More people would visit the businesses, along with better parking, either street or more parking lots that were easily accessible. Keaau - Pahoa Hwy Need a 4 lane Highway between Keaau & Pahao. * need roundabouts at orchidland & Longs Drug Need to be 4 lane from Kea'au to at least Ainaloa or Maku'u Dangerous intersections, no emergency routes. Need exit other than Hwy to Hilo if volcano covers Leilani to hwy area need at least one more route in and out in case of emergency MG 5/10 NCA) Need alternate route.Hwy congested during morning rush and evening. This should be done in conjunction to infrastructure of the "New" Pahoa need street lights and two lanes each direction I have been on the BI for over 30 years and STILL, only one road in and out of Pahoa ... sad but we need 2 -3 lanes in BOTH directions to serve this area and the commuters properly and safely. Bottom line is that the highways leading into & out of Pahoa need to be double lane. With the Roads in and out of Pahoa Page 2 population growth their is always traffic which makes the commute into & out of Hilo painful. Yikes! Another more mauka route is NEEDED! The Keaau / Pahoa Road, Route 130, needs to be expanded to 4 lanes. The traffic congestion during morning and afternoon commute is terrible, particularly at the bottleneck leading into HHP from Keaau. This has been cause for many accidents and driver rage. This problem must be looked at and viable options must be implemented as the Puna District is the fastest growing distriict in all of the county and vehicle congestion will only get progressively worse. Post Office road Post office road is marginally adequate, the intersection of the 130 and 132 is good, but the one at the Pahoa business center end of town sucks massively. Who approved that church on the 132? Were they sniffing glue? The stop light by the high school is very dangerous. It needs to be re -timed so that the traffic does not get so backed up. The HAAS charter school road is very dangerous too. Cars passing other cars and sudden stops. widened road to Post Office Main Street MUCH improved. The street that goes from HAAS to the P.O. is a disaster; the lack of a crossing on 130 for students there needs to be addressed. Malama / Kahakai Intersections Post office road is marginally adequate, the intersection of the 130 and 132 is good, but the one at the Pahoa business center end of town sucks massively. Needs immediate attention in the form of a roundabout and new engineering They are improved but north end of town will get worse as more people move to Puna It needs major improvement especially by the Malama market entrance. Too many accidents to count. By -pass with access to town center and shopping mall is better than before. but (underlined but) intersection needs re- design. Dangerous and difficult to navigate. We need a traffic oval from the entrance to the Malama / longs road to Kahakai, where only right turns are allowed. Done right (not something Hawaii is good at...) traffic would flow easily and no one would be making left turns in front of others. Talk about a sobriety test. Even sober most people are challenged getting in and out of Malama Market. Why didn't the entry simply come straight in from Hilo instead of looping back and around making it highly conjested. the new intersection at 130 and Pahoa Vill rd, the entrances /exits near Long's, the intersection with Kahakai - this entire area is an incredible awful dangerous mess. worst planned streets ever! the entrance at the other end of town (kapoho rd) is fine. Northern entry is poorly designed. Needs some realignment to make it safer. You killer cornoe A veritable nightmare. Hwy.130 into Malama Marketplace is russian roulette on wheels. Without Red Lights Daily crashes will continue (Malama) Dangerous intersection near Longs /Malama / Kahakai horribly dangerous intersectionM! I think it would help if we had a stop light by Malmama's intersection because thats where the Roads in and out of Pahoa Page 5 accidents happen & it isn't safe there the roads is just plain out crap the engineers do not even plan out the road plans correctly they should have put street lights to eliminate the numbers in car accidents and open up the road by aloha gas station to the main highway and make it a one way going straight into pahoa village to relieve the traffic coming into pahoa. Also they should have make a four way intersection with kaikai blvd The roads are excellent but should add stop lights especially malama area to avoid accidents The stop light by the high school is very dangerous. The Malama Marketplace, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and Burger King roads are the most dangerous streets I have ever seen in my life. They are not marked well, The curves and the turns are confusing to people who are not aware of the roads around there. There needs to be a stop light at that intersection. The roads need to be widened and painted to mark the lanes. The most dangerous thing is when cars cross from Kentucky Fried Chicken to Hawaiian Beaches and cross over the double line. Driving in Pahoa is very dangerous. the intersection by longs and malama shopping center and past that to Kahakai is horrible. It's unsafe, confusing, poor plannin! Malama intersection needs realignment. bviously we need a light @ the main entrance to town i.e. malama strip mall area Malama mart exit from 130 needs control. I could not believe there was not a stop light put at Kahakai when the new shopping area went in. So many traffic