What do you think of the Internet services in the area?
Internet and phone service is too sporadic and when it is available it is very slow, possibly due
to not enough bandwidth in the area
. Internet? Don't make me laugh! I've been trying to get a provider into Nanawale since I've
been here. The only one available has their satellites too low and my antenna see nothing but
the ohia.
cell service, internet poor
Need more internet access
BETTER /MORE INTERNET IN SUBDIVISIONS.
ELECTRICITY IS TOO EXPENSIVE AND MORE WIRELESS INTERNET PLEASE AND CELL RECEPTION.
Need Broad band internet in areas like Nanawale
internet- hard to get & expensive
MORE HIGH SPEED INTERNET OPTIONS WOULD BE GOOD
internet service is poor too;
get internet to everybody
need (underlined need) high speed internet
Public Utilities Page 1
Wi -fi for everyone, high speed internet.
We are getting billed for "high speed" internet while only being able to receive medium to low
speed services. Hawaiian Tel says that even though they have added more lines instead of
making service better for existing customers they are adding new customers who join the group
for mediocre services.
No high speed internet in most of Leilani Estates where I live.
need more internet cafes or other - often can't get online because so many people are using in
the places that provide.
Could use more options for internet.
(MG 5/10 NCA) Intenet usaage /availability for seniors is limited
(MG 5/10 NCA) Need internet services for locations that cable co. can not accomodate them.
(Broadband does not work!)
Need more Inernet Ports!!! Especially down in Kapoho!!
Most of lower Puna has only what was considered "high speed" internet if it was still 1999
Internet service is very poor in many areas
It is impossible to receve internet survice except by using a inhome wireless connection.
internet services lacking and or slow. very little water service
Poor internet though
The availability of electricity, phone an internet is great here.
Aloha Broadband is now available although it is not always fast and is expensive.
Free wi -fi for the whole town would be fantastic. Better lighting for safety
would like a better internet service. Pahoa's infrastructure could be a much stronger hub for
the surrounding communities.
internet services are sketchy in areas
I can't get fast internet = very limiting for work & interests
NO INTERNET
Public Utilities Page 2
DSL is from Hunger (meaning NG NOT GOOD, paid for dsl with dial up speed), water N /O, Phone
service fair, ALOHA BROADBAND seems to be doing a decent job.
You could have informational internet kiosks & hot spots —
Black sands has no high speed internet
I am so glad to be asked this question. I strongly believe that internet access should be
commensurate with the population boom in the Puna area (esp. Fern Acres).
Internet is still not available in many pahoa areas.
all public utilities needs updating, particularly internet access.
Internet access is really limited.
Given how small the central business district is, it should be relatively inexpensive to provide
free wi -fi for people.
I think the library should have free internet.
better Internet
We have high speed wireless internet, though expansion of that service to more communities
could be improved upon.
many areas do not have high speed internet access
Water great for HI'n Beaches. We are so grateful for that service. Electric rates are a disgrace,
considering the potential for alternative sources. Phone and internet are shaky and often
unreliable
yeah, the Internet infrastructure could be vastly improved
equality in internet for better economic success
Pahoa could use a wifi district in downtown for individuals and businesses.
We also get upset with the internet srvice, through the cable company. Our cable goes down
more than twice a month and then we not only don't have internet service, for our business,
but no phone service, in case of emergencies. We have never experienced as many outageous
as Time Warner cable has.
Electric, phone and internet are great where we live in Leilani, but some areas need better
internet access
Public Utilities Page 3
, hawaii telcoms internet isn't readily available
We pay full price for Hawaiiantel's DSL service, however, service is much slower than in metro
areas and drops the line regularly.
Hawaiian Beaches is good, except for internet...
internet and cell phone reception has a few dead areas
Most of Puna lacks high speed wired (HawaiianTel & Oceanic /Time Warner). We live and work
in a wired world. We need to attact high tech with global jobs. We cannot achieve this without
the technology in place.
All of Pahoa being an internet hot spot would be interesting - -not sure what other towns /areas
who have done that have experienced. And I don't know the costs or who would pay for it.
Internet and cell phone service terrible
internet, cellular telephone, municipal water, and electricity coverage are spotty in the area.
Broadband needs to be taken to everyone - and the franchise agreements that are already in
place need to be enforced, ASAP.
What do you think of the availability of water?
public water fountations in town!
Water should be unfloridated
NON WATER AREA (OPTIONS)
Keep water minimally treated.... no fluoride
I think every subdivision should have a water station inside
Catchment works
appreciate available public water in Nanawale
Catchment for most of us residents outside of Pahoa
Public Utilities Page 4
Non - catchment water would be great
. I happen to live in a area that is not served by the water company. That being the case I am
on Catchment and it is just fine with me. I had to add the UV filter system and I maintain the
gutters and tank to keep the water as good as possible. I also added another filter to my filter
system and the water is just fine. Also had the water tested and my rain water is a little better
than the County water for the acid.
dont know about water never had any county water
Water is good
Very limited county water except in Pahoa Town; and very difficult to get new internet service
because the ports are all filled.
