I always run into people I know wherever I go 1 Much activity and available ways to find one's way. it's getting better I'm taking a survey Pride in Pahoa is all around and shows in so many ways. Clean sidewalks and streets. A welcome spirit. That is what a tourist is looking for and locals too. We live here and we are very happy to be here. A community is what you make it. I live in Leilani Estates, and we work hard to make it a good and safe community. I have never seen the great community support of most people anywhere, that compares to the people who come together in Puna and Hawaii in general!! Appreciation— churches Mainly from church The entire community enjoys the annual bon dance at the Young Buddhist Assn. Hall. This event helps to bring all nationalities together. I do not know of anyone that cannot find a church to attend. There are also many events that take place in this town. a few good churches Appreciation— certain locations Love the museum /community garden. I feel community only at the Natch, out front. Pahoa Neighborhood place AA meetings. merchant assoc is very active in Pahoa Town 0 Many closeknit communities are an asset to living here. Networking and sharing is happening on a more vibrant level, and this should be encouraged. There should be more space for and easier to meet as groups within the community. The Museum is doing a wonderful service by opening its space to various art and cultural groups, but is limited. A vibrant community -built center that is open to all can become the dynamic life of the village where there is an ongoing community art studio, fitness classes, free school, and cultural events. It could be the apex of many spokes going out to Puna neighborhoods that have local community centers. Need more community— need more (NOTE both "FAIR" & "GOOD were checked, "Fair" enter online.) i haven't seen much happening in pahoa. None, nonexistant unless you have children who play sports. not much. This town is still seeking an identity. it feels like its dying and is going under and no one can hear it screaming very little going on like community watch, farmers markets, community gardens, etc. at neighborhood level, limited or nonexistent facilities for neighborhoods to use. "blink and you miss it" nature of Pahoa, violent nature of Pahoa town, Need more community— divisions within community and discussion of negative elements Generally good sense of community among those of the communal philosophy, However strong divisions among the Have's & Have -nots. Need to abolish pursuit of dollars. coming from mna ( ?), coming into Pahoa often feel looked down on /unwelcome @ stores Racially divided Communities need to cooperate more Good, but diverse to the point of antagonism. We close knit. Let nobody in yeah I would love to see more integration & mixing between the locals & the ha'ole. I'm not sure how to do this but I'd love to see it. (the Natch vs Cash and Carry, etc) church is offensive in this context I find many of the people who have moved here from the US continent to be rude. Dangerous hippies without a job always looking for a fix instead of a job. CDP Alienated All Run down looking neighborhood attracting people with lower values, but there is a sense of love and acceptance. There are some good groups and people out there, however the bad seeds spoil the bunch. There are violent and dangerous people who may or may not use drugs and alcohol who can make it difficult to trust anyone. When there is something that a group is proud of I seems like the entire community is ready to wear that pride and brings the community together. People are polite, tho hesitant to be open to new folks. Cultural? Fear factor? Prejudices? With no local radio, hard to know about mtgs, etc. MANY people, young and old, feel alienated, disenfranchised, hopeless. Too many loners /leave me alone types. I know the history of Puna (all should read Land and Power in Hawaii by Cooper and Daws, but then most of Puna peoples are pretty damn illiterate - if it was up to me reading that book would be required before voting) and having been educated, I find it surprising that there is much of any sense of community in this mess. And the one area that had community, Kalapana, was pretty well wiped out. Need more community — locations and services provided we have great churhes more group activies for family, singles, and eledely all Make better parks and make town promote community. not anything offered for young people. Community needs activities for youth beyond sports, churches and scouting. What about music, art, and dance for kids who don't play sports? MORE THINGS FOR THE CHILDREN 24/7 SAFE, FUN, KID CENTER Adult /Senior Activities @ low cost BUILDING FOR SENIORS TO MEET we are a special community, much could be done to help that be a living reality. Many folks like me, don't care for church, but would love opportunities to socialize. Expand library services and parking. Many closeknit communities are an asset to living here. It could be the apex of many spokes going out to Puna neighborhoods that have local community centers. Need more community— outreach, networking, publicity Need more community service organizations and networking between churches to help each other more outreach with information to churches etc on what is going on could always have more and more access and more advertising of Need to coordinate their work There is no unified connection between all the different churches, community & neighborhood groups We need to really celebrate the diversity of Hawaii and encourage respect among and between groups. Catholic church and many religious groups are not helpful in this way, especially to young women and couples who may need counseling and family planning. Domestic abuse is a big issue as are drugs. Other suggestions Build communities around people instead of cars. Move away from the petroleum based economy. Garbage pick up incentives. I wish community center was utilized more. Encouragement for all to help and watch out for each other. the neighborhood sucks everyone looks like they on drugs or selling drugs everything looks so run down i think they should make a rule like Waikoloa that residents that live in the area have to keep their home and yard nice without any eye sores. At all times the Hawaiian tradition of Ohana should be the norm rather than the exception. Do we want to become like the others at the loss of who we are now and hope to preserve in the future? more people need to get involved in their community and take ownership and pride in creating something of value that can be handed down to their children and grandchildren. We need to market involvement, we could give jobs to the community building the trails that connect us together. our communities are so isolated from one another we no longer believe we are all the same; human beings.