problems are there. the intersection coming into Pahoa by Malama Market is an accident waiting to happen. white poles are a distraction and the merge lain from Beaches onto the highway is scary. I also entrance into the newest development (fast food village and Longs) from the highway in both directions - being able to turn left off the highway into the development if you are coming from the Nanawale side of town. The entrance into Pahoa from Hilo is dangerous and needs to be re- designed soonist. Roads in and out of Pahoa Page 6 State needs to improve Hwy 130 / Pahoa Village Rd intersection near Longs NOW, not 10 years from now. The intersection into town from Malama market is a DISASTER!! And the turn into Longs, what idiot designed that? Its nice to have, but it is such a nightmare trying to get in there. intersection of death at Keaau end of bypass Malama Corner is deadly! Long's Turn Deadly - we need TRAFFIC LIGHTS! SAVE LIVES PLEASE Very dangerous entrance at Malama Mart end! Intersection at Kapoho /Kalapana end of town with light is OK. Intersections at Hilo end of town are a mess. The Longs mall area has poorly designed ingress and egress but is reasonably safe. Turns on /off of highway are unsafe. Kahakai intersection is unsafe, forest of reflector sticks makes it more confusing. Ingress /egress to Malama Market mall from Pahoa main street is a complete joke. Multiple cases of inadequate turn lanes, unsafe sightlines. Embarrassment to the community. The entrance by the Malama Marketplace is very "tricky" to get into from the main highway. The traffic flow has to be thought out better. The old entrance that is now fenced off at Malama Marketplace should be reopened to ease traffic congestion and prevent accidents. We need a traffic lights at the intersection entering pahoa. Its a very dangerous intersection. Not happy about the dangerous intersection between malama market and longs The intersection around Kahakai and Malama Market is very poor. For drivers coming from Hilo, it would be helpful to let them veer off of 130 - where it is currently barricaded. Also, it is confusing for people turning left off of 130 (coming from Kalapana) to have the right -of -way instead of people turning right off of 130 (coming from Hilo). This would be alleviated if people could come straight onto Pahoa Village Road from 130 from the Hilo side (as mentioned in my first sentence). A roundabout or traffic light at Kahakai Road would help as well. Roads in and out of Pahoa Page 7 We need stop lights put in at the Hawaiian beaches and malama market intersections. intersections at Malama Market are poorly planned Malama area, Woodland Center, and proposed B. Kurohara will totally impact traffic. We all know that the intersection at the Highway and Turning toward Malama market is always a little sketchy.... Please hire a competent traffic engineer to work on all the intersections. The one by Pahoa High needs a right turn only lane heading makai across 130. There needs to be public restrooms, sidewalks for pedestrians, more stop lights for pedestrians to cross the main street. Would like to see focus on walking and bike riding instead of motor vehicles in heart of Pahoa Village. Wide bike /pedestrian lanes to allow easier drop off and pick up of hitchhikers and safer pedestrian /bike traffic. We need roundabouts! Bike lanes! Pedestrian lanes! General Comments and Suggestions safe speed limts and nice sidewalk Wider & lights GOOD, BUT BIG CHAIN BUSINESSES ARE MAKING ITTOO MUCH TRAFFIC FOR OUR SMALL TOWN. Appreciate recent road improvments Dangerous intersections, no emergency routes. Improve by enforcing speed limits Pahoa's interface with highway is terrible - other roads ok. dangerous There are some very scary intersections in Pahoa. Can't believe the congested traffic through town sometimes. Could use a light at Longs drug and a at post office road and highway Awful! I drive to Hilo for some shopping to avoid the roads in and out of Pahoa! Our road needs to be widened to accomodate the increase in population. Also think that stop lights to regulate traffic need to be implemented at key intersections where we see multiple accidents weekly. I think the roads need to be improved greatly! seem to be dangerous intersections Dangerous During rush hours, it can be rough if you are in a hurry :) we need more check points in some places when we do have really important days. and we need STOP signs more of them and we need a STOP light by longs drugs cause there are a lot of accidents there that occur often. The road to the transfer station from the high school is dangerously narrow for something used so much. Hiway 130 intersections are a disaster. Extremely dangerous intersections. We will outgrow the 130 improvements before they are even completed No more roads necessary traffic flow needs greater safety enhancement with roundabouts, lights or something. Too many ingress and egress is close proximity Anticipate with great eagerness the construction of roundabouts at Kahakai and at mm10 town entrance. Perhaps community will then also seek one at Kalapana /Kapoho Rd intersection to replace the signal. This should stop the almost daily collisions, which is the absolute worst aspect of roads in & out of Pahoa. Also bad is the lack of safe walking and biking space, and lack of local shuttles /local transportation. Good that the bypass is there to relieve Pahoa of non - local traffic, which does mean less traffic to threaten walkers /bikers. Roads in and out of Pahoa Page 12
