please recycles for cans + bottles everwhee
need to be able to recycle old Bateries more then once or twice a year
great new dumpster
Great new dump!
Hazardous waste pickup once a year is extremely inconvenient - Also no oil disposal
would be nice to have a E -waste drop off once in a while.
beautiful Pahoa dump! Lets try to get teams to clean the roads- the people paid to do it don't!
excellent new transfer station.
The dump is gorgeous
Keaau dump is a very good example need more like that very eficient
Only Pahao Rates a transfer station Kurtistown still waiting 40 years
more hazardous waste days, once a month would be better than twice a year, need a place to
recycle batteries
santitation in Pahoa town along curbs is desirable
Sanitation, waste disposal, environmental health Page 1
New transfer station is great!
good improvments!
love love love the Pahoa and Kea'au waste disposal sites
Making landfill bigger. Encourage recycling more. Incentives for recycling
Great new transfer station. Recycling is easy and fast
I'd put E if the dump were finished & the recycle reuse part was open
New rubbish dump is outstanding.
Pahoa Recycle and Dump much improved, especially with the Green Waste. I'd like more days
to recycle HI 5.
Hey with the new facility we have now there is no problem getting rid of our waste and all the
recycleable goods. That faculity is really a great improvement over what we had.
Free rubbish transfer station? What's not to like? The new facility is very good.
Dumps should be open ALL hours. Since they started being closed most of the time, people now
leave trash bags near the close dump, or just litter everywhere.
The new Pahoa transfer station is excellent
The new dump is nice. Pricey, but nice.
I like the new dump!
Would be nice to have city waste disposal.
Our dump is the gem of Pahoa
No trash pick -up unless one is willing to pay for it.
The transfer stations are excellent. The hours are great. The convenience of having a transfer
station which ever way you drive is great. The recycling programs are great. The trash hauling
services are affordable and connvenient. There is a huge problem in Pahoa area regarding the
dumping of pig wastes, cars, furniture, and other large items. They are just dumped on the side
of the road. There is also a mentality that it is ok to toss out lit cigarettes from cars, toss out
trash from fast food places, and cans and bottles tossed out on the side of the road. Many
people here are litter bugs. Most of the time the trash is either from fast food places or
convenience stores. Also there are a lot of cigarette packages and cigarette butts all over the
Sanitation, waste disposal, environmental health Page 2
place. There is usually wrappers from non nutricious foods such as soda, candy, chips. I have
picked up receipts that I have found along the roads and notice that the receipt has a FS total
which appears the trash was thrown out by a recipient of food stamps.
The new transfer station is great.
surprising that their is no municipal garbage, too much gas wasted dumping, also no trash bins
in central Pahoa, makes it easy to litter.
Pahoa has a nice new transfer station. The transfer stations used to be open every day and
now with closures people just leave trash anyway and it is an eyesore.
Very good transfer station.
Recycle Center great - now everyone needs to learn to recycle & not dump out of lazyness
Beautiful new waste /recycle center - would like to have mulch svc added to green waste
disposal
The new rubbish station layout is nice, but the road seems backwards. Most people want to
dump the rubbish first, then look at the re- store. However, with the road coming in the way it
does, we have to drive around again.
Could be worse. Need to end idea of "waste" and reduce, reuse everything.
There is no trash service, so people have to take their own trash to the dump. That's a
inconvenience if u don't own a truck or if u don't own a care at all! At least we have the option
to recycle now!
except for limiting the hours we can sue the transfer station - we should go back to 24 hr access
Really like the New Transfer station!! Special thanks to the Recycle group like the reuse center
We need to make this easier than it is if we are ever going to "really clean up the town."
New transfer station is Ono!
Appreciate more hours at Pahoa Dump.
I like the new recycling /reuse /redemption center.
We could use a reuse center next to transfer stn
New transfer station is a work of art, and is designed to make it easy for folks to do good
disposal and recycling. Bring on the E -waste and hazardous disposal, please!
Sanitation, waste disposal, environmental health Page 3
Awesome transfer station in Pahoa.
The PUNA area transfer stations get thumbs up and bright stars! Love the recycling/ reuse
program ... even though I can't believe that the mixed use is actually hauled and sorted by
people here .... I have NEVER met someone who told me they worked for sanitation as a mixed
use recyclables sorter... have you? Enviro health seems like it is ok...
like the new dump.
The transfer stations were better served when there were attendants.
WOULD LIKE GARBAGE PICK UP ON PUNA COAST
New Pahoa dump is much better, and it is encouraging to see more recycling occurring with
clear signage to foster this behavior.
Beautiful new transfer facility! Need to coordinate with abandoned vehicle towing and
appliance disposal.
I love our new transferstation. Nicely done. I can do all of my recycling /green waste/ rubbish in
one place.
We LOVE our new Pahoa Transfer Station!Thank you!
more open days for waste disposal
Thank -you to all who worked towards our new dump and re -cycle center
after spending so much money on the new dumpster, it is a little disappointing that no
furniture is recycled there.
nice transfer station
Great transfer station.
Instead of garbage collection - everyone is responsible for taking their own to a collection point.
This is why litter is such a problem.
To dump garden waste and know that it will be put to use somewhere else is very powerful.
Also appreciate the reclamation attempts at the collecting stations
The new Pahoa dump is fantastic!
The new Transfer Station is wonderful.
Sanitation, waste disposal, environmental health Page 4
The transfer Station is 2 miles from the High School and just over 1 mile from the Puna Baptist
Church and yet idiots still can't manage to get their rubbish to the facility but find it easier to
dump it along Cemetery Road!
Transfer station is Great! Town always appears clean.
