Make Pahoa a pedestrian- oriented town. Needs boardwalks /sidewalks on main corridors (main street, post office road, etc.) Due to narrow streets, bike paths best placed on a separate route(s), separate from Pahoa's main corridor. We need more safe walkways. The sidewalks are small and there are a lot of uneven steps, cracks, ect. There are no bicycle paths to speak of. There should be more accomodations for pedestrians. It is very dangerous crossing the street when walking in Pahoa. Need sidewalks on Main St. It's a little better, but, there are still places where people have to walk in the road. I don't think there are any side walks except for directly in Pahoa Village, which are incomplete & run -down. Sidewalks only in a few places, for rest of town peds are on roadway with inadequate shoulder; no markings for peds or bikes, rought /uneven pavement edges. we really need to upgrade on our crosswalks so people dont get bang as often.. Less than two -lane roads are particularly a problem (Post Office, Cemetary, Ka'ohe Homestead). It would be better to have covered walkways on both sides of the road near all of the restaurants, since it rains so frequently. The Old Town area lacks sidewalks in most places. Bikeway needed I was struck by a car in Phoenix when a man ran a red light to fracture several of my ribs (when uninsured, they don't count the number), si I tend to see what could be a bicycle lane (some curves on the 132 between Nanawale and Pahoa) as downright suicidal. In town, there is such a narrow area to go, one has to wait for traffic to pass. Bike paths - would make town more safe and accessable More bike paths with green -belts around them.. NEED bike paths from subdivisions to Pahoa. need to paint roads for mopeds & bike & walkareas especilly 130 Bike Path - Whats up with those scooters? no bicycle paths are really continuous Bike path needed on 132 bicycle paths Bike paths should connect all the estates to Pahoa as a hub. The Use of European cities ideas of bike path planning with a Hawaiian touch of practicality and harmony with the environment could be used. Amsterdam and Berlin are just a couple of cities that use bike and pedestrian walkways to connect all parts of the metro area to the city or town hub. Again do we want to be the same as Honolulu or be a town area to be copied and admired for planning growth with fiscal responsibility and the health of all the citizens of Pahoa, present and future? more, wider bike lanes Kahakai is pretty scary on a bike. Now that it is smooth, people go faster than ever and there is no room for a bike, same for road through Pahoa, though the speed limit is slower. Very inadequate. Bike paths!!! Many of the roads offer wide shoulders... but within the entirety of Pahoa area .... say like down Kahakai Blvd there DEFINITELY could stand to be a bike / walking path ... and to think that the gov. paid to have that road resurfaced 2 times this past year and couldn't even widen it just a weeeeee bit to offer that bike path .... whats up with that? There are none along the Red Road so I feel really unsafe to bike with kids. Need more bike paths and better signage so that riders feel safe. People drive too fast on the roads, so there needs to be a clear bike lane(s). In the tropics where people COULD and WOULD ride YEAR =ROUND if it were safe, and GAS is so expensive, WHY NOT IMPROVE? It is dangerous to have so many people using road shoulders with just a few feet between them and the cars flying by. Very poor on this one. We want REAL bikepaths! There is no place to walk when you are going from the village center to Malama, or the post office, or even 7 -11. If it raining ? ?? the puddles are so deep you can get drenched by a car just driving by and there is no place to go. need sidewalks or designated walkways, at least gravel or cinder, to be able to walk safely from one end of town to the other. Hopefully this will be extended. I absolutely adore the wooden sidewalks. They add such a sense of nostalgia that you do not even see on the mainland. Didn't know we had anything special for bikes. The covered walkways need to be preserved, and connected to in all possible cases. This could be our niche - -a really good /great restaurant town that is weather - friendly. I have bad knees, have to walk on the street between the museum and kaleao's Impossible to navigate on crutches or in a wheelchair, main street Pahoa is a dangerous place to walk. As a older American riding a bicycle from my home to Pahoa would be a lot to be desided. First off at my age I am not riding out in the rain and again with some of the drivers on the road I would be taking a huge risk riding on the streets of Pahoa Town. I have seen busses and large trucks just flying through Pahoa Town so I would say not a healthy thing to do. Desperate need for good, safe. well lit and handicapped accessible sides walks. Safe bike paths through all of Pahoa is very needed Shameful condition. Regulations demand handicap parking, but there is nil