Need better bus stops /Shelters
Need better bus stops.
NEEDS SHELTER BUS STOP AND SAFE ZONING
More covered bus stops!
Bus shelter in town.
Good to at least have some public (Hele -On) bus service. Need proper bus stops, including rain
shelter. School bus - no opinion.
there should be more bus stops for people who really need to catch the hele -on everyday...
because i dont really see any bus stops...
extremely poor, need covered bus stops and safe pull off the road area for bus, not on the side
of the road blocking flow of traffic and endangering off bound riders.
Needs more improvement and proper bus stops with covered sitting areas as in Honolulu.
Need overhead shelters for waiting passengers.
Covered bus stops needed.
Public Transportation Page 1
Would be good to have signs so that people know where the designated bus stops are.
Need bus shelters, more local shuttles for Puna Makai
very few bus shelters, good pick -up locations (eg, with toilets, shelter, bike locking) not
developed. "Third -world countries have much better MT systems than we do" -- you can hear
people say this at any local meeting where Hele -on is brought up.
would be nice if there was a nicer covered bus stop where you could wait and the bus didn't
block traffic
Better than nothing, which is what we used to have. Need designates bus stops with cover and
benches, lighting and bus stop zone marked for motorists and pedestrians
needs clearly defined bustops, with rainshelter.
no covered area for people waiting for the bus, thank God for 7 -11 wall area, does the bus go to
the hospital?
Pullouts for the bus would ease congestion in town when the buses stop.
At least there is a bus now. I don't know what poor people without vehicles or with suspended
licenses did to get into Hilo before for social services appointments or court appearances. From
what I understand there is no bus on Sundays ? ?? I think the hours of operation, amount of
bustops, covered bustops, could use improvement for sure.
Bus routes seem to be suffient and there are a lot of people who use. There should be bu stops
with covreage for clear mark where the bus stop is and protection from rain
What do you think of the Bus schedules?
Not enough to accommodate flex schedules
Bus transportation within Pahoa itself - with express buses to Hilo - some buses just Pahoa!
bus does not come frequently enough
need express bus from Puna Coastal /Pahoa right to the University /College,
Public Transportation Page 2
More frequent Kalapana buses, please.
Need more buses to Hawaiian acres, not going to or from Kalapana.
Need bus to go to both Airports directly = Hilo & Kona
Needs to be available in all residential areas
Maybe more stops.
in Pahoa good in subdivisions not so, especially hpp
hele on from pahoa town to and from Hawaiian Beach's /Kahakai Blvd
need buses to go within each subdivision, each one feeding into a bus line that goes all along
Hwy 130. Then rides would be of reasonable length of time.
Need busses to run more frequently on major routes. Alternative energy busses and small
busses /vans desirable. Need more bus shelters.
Not enough routes and service
Need more buses going to Pohoiki / Opihikao / Kalapana
More buses in Leilani Estates and ? ?. Also in Pahoa Town. Lower gas prices.
Kea'au Hub system needs to be inupbucanted (cannot read handwriting... my best guess ?)
Although I have never used the Hele On Bus, I have heard people wanting more scheduled
times. The limited times makes it difficult for people to get to appointments or get home before
groceries get warm or cold.
Bus services on weekends, including sundays, more frequent
Feeder busses from subdvs,Sunday & expanded Saturday Svc,place for bus to pull off entrance
Hwn Shores, Bchs,Covered bus shelter center of town, more busses Kapoho area
Hele -on service between Kea'au and Pahoa, and between Pahoa and makai destinations needs
more busses. Kea'au needs to be developed as a hub for public busses, with more frequent runs
to Pahoa.
we need the bus to run more often!
The frequency of the Hele On is a joke. It sometimes feel that I see more people hitch hiking
than riding the bus because of the lack of frequency. Also, School Bus routes are only able to
Public Transportation Page 3
service main streets in sub divisions. This makes it difficult and dangerous, especially for our
elementary students, to walk from the drop off points to there homes, especially when the
distance is a mile or more.
Nobody knows when they come.
bus routes should be more clear, time - tables more present, more runs of which some faster,
service should cover airports and entire island
Adjust working hours with gov't. agency offices (including schools) and HeleOn bus schedules so
workers can take advantage of public transportation.
need more that come through the hour
Hele On or other form that is more frequent & within all subdivisions
frequency and radius should be better
Affordable and comes often.
slow infrequent, no buses to airport
want more frequent bus service on Puna coast with covered bus stops
It is great that the bus comes to Pahoa several times a day however with all the stops it makes
(like going ALL the way down Kahakai and taking several side roads in Hawaiian Shores) it takes
so long to reach Hilo or get back home that I try to avoid using the bus. Also this makes it
completely unsuitable for workers commuting to Hilo to work and is probably why the park and
ride lot by Makuu is rarely used. The bus needs an Express run during commute hours and IT
SHOULD GO TO THE HILO AIRPORT.
