes in Leilani esp in the association try to change the rules to their mainland style of thinking. The Hawaiians here are upset that the association has too much power and needs to be audited and overseen with more Hawaiian horned input. H- Need more culture exhibits like City of Refuge in Konz side honaunau more bicycle cops H- need more exposure to public for cultural exposure H- other than Pahoa Museum, there is no recognition of our Hawaiian Culture & History H- The Hawaiian culture is an important part of our lives and the way we live. It is the reason many of us live here. We could always work harder to preserve more. We could Cultural and Historic Preservation Page 1 also spend more time working on the things that make our culture strong and supportive. H- THERE COULD BE A VILLAGE RECREATION WHICH TEACHES HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE, LIFESTYLS, ETC. H- there is a great sense of cultural history, but preservation can always be improved upon. H- There is not enough emphasis on the Old Hawaiian and Japanese cultural footprints in lower Puna. H- Using some history w/ so many transients and development. It seems the old time ? no longer live here. H- very important piece to tie the community together We honor the rich history of Hawaii and Pahoa keep adding more PAHOA TOWN INFRAESTRUCTURE PRESERVATION P- Buildings boardwalks need to be preserved P- Currently on our way to being the next Oahu! we must protect our cultural & environmental resources from over development. P- help fix up old buildings in pahoa town. make new structures adhere to historic views P- Historic cane shack buildings and boardwalks in town are in ill repair. P- Historical preservation brings tourist to photo, shop, eat. P- I enjoy the Museum. Preservation of old bldgs is appreciated P- I love the way Pahoa looks just like it did when I first came here ... and probably much like it looked over 50 years ago. P- Important to preserve historic look of Pahoa and the historic contributions of its diverse cultural communities. P- It would be nice to see downtown restored before the termites take it all. P- It's a shame that the buildings downtown aren't restored but seem to just be falling further into decay. P- keep our building healthy P- Keep the look of main street. All new construction or renovation must look like existing main st street architecture P- let's do more! P- maintain old bldgs - build new bldgs in old style - landscape & plant P- need designated historic buildings P- Need Historic Signage / Need to Preserve Historical buiding P- Need some face lifts in Pahoa but generally pretty good. P- Need to keep the charm and uniqueness of Pahoa. P- Need to preserve the historic and vintage buildings and wood sidewalks in town. This is the character of Pahoa that can be our legacy for future generations. The bypass Cultural and Historic Preservation Page 2 around town was built to help preserve the old town and now the new town is moving to the highway. What gives ?!? P- Needs to look like people care. "Vintage' lighting for e.g., hanging planters, flowers, good murals, perhaps for historic info... P- nice old town, but bums make it scary P- ORIGINAL DOWNTOWN IS PRESERVED BY A LACK OF ECONOMIC GROWTH P- Pahoa could be gorgeous w /work. P- Pahoa has lots of cool stuff -good to officially preserve plantation architecture, old stone walls P- Pahoa needs to preserve its cultural identify. Most important is some sort of architectural design review committee. The new Long's should be better landscaped. You should be able to cross the street safely in Pahoa, The volcano sign on the Cash and Carry needs to be preserved at all costs. P- places are being destroyed instead of restored P- Please see above -- important to maintain buildings that can be maintained or repaired, and address with deconstruction rather than demolition those that are beyond repair. This work is a benefit to the whole community, and for the costs and labor to be shared somehow would be valuable. Needs some out -of -the -box thinking, eg, by applying training funding and labor of trainees or community service or ...? P- Preserve "old west" flavor with facelift of entire Pahoa town, all buildings REQUIRED TO COMPLY. Deal with slumlord owners. Creation of Performing Arts Center. P- Preserve Old Pahoa! P- Sal Luquinn has done wonderful work with the Akibono but everything else is nothing P- save ALL the older buildings I say. Let's clean 'em up and slap on a coat of fresh paint P- Some of the nice character of old town Pahoa should be preserved P- Some of the old buildings remaining in Pahoa are charming, but are a nightmare for people with disabilities to access -- government road is so narrow it does not allow for adequate pedestrian access, does not allow for any landscaping, parking along it is inadequate. Buildings need to be moved further back or parking moved off the street to allow for real side walks, bike paths, ADA accessibility, and still retain the historic charming old buildings. P- The historic preservation is acknowledged which feels good, but could use better upkeep and clean. P- There needs to be more effort to preserve what is here and not develop the shoreline and Pahoa Town to keep a sense of history and place as intact as possible. P- This should be an important part of the plan. P- Try keep old style architecture! Too many metal buildings P- Unfortunately the only historic preservation we have had in pahoa is the belief the rest of the island has of us and that is pahoa is pretty much a crime and trash infected population that has never been worth spending money on. This attitude has got to change and it must change with the community itself. P- Want historic preservation for Pahoa Cultural and Historic Preservation Page 3 P- WE would love to see old town Pahoa, have a facelift. Keeping the face fronts of the buildings, to stay within the old hawaiiana feel, we fell in love with here, but have the buildings refurbished from the insides out. The electric wiring is way outdated and not safe and the sidewalks, especially on the Kaleo's side of the street are