HomeMy WebLinkAboutEmployment consolidatedEmployment & Economic Opportunity EAWhat are the employment opportunities in Pahoa? What does Pahoa need to create more job opportunities? ENWhat type of Business should Pahoa try to attract What are the employment opportunities in Pahoa? There's more opportunity in lower Puna than in uppper Puna because of the businesses. There should be more business opportunity in upper Puna Not much out here - have to commute to Hilo for work opportunity — sucks Very few people have money and very few people are hiring people for jobs. There are hardly anyjobs that pay more than minimum employment opportunity- whats that? Just awful not a lot of optiuons, especially for the young people trying to get a start. Jobs are in high demand.and low in opportunity What a joke. I take a bus to Kona nothing For our children- Hard to find employment We need Job Opportunities in this area. lack of employment opportunities for new comers of the island Not enough jobs, businesses in Pahoa have no kokua r/t hi overheads Employment and economic activity Page 1 Very few family wage jobs in Puna in general, and Pahoa area in particular. We need zoning that allows for small business incubation sites to grow jobs for Pahoa and Puna. Being Retired I have been lucky where I did not have to try and find a job in Pahoa Town. Again it is a small town and like any other small town Employment Opportunities have to be very limited. no jobs no business need factory Hardly any jobs opportunity as far as I can tell. People need to commute to Hilo to find employment. Employment is very poor, too many people standing on the streets, especially by the banks and Pahoa Cash and Carry. Lower then poor. Not too many opportunities. This place needs more jobs No jobs open here NO JOBS, COUNTY INSISTS ON SHUTTING BUSINESSES DOWN Very few jobs available; not sure what can be done about it. NONE youth /seniors need jobs Nonexistent Wonder what to do - -very little work in area Where are there jobs & economic opportunity has gotten better but need planning badly many areas in deficit None Obviously very poor, many people in Puna are living below the poverty level. Most people who do work have to go into Hilo which costs a lot in gas money these days. There is not really any employment opportunities for our youth and families in general. There are too many people living in Pahoa. Employment and economic activity Page 2 Jobs just are not available in Pahoa except the retail shops, civil service, and restaurants. Many more people than there are jobs. limited employment opertunities Well, lets see, you can either work at the grocery store, or a restaurant OR ...... very few other local businesses within the village site ..... MOST people STILL seem to commute to Hilo.... Very few to no jobs in Kalapana Not a fault of Pahoa, however. All small towns have limited job opportunities. job seeking is impossible There is no economy in Puna. It's all drive to Hilo. there is no jobs or work in pahoa, only work trade on farms for no money. no one has any money because there are no jobs. jobs need to be created and properly managed to maintain a healthy working environment,. not much UGH, nearly all of us who work have to drive into Hilo. I happen to work in Honokaa and live in Puna but i don't thiink bringing commerce into puna is the answer either! very few jobs available Absolutely poor. At this time poor, but I believe the town has great potential as a tourist destination. very limited opportunities for employment in Pahoa town. Though the employment situation isn't good, if someone wants to work there is always a way. You're kidding, right? There isn't any of which to speak! Pahoa needs another fast junkfood place like Custer needed another Indian There is little to no economic opportunity or jobs available. To be self - employed becomes prohibitive due to the taxes (Federal includes your total social security contribution), state taxes AND THE State's GET combined make it really hard to afford self employment and it is therefore discouraging people to create their own jobs which I think is CRAZY. Employment and economic activity Page 3 Improving w /Growth of Pahoa Long's and fast food along with Malama Market complex has increased local jobs and shopping wonderfully. There is none. What does Pahoa need to create more job opportunities? Bad fix up town & make it more welcoming for shoppers & merchants & people will come ... which will make more local jobs. No more fast food places please! requires more business development More frequent markets, please. Stimulate vendor sales and small businesses More enviornmental friendlyjob beavtification, garden's outside courtyards What is that? Too many rules for new business & rent in Pahoa town is to expensive thats why its empty! Increase cottage industry.Let folks use the unoccupied buildings on Main St. for nominal fee. cover insurance, utilities. Need job switchboard and more money for starting new buisneses need EPA- sponsered Green Power Community; need other incentives to start green (renewable, healthy) energy production plants need a business chamber /visitor bureau w/ meetings and events to get people envolved None, plant soybeans, cane, spices, fruits ro jobs. Need to clean it up to attract $, jobs, etc. Although it would be great to have more employment opportunities, we don't need more fastfood businesses in a community that is already struggling with health issues. Farmers