All streets in area should have water, sewers
Much of Pahoa is still on water catchment, but I think the specific area indicated on the map is
covered.
Need county water to all subdivisions,
I like the fact that we are collecting our own water and producing our own electricity.
public water is unavailable in many areas,
Water great for HI'n Beaches. We are so grateful for that service
It is good that the county provides water spigots for people to fill their own containers. Many
people have catchment, which is nonpotable water source.
With so many people living in Puna, why can't we have County water?
There is no water service to the subdivisions, having to rely on catchment.
really don't want to deal with a water utility. I love using catchment.
Please do not fluoridate the water. (i don't know if it is or not. That should be public
knowledge. Tell us what's in the town water please)
Water is excellent
internet, cellular telephone, municipal water, and electricity coverage are spotty in the area.
Our municipal water is excellent quality, distribution is very limited
Public Utilities Page 5
What do you think of the communication services?
, geothermal tecniques dangerous, phone service spotty (t- mobile), internet good
cell service, internet poor
Another cell tower
Cell Phones are Limited
It would be nice to have a pay phone
need cell tower.
phone towers Receptin is Terrible
att only cell provider down much of Red Road the past 10 years.
phones too expensive along with internet
Cellular access needs improvement
Much of 130 and virtually all of 137 has NO cell coverage.
The cellphone reception is very good and the high speed internet is great.
Much of Puna such as Seaview has no cell phone service which is inconvenient
cell service in areas unable to receive service to call out
lacking cell towers
With more cell towers that are disguised to blend in with the surroundings.
I can't even get one bar on my cell phone. yikes!
A pay phone? Not everyone has cell phones or internet
Phone service is also iffy in certain areas
No cell service in Leilani
internet and cell phone reception has a few dead areas
Public Utilities Page 6
internet, cellular telephone, municipal water, and electricity coverage are spotty in the area.
Internet and cell phone service terrible
Phone, doesn't seem like an issue, since public phones have gone the way of the buggy whip.
I would like Helco to service Seaview with internet service
What do you think of Helco and its services?
too costly
There should be free power stations at every park. Solar /wind /wave. People can come and
just plug in.
MMI :k]l0 Ira RV11iI9lW:/ »►MkyjIF1►1Di MINI MIilk]M IILI1III :I►102»A_[ VIA01DZ4MIIIL 1il1i1[97►1
out of sight expensive- why not use wind
* worried that GEO- therma will not lower our Helco BILLS *
Horrible elect. costs - highest in country USA need phone tower for cell phones so in emergency
there is contact
I do not live in the survey area but where I do live the electric and the telephone are just fine
monopoly on helco,
We're off grid because Helco has not seen fit to install poles in our area. Rural electrification
was the 1930's on the mainland. Still catching up, I guess.
Water and electricity is good but could be cut down a little.
HELCO problem... power goes off much too often, and Time Warner ... cable goes out with no
explanation. Of course, nobody gets credit on their monthly bills when there are
outages ... even for hours at a time.
The availability of electricity, phone an internet is great here Water is not available in a lot of
places. There are a lot of people getting water at the water station which is kind of primitive.
The price of electricity is excessive. Compared to other places in the USA it is 4 times higher
Public Utilities Page 7
than most places. Something needs to be done about the expense of electricity here. The cost
makes it almost not worth working when you can go on public assistance.
Electricity costs are ridiculously high and that is why people of Puna are going self- sufficient and
off -grid every day. SOMETHING MUST BE DONE ABOUT HELCO AS THEY NOW CAN CHARGE
WHATEVER THEY WANT AND IT IS VERY UNAFFORDABLE. They propose more alternative
energy (such as more geothermal) yet do not meet with the people and do not ever propose to
REDUCE RATES as a result.
with electric rates so high, and us living so close to geothermal couldn't we do better,
electricity costs highest in the nation.
Planning for public utilities should be expanded into the estates areas. Utilities should be
underground whenever possible. Internet service should be made available in town and at hubs
in the estates for ease of accessibility until residents start building in the estates. Water should
be made accessible in the estates with tanks in the estates leading to houses as they are being
built at reasonable cost. Other viable forms of power generation should implemented at
reasonable costs to the citizens of Puna - Pahoa present and future.