Pahoa needs more Hele On services with shuttles down to Pohoiki for the school kids after
school so they can go surfing. There needs to be more frequent buses here with a main station
in Pahoa that serves outlying areas (Ainaloa, H.P.P., Hawaiian Beaches, Red Road) in and out of
Pahoa Town.
direct routes from Kapoho, Pohiki to Pahoa would be good
need feeder buses from subdivisions so it doesn't take so long from Nanawale for instance into
Hilo
like to see shuttle service for Hele On in Leilani Estates - those who are seniors - no car
Public Transportation Page 4
Bus and other transportation should be planned for the outlying estates to connect to Pahoa
and beyond, and keeping with Hawaiian tradition of harmony and natural beauty of Puna as
growth is planned. We do not to become another Honolulu that is all paved over.
If there were some "express" buses with some park and ride and express rides to major
destinations, like from Pahoa to Hilo, more people would use the bus. Also there should be
several express buses from Pahoa and Hilo that go straight to Kona so that more workers could
use that form of transportation.
No transportation to social services, senior center, Unemployment in Hilo, no transport to
airport
Love the Hele On buses & schedule
need mini -buses into subdivisions to streamline Hele On route, add more trips
Better than it was -more routes, more frequent . Us FeclX style GPS tracking & dispatch.
can always be improved
Need local only busses
( "Hele On Bus" is circled -mdb) never on time
Severley lacking. Poor route schedules, lack of connecting routes,
Better than before, but too infrequent. Esp weekends/ holidays.
Need more busses and on the weekends for the kids
We need more buses. Three times a day isn't enough.
hele on is okay. Need substations in Keaau, Pahoa, and feeder buses or vans to get outlying
areas to bus stations.
The bus should stop at HAAS Charter School at least before and after school.
It would be nice if the bus provided service more often
This is a tough one ... Right in town, it seems like there could be more options for public
trans ... but then again, if the public trans isn't going to venture down to Kalapana, Pohiki, Keaau,
etc then it doesn't do much good. Seems like the Hele On schedule from Puna to Hilo isn't too
badthough
Limited services. Current services require monies, most people are lacking funds
Public Transportation Page 5
more frequent Hele On Bus is needed, with more routes as well.
HELE ON is ok, but the infrequency makes it impracticle for regular use for work or school
The Hele On Bus needs to be more frequent.
Expanded bus schedule with more trips per day from Pahoa to Hilo.
need more convenient schedule
Would use a much more frequent and regular service
Need bus shelters, more local shuttles for Puna Makai
Hele on Bus comes through very often.
Bus works fine, but bus schedule could be better with a little planning.
Needs more routes and express buses to reduce the time in bus
I jusrt wish I could leaern their schedule as I have yet made a bus
there should be more and should run smoother and there should be buses running moreoften
The frequency of the Hele On is a joke. It sometimes feel that I see more people hitch hiking
than riding the bus because of the lack of frequency. Also, School Bus routes are only able to
service main streets in sub divisions. This makes it difficult and dangerous, especially for our
elementary students, to walk from the drop off points to there homes, especially when the
distance is a mile or more.

While it has gotten better, bus is often late & doesn't serve all areas outside of Pahoa very well.
Look at the Hwn Beaches schedule. You cannot get to Pahoa until after 2pm unless you want to
cross the dangerous highway
Hele On better than before, but routes need to be imprved.
Ilive in Black Sand Beach Community. I would love to take the bus from Pahoa to home, but it
takes FOREVER -Need shuttles.
Public Transportation Page 6
HELE ON is ok, but the infrequency makes it impracticle for regular use for work or school. Also,
only folks who can walk up to 5 miles each way from inside the subdivisions, can make use of it
at all.
Bus being on time would be great. Also, a designated stop at the top of Kahaki Blvd would be
helpful for passengers who board in Pahoa and want to skip the long ride through Hawaiian
Beaches.
Need busses to run more frequently on major routes. Alternative energy busses and small
busses /vans desirable. Need more bus shelters.
The bus takes about 3 hours to get from Seaview to Hilo and it runs twice a day
A dangerous challenge to get to Pahoa from Hawaiian Beaches when taking the Hilo -bound bus!
You have to cross the 4 -lane highway, trek up to the stop on the Pahoa road across the Long's
block. This is not acceptable, especially during rush hour, for children, elderly and disabled. In
addition, just last night I stood in the pouring rain 20 minutes on the highway to catch the bus
home to Hawaiian Beaches, only to have the late driver fly past me, though I was waving my
arms for him to stop. After hitchhiking into town (in a vehicle I did not realize had open
containers until we were moving), I waited two hours, cold and wet for the bus that finally took
me home. I witnessed the same scenario recently when a young woman was waiting at the
covered bus stop, and the driver just flew past her. This has got to stop. Otherwise, I find many
What do you think of the Public Transportation?