Neighborhood recycle stations would encourage less waste. As well, more H15 recycle bins
along the street would be good. A model composting /permaculture garden could become the
site of ongoing composting workshops and other natural, sustainable ways of malama 'aina, as
well as community gardens and harvest celebrations. A plan for cleaning up illegal dumps and
junk cars should begin in Pahoa and radiate out to the rest of Puna. The village schools can
create place -based learning communities wherein the kids are actively involved in keeping the
village clean and green, perhaps even offering food for sale that they grow at the Sunday
market. Village residents can dream up incentives for taking part in village upkeep and
beautification, such as friendly competitions or treasure -hunt style cleanup days ... wherein
artists make art from trash and prizes are awarded.
Street cleaning should be more ongoing and regular. The new transfer station is very nice.
could really use help with curbside recycling and diversion of recyclables from landfill on a
convenient communitywide basis.
Leave the dump open longer hours, take e -waste to be recycled, otherwise people are just
throwing it in the trash when the guys aren't looking
The transfer station and recycling and greenwaste collection is excellent.
Should have municipal trash pickup, curbside recycling
There should be more recycleing places and when people bring in there cans they shouldnt get
ripped off.
Need recycle bins in town
No trash pick -up
Much of waste is food waste from restaurants; need local composting facility nearby - -can
produce marketable product from what is otherwise a costly problem, smelly, attracting rats.
San Francisco composts food & green waste as a city. Let's see Pahoa do that.
The new transfer station is grand. People need some easy ideas about sorting and recycling at
home, because many still do not do it. Especially those who have trash haulers come to their
Sanitation, waste disposal, environmental health Page 5
homes. They do not seem to make any accommodations or requirements for recycling.
Littering is an ongoing problem: lack of respect for this beautiful place.
Our streets have rubbish
Suggestion - Monthly town clean up day - give trash and garbage bags.
Public trash cans keep litter in check, air quality is generally very good, waste disposal (transfer
stations) accessible. Not too sure about the landfills they go to, though
Needd to stop people dumpiing on side of road
cutting trees and leaving in flood areas not practical, recycling has improved.
More effort should be made to hold those who leave trash on the side of our roads responsible.
Trash cans and cleanliness is lacking
The old town section does not inspire confidence. It should be cleaner
What do you think about the current state of Sanitation Systems?
i notice county help, bowlie, or cesspool
Pahoa /Puna needs a solution to reliance on cesspools.
Appropriate waste disposal is sorely lacking and could cause the town to be shut down.
provisions should be made in the code to allow either compost sanitation or other methods of
waste disposal until public waste treatment becomes available at reasonable cost.
no place for septics so many properties in violation.
We need city ceptic system like Honokaa implimented. ??
The town and the aina need sewers and treatment facilities
Big issue for restaurants and shops on Pahoa Main Street. No more place for septic tank.
Sanitation, waste disposal, environmental health Page 6
Cess pools for the growing population in this extremely porous "soil" would seem to be an issue
to study, especially near the tide pools, which are harboring dangerous bacteria, likely from just
such a source.
Install a sewer system.
The huge amount of cesspools around Pahoa town has to be a problem, though I'm not sure
how you would measure it.
too many cesspools polluting -- especially near shore waters off Kapoho
Are public sanitation needs being met in Pahoa?
Need more public restrooms
need public restrooms
Need public restrooms in Pahoa
Pahoa needs 3 public restroom stations accessible from the main corridor, from one end of
town to the other.
need more public restrooms
not enough public bathrooms
the public restrooms could be cleaner.
More public bathroomsHH! Clean and well stocked.
We need public bath & shower OPEN 24/7 Otherwise we are open to epidemics —
Need options of public restroom for visitors and islanders; this is a public health issue. //
We still lack in infastructure in these areas
Also, we can use waste water to irrigate community gardens & banana patches!
There absolutely should be a pubic restroom facility in Pahoa. To not have one is disgusting.
Very few restrooms available to the public.
Sanitation, waste disposal, environmental health Page 7
Need public restroom facility, more open park space in which to rest and regenerate
Only restroom is at the pool for public use.
PAHOA NEEDS PUBLIC RESTROOMSI I Walking up to the county center at night alone is not an
option for many even if they are open.
not too many options for shoppers - basically only restaurant patrons
What environmental health issues are you concerned about?
Under poor extremely sad in fact slug disease was not taken care of by the Health Dept. when
the people told them.
Sanitation is good but Environmental Health is not good no geothermal in residentail areas
no geothermal
what about radiation after fukushima?
Will always be poor in all of the above until geothermal is shut down. PGV is poisoning air,
water and soil. Look at respiratory diseases of Pahoa school children highest in U.S.A.
NEED cleaner utilities and such
We need solar power on the schools and major buildings.
I am very concerned about protecting water quality for swimming & coastal ecosystem health,
concerned about poor pesticide applications, overdevelopment movement of pest organisms
Need ordinances requiring citizens to keep up their spaces and allowing the county to do
something when the owners don't.
Concerned about Geothermal adding additional wells in such a populated area. Most
geothermal wells worldwide are not in residential areas on a fault line that could quake at
anytime. potential for a health emergency with inadequate plan to evacuate.
Vog is not healthy; what is the true impact of geothermal development to the human body?
Information is needed
Sanitation, waste disposal, environmental health Page 8
No herbicide spray on road sides please
Chemical spraying needs to stop, especially within residential and farm areas. A multipronged
innovative approach to invasive species needs to come from the entire community, and benefit
the local community (why does the military get to take all the unsold papayas and make
biofuel? that energy should stay in Puna.). Finally,
The huge amount of pesticides used outside of town is unfortunate, though so is the GMO
papaya, and who knows what other crops.