in need of great repair, to keep people safe as they walk the sidewalks and need to be wheelchair accessible. P- Would like to see further efforts toward preservation of classic homes, restoration wooden sidewalks w /disabled accessible ramps, curb cuts, etc P- Would like to see restoration of old buildings and boardwalk, and regulations to preserve Pahoa's old style P- Would like to see the old plantation, boardwalk style of Pahoa retained. P- Yes- preserve & re -build SAVE "WILD WEST" STYLE, Keep Modern out of main town EXISTING MUSEUM RELATED COMMENTS M- appreciate museum. M- Don't see much of that. The museum has become an internet cafe'. M- I don't know of any cultural or historic locations within the Pahoa Regional Town Center except for the museum across from Luquin's. So I guess we could use more. M- I don't see a lot of host - culture preservation - -and that is one of the most wonderful things about Hawaii. Perhaps the museum with train town history is a start. M- I like the old buildings and the Museum is great M- much need- Museum is helping w/ cultural influence M- Museum does some justice... Hope to preserve landmarks M- Museum in downtown a nice improvement M- Museum in Pahoa - very nice. M- Museum is great. We need more. M- Pahoa Museum, no other cultural or historic site in Pahoa. M- Pahoa Museum is helpful M- The maps of old town Pahoa in the museum are instructive, only if one looks up. If only these streets and walls could talk. M- The museum in Pahoa is a good thing but kinda boring. It's great that the Akebono theater & main Pahoa village are preserved. M- The museum is a wonderful addition. To bad the Thai restaurant painted over a very historical mural. The Pahoa of Yesterday( ?) should be available at the Museum and book store among other stores in the area. M- The museum is great. M- The Pahoa Museum didn't have much history about Pahoa and the growth of the sugar cane and ohia wood mill lumber legacy. M- The Pahoa museum is a nice start. The remodeling of the theater is also a step in the right direction Cultural and Historic Preservation Page 4 M- There is the museum. Some of the older buildings seem to be undergoing preservation. M- What else is there, besides the museum? (the Museum is lovely by the way, and i appreciate it very much) EXISTING NEW COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENTS RELATED COMMENTS (MALLS) N- i loved the way pahoa was 20 years ago ... the malls are destroying the beauty of pahoa... N- It's good because nothing has been done - thank God - preserve Pahoa's old style - keep it old style for new construction (big box stores suck) N- Junk doesn't need preserving. Just because it is old doesn't make it valuable. N- Letting Long's, Burger King and Chicken is not (underlined) right N- No more chain stores! N- NO MORE CHAINS!! (e.g. Longs, KFC) PLEASE - local shops & stores ONLY. This will help preserve the culture. N- Pahoa needs a form -based code that maintains that all new buildings keep the look and feel of the current downtown area. Longs, KFC, Burger King, are abysmal in their corporate look. N- The new shopping center (Longs, Burger king, KFC) really ruin the historical look of the town. I am very glad the new Museum opened. Maybe there can be classes and presentation on the 'old ways "? N- There are still old buildings and some sense of history around (main street, Akebono, etc.), however is there any security for that or can it just be bulldozed away by private developers? New developments are ugly (Long's mall, Malama mall) and do not enhance Pahoa. Could be any highway strip mall anywhere. N- Ugly chain businesses ruining historic charm. N- With all the commercial development, Pahoa is losing it's charm and cultural identity as a former cane town. GENERAL PRESERVATION COMMENTS O- Could be lots worse. Thank you for doing what you do. thank you for not trying to make it look like any place else. 0- getting better but need more community involvement O- Good enough. O -1 hear they don't kick out students for doing hula anymore from Kamehameha Schools. O -1 like the old- school feel of the neighborhood. O -1 would say this item seems to be handled well as I do read about some of it in the news paper. O- ? ? ?? Don't know of any O- better Cultural and Historic Preservation Page 5 O -1 dislike it when the past holds up the future. We need to live and plan for tomorrow not the past. O- None... nothing is really preserved in town... perhaps not really worth preserving either though. O- Pahoa is one of a kind and SHOULD STAY THAT WAYM Preservation should take precedence over any corporate retail interests. Pahoa should develop an annual two - day arts and culture fest that could create an economic boost as it draws other islanders and visitors. O- In my opinion, cleanliness supersedes character /preservation. If we can preserve culture /character and make things nice through a remodel, fantastic. If however preserving culture /history means leaving old town the dump that it currently is ... I say tear it all down and bring in 10 more longs and malama markets. I'd rather have clean. O- Is this Hawaii, or is this the USA? Because the overthrow of Hawaii was illegal, real 'preservation' cannot exist, unless the USA ends it's illegal occupation. O- needs more O- No listen to the people. Wanted steam vents Not Kahakai O- Not much news in Pahoa area that I know of. O- Our culture all mainlanders from Nebraska. We moved here to tell you what to do. O- Pahoa not living up to it's potential. O- Pele seems to be doing her role in that... O- SEE 12 O- Sure 0- Thanks to Uncle Robert and Panchos effort on the lower puna road 0- This could always be improved upon on this island. 0- This would be nice to have, as the history of Pahoa is colorful and shows determination and spirit. O- very good vibe, family oriented and friendly. Could use some funds funneled into young adult programs! Also more parenting classes for parents.... O- we do not have any of this in pahoa but only a small center. O- We have so much more to preserve O- What preservation? Cultural and Historic Preservation Page 6
