Suggestions Pay for the best teachers money can buy! Model the best performing schools so others can benefit! start over wih new board members More selection of classes by students os our kids are prepared to work when graduated. Continued support of the public, charter, and private are needed. We have enough schools but they need $ for improvements and the teachers should be accountable for teaching very poor system when you graduate kids that can not read or write you should be ashamed More teachers, more training, more funds. But have heard good reports about Pahoa Elementary teachers. need legislative fix /decentralize X -ing guard at Pahoa Village Rd. & Kaohe Hmstd Rd Pay teachers more money and incentives and you may be able to attract more qualified teachers. There is no way good teachers can make a living on these islands with the low pay and lack of community support /buy in. Great job being done by the charter schools, the whole public school system need a giant overhall of administration so the $ can flow down to the ones who teach and the ones that learn, our students in public school lack in so much and most of it due to lack of funds. More and better teachers. Well, we need what every community needs. the schools here look more like prisons, with streets running between them. and what is with putting a schoolight on the highway? was safety for the children not a concern for the developers and the parents? I think most of us know what issues here, need to be addressed. Going by what i have heard from parents and students... Our schools need serious help. Expect more frpm the students, get more! The student is Hawaii's most preciouse resource and our future, why are we not giving them the same education as schools on Oahu get? It's the same statewide Education Board. The public schools are being ridiculously sucked dry of funds and the kids suffer, as do the teachers and other school workers. Parent involvement in the classroom and other school operations is a proven successful way to increase educational quality, especially when funds are tight. Parents and kupuna should be tapped as valuable partners in their children's education. do not have children in school but have heard poor to fair reviews from neighbors except for the HAAS prep school. New gym at Pahoa High School should be made available to the community when not in use by students to encourage more community - building recreational opportunities -- volleyball teams, basketball teams, workouts, etc. Public schools —good Go Daggers! Very Happy with Pahoa Elementary More teachers, more training, more funds. But have heard good reports about Pahoa Elementary teachers. Go Daggers! The new Pahoa Gym is great; still need more books! I've heard so many good things about improvements at the Pahoa public schools that I'm impressed. Charter schools are also accessible. Only lack is out -post community college classes. Public schools —need improvement Update Pahoa schools Its really sad the Pahoa School is loosing its career counselor & has lost its only counselor. the decimation of PHS is a disgrace and the youth will suffer. No confidence survey of teachers for administration speaks VOLUMES. How will 2 counselors for 6 grades counsel the kids - and who will help them prepare for transition to college? This school is a little old? Pahoa schools need a more cheerful paintjob, they look like backwater prisons. No wonder the kids' performance in some of the worst in the country. we need more money for our school like our own libary so we the students can have a better place to do our studies and etc. Also we need a football team i believe with a football team it will keep the students more out of trouble and gives them a positive thing to do and so that students wiuld stop smoking and doing drugs so they can play football. Public schools shoudlnt have to were a uniform because other outside have the same shirt and may not even go to the school. Pahoa High & Inter School ought to be torn down and rebuilt! Needs improvement, I don't think the bad reputation that Pahoa school has is for nothing but at least it's better than when i went there. public school P Public poor the high school could use a renovation i think There should be another elementary school in the Pahoa area, and Pahoa Intermediate should be separate from the high school. Also, I think there should be locker rooms and a parking lot added to the new Helene Hale Gymnasium, and the baseball field needs to be fixed as soon as possible. Support for alternative school options TRADITIONAL EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM IS A FAILED SYSTEM, ABOLISH IT AND START OVER WITH SELECT LEARNING PROGRAMS MORE ALTERNATIVE EDDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES Need better afterschool services need more charter /private schools More charter schools ( "charter" is circled - mdb) More needed Need more support of charter schools & community input in operation & curricula of public schools More charter & privates - Pahoa School is like a prison! See: J >C> Pearce: The Magical Child The Magical Child Revisited The Continum Concept - Liedloff Allow other after school uses Charter Schools -ESP. smaller schools - are great for the kids - we need more! Charter Schools need more funding. lot's of choices; quality of public schools could be better I live in the area, but my children attend school in Hilo as the schools in the area either did not have good reputations or were full and not accepting students (charter schools). Failing public schools and minimal support for the charter school. Thank god for HAAS and Waldorf. Need smaller schools throughout rather than centralized. Each subdivision should have it's own school, reduce traffic in mornings. Charter schools should receive same funding per student as Public. But the Charters and privates are great Very limited options and not so many openings Need more preschools. We love HAAS, however the Pahoa High and Middle School does not develop a 'yes I can do it' mantality. New schools must be provided for the increase in population. At least make a place on the map for them. More Charter Schools! Charter schools —good more small charter