HELCO is outrageous -with geothermal Pahoa & Puna deserves lowest rates.
underground those UGLY lines
Over priced
There needs to be community involvement with the utility companies to put $ back into their
services in the way of upgrades and new technology instead of all going to profits.
electricity could be improved in old buildings
electricity is very expensive considering Hawaii's high use os renewables,
Electric rates are a disgrace, considering the potential for alternative sources. Phone and
internet are shaky and often unreliable
IN Pahoa I am sure it is all fine... Surrounding subdivisions and communities it is fair at
best .... Seems that for such a small island there would be electricity ran EVERYWHERE and
phone and internet ... and what is up with the cell service? People in far away lands and foreign
third world countries have better cell service than here....
Frequent outages for the phone, cable, and electricity.
Outrageous prices
Public Utilities Page 8
the world's most expensive!
The electiricity rates, of course are outrageous! We are all being taken advantage of, by the
Helco Co. They know that most of us NEED their power to be able to pump our water, thus
being most of our real necessity, even over water, because most folks out here have catchment,
for our water source. This we are happy with. We like being in control of our water. We have
lived in Hawaii for 11 years now and fomr where we come from, the cable service gives refunds,
for outageous lasting longer than 1 hour. Time Warner would be out of bussiness, if this was
the case for them. Better cell service, may be an answer for this problem.
PGA is loud and we need compensation for pov such as a break in our electric, maybe for us
who have lived here 3 or more years.
Needs massive overhaul! Start by replacing the tangled electric grid in Pahoa Town, co-
ordinate with State for phone /internet.
power is expensive
Super
Need long range planning
Overhead utilities are quite unsitely.
Power lines need upgraded
Are you kidding ?. Helco goes off -line a whole lot less than they used to. The redundant electric
lines for Geothermal on Hwy b/w Keaau and Pahoa are so ugly.
If you're only talking about Pahoa, this is fine. Everywhere else in Puna it is very poor.
What would you like to see happen with Utilities in general?
need more solar
Make Pahoa a model for sustainable solar energy.
Need more solar not geothermal
Public Utilities Page 9
Geothermal will cost millions of dollars while creating hazardous waste. It makes more sense to
use that same money to supply solar panels to residence as well as using wind and wave energy
to supply energy while reducing our use of fossil fuel and high electric costs. Sometimes it's
more important to take care of the people in our community than to make shareholders richer
who are not.
Stricter regulations please... geothermal plant is the worst, breaking all permit conditions... at
best other utility compliance with rules and regs is poor to middling. PUC is rubber stamp for
Helco
More solar, more catchment (be careful about too much "county" water. Better to use the
water from the sky than from the finite aquifer! Yes, better internet access everywhere!
Need to develop alternative sources of electricity to preserve the environment and help Pahoa
monetarily.
WHY are we not using more solar power and rainwater ??
more dsl ports, free places to use computers within pahoa, more solar options. Kudo's for solar
at police station
need sewage, wastewater improvements
Would like to see solar systems on all community buildings, including solar water heaters. Free
high -speed internet service throughout village.
Need more cyber cafes with live music public water and bathroom access. Pay phones etc.
, high speed internet connections, county water
To live only 2 miles out of town and be totally without utilities is crazy. Requires substantial
investment to develop property. Cell coverage in many areas is poor as well.
poor at best. What water? what internet?
alot of pahoa has no sevices and the surrounding areas.
Electric, phone and internet are great where we live in Leilani, but some areas need better
internet access
Look Need more access for low- income needy family's.
like a third world utility system in an old Mexican city.
shameful; third -world countries have better infrastructure
Public Utilities Page 10
There are still areas like Kalapana where radio and wifi is still unavailable, electricity is too high
priced.
Could be a little more accessible.
Third world countires have better service than Puna!
Horrible
The public utilities are good.
Reduce prices, show public how to reduce usage.
I'm privileged to live with full on -grid utilities, and aside from too -high costs, are reliable.
Miscellaneous
HELLO, BATHROOMSM Children and adults are urinating and defecating on the streets because
the bathroom is too far or closed.
Community Center needs Soap in the bathrooms Drinking fountains Are great — FREE THE
INTERNET! More electric outlets
The most on Island
internet especially
Only district with them. !!!! Yeah we the most important.
Need more lights on Pahoa /Puna roads
OF COURSE EVERY CITY NEEDS THIS
In my place (Hawaiian beaches) our cellphone signal is not good.
I do not live directly in Pahoa, so cannot comment
do not excessive street lighting
(entered on MDB computer by nephew)
I live off grid
Public Utilities Page 11
we need more help with our ?) solar water and size those systems many of us are not on HELCO
AND DO NOT WANT TO BE - we need help putting in good solar systems
Within the bubble it is pretty darn good, outside - meh.
. I like the fact that we are collecting our own water and producing our own electricity.
off grid
So far okay.