markets and other opportunities like that are much needed. More geothermal sites would really help provide living wage jobs. Employment and economic activity Page 4 Get more establishments like KTA for more jobs. We need KTA here in Pahoa. Malama prices are so expensive There are not enough jobs in the area to support the population. It has gotten better in the last 10 years, but there are people that want to work and cannot. There is also a big problem with the county and state about setting up a business or acquiring property to build a business. It seems that only the rich are able to set up business. There needs to be more land dedicated to building business and creating an economic opportunity for our people. Many cities in the USA provide subsidies and tax breaks to business that develop in economically challenged areas. I would like to see the Pahoa area develop incentives to business and economic growth. Especially in light of the energy and gasoline prices. I think people would love to spend their money in their own community. If businesses come in they need to be required to put in sidewalks, landscaping and architectural guidelines More restaurants! Would like to see co -ops encouraged. Businesses that include communications via satellite could be an adjunct to the tourist business and provide jobs to locals that could span to the mainland and the rest of the world from Pahoa Making Pahoa self contained, meaning no need go to Hilo for everything, would help increase jobs. Also encourage agriculture. Start job programs for welfare recipients and give them a job in ag, food prep, childcare. provide childcare. Set up a big daycare center in pahoa. Essential to keeping things local and minimizing the HWY 130 gridlock would be development of economic incubators, more office space and the ability to create a village that truly welcomed people. (Sidewalks, non - motorized zones, etc.) LET US BRING IN SOME GREEN INDUSTRIES (SOLAR) Pahoa should be a major tourist attraction... but it's not even on the list. It's a treasure of old time Hawaiian life that visitors should be supporting and enjoying The county creates roadblocks for new businesses versus promoting development of businesses in the community. Could be better, but, please no more fast food, limit gas stations, etc. Pahoa town could use a face lift to attract more businesses. There are so many artistic persons in this area, shops for them to sell, or, maybe a larger area store with stalls for individual vendors Employment and economic activity Page 5 Need a community building for employment training opportunities and a small business incubator. Some good stuff if you're a farmer, well capitalized, or a self starter. Otherwise, not so many jobs are available, a shame that some storefronts remain empty, employee -less. But the answer is not more non -local retail and fast food development, but a comprehensive plan to incentivize entrepreneurial ventures. Small business planning and fundraising skills, budgeting and accounting, cooperative marketing and development of local timeshare are all workshops and classes that could be taught locally, relevant to Pahoa's and Puna's realities. Ongoing local economic development classes, forums and learning communities could help create a strong, local economy that's not at the mercy of the global economy. An opportunity is here to support independent retailers and restrict mega stores from the metro center. There is not much out there. Encourage more farmers markets open during week ... a good venue for families to earn and to save on shopping. I would love to see a Costco in the Mountain View /Kurtistown area. It would create a lot of jobs and provide low cost groceries /misc. goods /gas and other services. What tvne of Business should Pahoa try to attract Very few can find jobs and when they do come up like Kentucky Fried Chicken, very poor choice for our health conscious community! We don't want big business in the area that would bring employment in - we need to stay as a bedroom community of Hilo In my opinion, there should be more office space, so people will do business in Pahoa instead of driving to Hilo. Local opportunities come thru small business only. Commuters must need help figuring out how to ride - share, judging from the small response to the free parking at Makuu Market. no more big box stores in Pahoa! Employment and economic activity Page 6 KFC, Longs Drugs, and Burger King do not provide economic opportunity for the community beyond minimum wage jobs and unhealthy food and cheap low quality products. We need to do better for the legacy we leave to our community. We need to encourage high quality small business development and discourage chains like Longs and KFC that diminish the quality of our community health and environment. Allowing Burger King, KFC and I understand McDonalds now near the post office into Pahoa is sad. So NOT what the community needs. This does not support a healthy way of life and development should foster a healthy way of life. Mainland franchise chains like Burger King and KFC don't provide benefits and pay very low wages to local residents I have more than enough work personally, but many people have no job... We need farm coops here for people to work and get food and sell the extra. do only want to see forms of development that do not degrade environment like to see aid to small businesses, not big chains Employment and economic activity Page 7