handicap walking. Sidewalks and walkways are decent. Not very friendly to wheelchairs though. barely there, roadways are dangerous and narrow in Pahoa town, barely having room for vehicles, let alone pedestrians or bicycles. Many places are not ADA accessible. Safety (most comments involve safety issues, but these comments indicate the level of concern) Difinite need for improvement here. Again, not to glorify automobiles, but we all use these roads. The auto driver seems to think himself King of the Road and I have been yelled at to get off the road, when walking. (I walk at the very edge of pavement. Safer than in the dirt with rocks, uneven surface and drop offs.) Perhaps signage to remind drivers that pedestrians (bicycles, strollers, skate boarders, etc, use these roads also. actually dangerous! NOT safe. Desperately need sidewalks and bike paths for safety no sidewalks, accessability for the disabled, no bike path. Dangerous! Pahoa town needs sidewalks. Pedestrians must walk on the roadside which is dangerous with the flow of vehicular traffic on a narrow road. Pahoa is not physically accessible to individuals with mobility or visual disabilities. Hwy 130 needs bike paths for bicycles and scooters and traffic lanes should be widened. The highway is dangerous for all who use the highway. some of the most dangerous in the world. try walking from the natch to 7 -11 at night! The entire town is a pedestrian hazard. Is very dangerous to walk through many parts of Pahoa You have got to be kidding ! What pathways? Kids walking on Kahakai take their lives in their hands if they walk to school! ! It is dangerous to walk along the streets as traffic is heavy and speeding. A lot of the homes let their dogs loose so it is not safe to take a walk in the neighborhood. None until you kill child trying to get off bus in unmarked sidewalk Very bad situation. Dangerous to ride a bike with not even a shoulder. No sidewalks. I like the old boardwalks but they are not acessable to handicaped. I've felt at risk walking or biking down the main pahoa road especially at night with no street lights. Hardly any! This is very necessary! If you do not know, take a committee and stand in two areas within town. One by the Post Office(and look towards L &L and the 7 -11 store); the other by the two banks in town.. It is harrowing to watch people clamber about, walk onto the street while cars drive by and such. Having lived near the business district and having children walk to school I have only heard of the numerous occassions where they had close calls between the building that ended just past the tattoo shop and Paul's. As for bicycle they are vehicles and need to obey all traffic rules and should be walked on sidewalks. Sidewalks are not bicycle paths and they do not have the right of way! Also pedestrian crossing should be well marked. Too bad the police don't spend as much time at the crosswalks as they do waiting to write seatbelt tickets. Delete the current street parking & make downtown safe and welcoming. Need a good sidewalk & bike lane from high school to Longs. For me this is critical. Motorists need to be aware that they are 2nd class citizens and that pedestrians and bicycles have the right -of -way. As we migrate towards a world without oil, we need to refocus ourselves on people, not machines. Currently, motorists don't even think about bicyclists or pedestrians. more bikeways more people will be riding in future, electic slow vehicles also there are the strips along 130 for bikes, but I am enamored with the idea of old Pahoa town being peds only Any chance of improving Japanese Camp Rd as parallel route to walk and bike part of the way through Pahoa? and of extending it NW beyond P.O. Rd towards the Kahakai Mauka segment? It would need to be marked for walking, biking, and residents' use only. there are none. We need bike and walking paths that could connect the different subdivisions together through the beautiful forest. These would not only provide scenic routes into town that interconnect the different subdivisions they would also promote healthy life styles and reduce traffic and fuel cost. These trails should be away from the highways where vehicles travel and could easily be lighted by solar trail lights. Add the blinking lights to make cars stop for pedestrians. The center of Pahoa should be pedestrial only on weekends. Poor lighting at night, we need more reflective tape on the roads and poles. Bus Stops Bicycle path. In town is simply awful. It is VERY short - sighted for an outdoor climate/ tourist destination such as Hawaii claims to be, to NOT have top notch bicycle and walking pathways ALL OVER THE ISLAND, is another major safety issue, and impacts the economic status greatly as well. Look for the studies that have quantified the economic impact of bike /walk paths for towns all over the mainland, and such paths are clearly shown to pay well for the investment. previous comment on roadways modernize Would greatly improve the quality of Pahoa life!