It's not as good as some places, but much better than many.
Thankfully they have accommodated the people without vehicles and cut down on traffic and
gas issues, like the bikes on buses
The public transportation is great.
It is cheap, that's good, but it is way to cold but it's way too cold I've always heard the cold is a
form of population control, it sucks, and it doesnt go late enough to Kalapana.
great SVC & $1.00 is a deal for Big Island Transportation
the bus is great
Public Transportation Page 7
As a regular Hele On rider I am very happy with the service but would appreciate more pick -ups
out in developments
This is critical - we must make public transportation viable for people who otherwise would not
consider it. It must be convenient, affordable, and most importantly, RELIABLE
Pahoa is lucky to have so many buses to Hilo and also at no charge to many.
Don't use or need it, but agree there is a need.
I think our public transportations are good as of now
Hele on Buses are a little small and the arrival times are kind of late?
WE ONLY HAVE 1 BUS!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hele on bus system is poor and are very limited
Need WAY more Hele On bus transportation added.
We would prefer for the bus to be free.
More pubic transportation that is affordable needs to be in place. Many of our families struggle
financially.
Bus not free
Hele On is a good service. Especially when you bring your bike, since you can ride the bus up
from Seaview and coast back down on your bike. Grey Beard style!
I would love to see diesel buses on vegetable oil that is gotten from the waste of local
restaurants - that would be my dream
love Hele -On!
Public is not bad at all.
Bus service is improving, but we still need more routes, how about vans to bring more folks up
to the bus stops. Save gas and folks on the bus time.
There could be more Hele On Busses with more bike racks.
more small electric buses connecting to subdivisions, and a continuous shuttle for Pahoa town
I have not used Hele On. Appears to be very reliable and a needed service.
Public Transportation Page 8
it's great that it's free, but i think with a nominal fare, they could afford to expand the service.
Go from free to .75 or $1.00, not from free to 3 or 4 dollars which Puna folks cannot afford.
People on DHS could ride free by showing their EBT cards.
Hele on rules! This is an amazing service to the community.
Better when Free!
SOMETIMES YOU JUST DON'T HAVE A $1 AND THEY (BUSES) ARE COLD IN THE RAIN, AND LATE.
The limited and lengthy rides are discouraging and should be covered by tax money.
Hele -On drivers to be skilled, pleasant, and helpful... KUDOS to them!
What do you think of the quality of public transportation personnel?
It would be nice if the drivers were nicer
need laws and rules for handicap /disabled patron use; need drivers who don't damage elderly
and disabled passengers
drivers do not stop for passengers at bus stops in and around Pahoa town, and decide to cancel
routes at whim (to Pahoa, originating in Hilo); both behaviors cause potential riders to hitchhike
or wait for HOURS for a bus.
I do not use the bus very often and when I did I found it alright and everyone has to admitt the
price was right. Some of the drivers in the past were something to be desired. They managed to
stop and pick up or drop off certain people and others were not offered the same service
What do you think about the School Buses?
School bus ok Hele on need more services
Public Transportation Page 9
School buses usually run almost empty. I see buses leave school with 4 or less students on the
bus. I also see kids standing up and walking around while the bus is moving. I also see kids
throw out trash from the windows of the bus. The buses do not let working people get around
them. They should stop every 4 streets and let cars around. Most likely the cars behind buses
are tax payers that are trying to get to work or get home. The Hele On is a great service and I
know a lot of people use this service. I would like to see better service if there is a demand for
it. With the price of gas and expense of a car I would like to see more people use the bus. I
would like to see more pick up and drop off spots. I would like to see a parking lot for people to
leave their cars when they use the bus. I would like to see better transportation to the
University and more places in Hilo.
I drive a school bus and the actions of passenger car operators in respect to the safety of our
students is deplorable. I would like to see separate areas for school bus and passenger vehicles
especially at the elementery school where passenger vehicles make it extremely hazardous for
the buses to manuever by filling the entrance to the elementery school and the Keohe
Homstead Road from Pahoa Village Road to the school.
School buses should not be allowed access to that road in the middle of town unless
improvements are made. Additionally, it's time for some lights and more visible crosswalks in
town. As for the Hele On Bus, the scheduling into Hilo needs to be adjusted better - including
additional service buses into Hilo downtown for folks that start work around 10AM.
Miscellaneous
Remove the need to travel more than 5 miles to obtain necessities /services.
more bike lanes & walking side walks threw Pahoa Town
Government folk always wants
No more
dont know
Don't use.
