Building Codes/ Planning
B- Allow domes, yurts, bamboo & other alternate housing to florish- change building
codes.
B- Anyone can throw up any kind of structure, without adhering to building codes. This
will have a very negative impact when these places fall down, burn up, blow away
B- Bill 270 harms poor people. Need better housing options (allow cabins, etc.)
B- county housing has rules that do not mash out with the people that live there.
B- housing is overpriced and of poor quality, with the County's adoption of Bill 270 it will
mean the prices will go even higher and housing stock will probably reduced for being
"substandard"
B- make building code amenable to alternative designs
B- It's important that home owners are not over taxed or enslaved by unreasonable new
zoning laws that make it impossible to keep up their homes. New or rebuilt homes
should be able to apply for a more econimical sesspool on a case by case basis. They
should not have to replace perfectly good windows with prohibitively expensive
materials and designs that are irrelevant in our climate. I'd like to see a village style
town -home community for low income people.
B- Most of the houses in Pahoa are several decade olds and add to the charm of the
town. I did not move to Pahoa to have a cold, modern, mainland town. New houses
and businesses should be required to blend into the architecture of the area and not be
ugly like Long's, KFC, and Burger King.
B- Much run down and sub standard housing in this area.
B- Need incentives for people to fix up their houses and especially the old houses that
have character and contribute to the vintage feel of old Hawaii in the old part of Pahoa.
Without that old town part, Pahoa is just Longs Drugs and KFC, which is disgusting and
makes me want to move away from here and not encourage people to even visit this
town that has such poor zoning and planning. How could we let this happen to Pahoa
that it is becoming a strip mall. Longs Drugs has way too much signage. It is the most
visible and yet ugliest builing in town.
B- needs better control on building codes enforcement
B- Poor overall appearance
Housing Page 1
B- Small villages connected by bicycle paths built for pedestrians and non - motorized
vehicles
B- the building code forces the cost of home out of reach $244,000.00 is NOT
AFFORDABLE WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO OPT OUT AS A SMALLER HOME IS BETTER THAN
NO HOME
B- There are many nice houses in Pahoa, including many old ones that have been
maintained or have been lovingly renovated, eg the Konanui's house. Imagine
connecting some dots with older housing: using renovation of reparable homes and
deconstruction (vs the extremely disrespectful demolition) of homes beyond repair as a
means to train /educate for the buildng /construction trades, and at the same time
employ experienced, competent carpenters. Deconstruction vs demolition would also
reclaim some reusable materials, and at the same time prevent a lot of material going to
landfill.
B- There are too many houses which don't meet the county building code. Enforcement
is lax.
Elderly/ Senior Housing
E- Need elderly housing, variety housing,
E- need low income elderly housing

E- Where is there any senior housing in Pahoa?
E- WOULD LIKE HOUSE FOR SENIORS
Homeless Shelters/ Housing
H- A funded and covered campsite would be nice for the occasionally homeless. People
could live in the houses that exist.
H- A homeless shelter /halfway house is sorely needed as well as access to more
frequent meal service and showers.
H- County Housing wonderful assistance to families but many homeless or can't afford
rents. (NOTE both "Fair" and "GOOD" were checked on the form. The lower value
"FAIR" was entered in field.)
H- homeless shelter
H- homeless shelter
H- i dont see any hornless shelters or battered womens shelters.
H- need homeless housing
Housing Page 2
H- no options for homelessness
H- would like to see empty houses made available for homeless families
Low Income Housing, Affordable Housing
L- Affordable, decent housing choices for the plethora of disabled and low income folks
here is extremely limited. People enjoy the open air off grid lifestyle Puna is famous for,
and we should keep as many choices open for individuals and families as possible. But
we also need to better accommodate those with special needs, with the goal of
independence rather than institutionalization.
L- Could use more low cost family housing.
A lot of housing available, especially with the bad housing market, rent isn't always
affordable for low income individuals though.
L- Dire need for housing within social security income budget
L- lots of county housing, lots of empty houses
L- low cost housing
L- Lower prices so everyone can live their dreams, owning own house.
L- more low budget housing please
L- more multi family
L- NEED MORE AFFORDABLE HOUSING.
L- need more housing rentals that will except county housing section 8
L- need more informartion to comment, if we are speaking of public housing then there
is little or none that I know of
L- Need subsidized housing units as Section 8 wait lists are up to 5 years long. So many
empty houses in Puna, so many homeless, there has to be a way to provide low income
housing.
L- need to have more access to affordable housing including decent rentals.
L- Needs more affordable housing for low income families and the elderly.
L- No affordable housing available
L- More affordable housing is necessary along with the services that come with them.
L- good housing resonable priced homes for all income
L- Not enough affordable ,disability - accessible hsg
L- Not too many opportunities especially affordable for families
L- Ohanas should be permitted again in these tough economic times.
L- own home
L- Own home need a poor person/ 2 right facility
L- Section 8 is nice but holds people back
L- Seems as if affordable housing for our socioeconomic demographic is a challenge.
L- so many need housing and adequate housing within the budget is not available
L- Something for everyone - -to me.
L- standard and affordable housing is in short supply.
L- The condition of the homes and the rise in cost for rental properties has not taken
into consideration the low income status of this community
Housing Page 3
L- Too many section 8 housing in the district.
L- Very challenged for poor income families. Houses are under cared for due to low
economic resource for home owners.

P- I think that our housing around Puna is very good because most familys have houses
P- Its fair i guess but i dont live here
P- Just because something is poor or fair doesn't mean it needs improvement.

Housing in General: Others
D- I would like to see more housing in the Pahoa Town area. it is very limited.
D- Extremely limited housing in town.
P- Great enviorment! !
O- ALTHOUGH IT IS THE CHEAPEST PLACE ON THE ISLAND, IT COULD USE MORE.
O- Available
O- Do we need more apartments?
O- Don't understand what about housing is supposed to be good or bad.
O- I have never tried to look for a house in the area in question so it would be hard for
me to say what condition housing is in Pahoa Town. I have my own house and very
satisfied and I do not intend to move into the town area of this survey.
O- It seems there is housing available. There needs to be Hawaiian Home Lands housing
built and available for families to move into as soon as possible.
O- I've never lived in Pahoa
O- My cat owns his own house in Nanawale Estates
O- Need safe place for troubled teens to go - ASAP
O- no comment
Housing Page 4
O- no over crowding! no new development in town. no urban overcrowded slums!
O- no too many houses visible
O- Not sure what *type* of housing is being asked about here, so I can't give an opinion.
O- Single family houses in abundance
O- Some houses are all bust up, needs improving.
O- thank you George Bush!!
0- There is a great variety of housing types, available housing, and WAY, WAY too many
empty homes. Absent owners are not necessarily good neighbors.
O- Unknown
O- Wlth the cost of a home purchase in this market, along with the price of vacant land,
AND the number of homes that are rentals, I don't get the impression that housing is a
shortage ... and it doesn't really seem like the Pahoa area would really be supportive of
condo living....
O- We would like to see housing remain mainly outside of the Town area itself, but can
also soo that there needs to be a comittee for repairing homes that do exist there.
O- Housing in Pahoa is housing in Pahoa. I wouldn't want it improved to be like housing
in a bigger town. And, it should be safe and adequate nonetheless.
M- multi - family housing
M- Pahoa needs mult- family zoning so that enough population density can exist in town
to actually create a village and reduce car dependency.
T- Hostels beautiful & well maintained
T- Need rezoning for and encouragement of B &Bs, other overnight lodging etc.