schools! Charter school seems like our only hope for a positive change for the future. Public schools are too expensive for unemployment. HAAS is excellent charter great! Love my Charter Charter schools make it better - -- The Charter schools are really good but the public schools are not HAAS rocks - need a better crosswalk H.A.A.S. does a great job. It should get more support from the state. The Public Schools need to follow the example that H.A.A.S. has set. Pahoa High and Intermediate needs a new building and the old ones torn down. Solar panels need to be installed. Charter schools are doing their best ... good that schools are right in town, not car - dependent for everyone as was (stupidly) done in Kea'au. DOE needs complete overhaul, unfortunately not in scope of Pahoa town plan. HAAS is GREAT & has a long waiting list. Great job being done by the charter schools, the whole public school system need a giant overhall of administration so the $ can flow down to the ones who teach and the ones that learn, our students in public school lack in so much and most of it due to lack of funds. we need to help Steve Hirakami with his model He dose more with less- I don't have children in schools now but from what I have heard, Hass and Montisori are good but Pahoa public school, not. charters are the best option for non violent educational environments. HAAS is a very nice school Hawaiian Academy of arts and sciences good... We have an excellent, Charter School. Keep the charter shcools funded. do not have children in school but have heard poor to fair reviews from neighbors except for the HAAS prep school. New gym at Pahoa High School should be made available to the community when not in use by students to encourage more community - building recreational opportunities -- volleyball teams, basketball teams, workouts, etc. Continuing education needed We need lower division college (community: state /junior: private) in the local area so students don't have to commute and also for employment. I could my degree if there was a school above high school here. We could use a technical and trade school and I for one would like a clown college (clowning is an honorable profession, more so than politics) here for a circus the place could use in the local area. A Hawaiian circus could be a fun idea. More Night Schools for improving Adult education More School Bands More community colleges in Pahoa area Recommend offerig vocational training programs /apprenticeships, located in Pahoa. Also provide extension classes for University of Hilo. Continuing Education in Pahoa I've heard so many good things about improvements at the Pahoa public schools that I'm impressed. Charter schools are also accessible. Only lack is out -post community college classes. "lifetime' learning, extension classes might be embraced by the retirees in the area. Hawaiian - focused education needed Hawaiian traditions and culture and language should be made mandatory so that the culture will not be lost in the future. How do we extend more Hawaii - centric schooling? Violence too much school violence, need to teach more Aloha! Out dated, needs support, positive non - violent training for all educators. charters are the best option for non violent educational environments. Parental involvement needed The schools seem fine as the kids that I know are doing well with their studies. The schools are only as good as the parents that send their kids to these schools. Need more parent involvment in their child's education. Volunteer before you complain! Schools need parent involvement and to create a sense of community within the school and the families whose students attend The public schools are being ridiculously sucked dry of funds and the kids suffer, as do the teachers and other school workers. Parent involvement in the classroom and other school operations is a proven successful way to increase educational quality, especially when funds are tight. Parents and kupuna should be tapped as valuable partners in their children's education. General comments - -good Getting better! Awesome! The schools in Puna are good enough. Best no children here LOVE PAHOA LIBRARY Good student results for questionable conditions There are great opportunities for education Best on island. Pahoa schools are doing great under the circumstances (the circumstantial cloud be composed of geothermal gases like lead that has devastating effect on learning ability of children). The schools look very nice and clean Many options for parents /students that addresses their personal needs. Competition among schools promote higher expectations. Good schools with dedicated personnel - -thank you all. its fine just the way it is Pahoa School has improved and HAAS is OK General comments Schools could always be better as long as they are open seem to be getting more up to date social chaos, poor reading and ? skills are all too common. Great options besides public schools. They seem to suck. There are a lot of educational reforms currently in place in the schools. The State has intiated school reform with new standards, bench marks, and General Learner Outcomes. The federal government has also provided funds under the Race To The Top program and has made several changes in the way curriculum is delivered and in the way that students are serviced. The HAAS school provides alternate education programs. Kamehameha also provides quality programs and services to students of our area. not familiar with this topic, although what is a charter school? can people afford it? The schools should not be affected by the Pahoa Plan as it should not have any jurisdiction over them. It doesn't seem like our kids get a very good education. Our schools are terrible, most kids can barely read and write let alone do alegra or above math... exempt public schools Are schools teaching solutions to our many problems? NCLB - Pahoa schools are rated near the bottom, lots of absenteeism I sometimes worry about what the children these days are learning in school... if anything of real life value... but I think that there seems to be enough sq footage space of the schools to offer the children that are being raised in the area. Do you even need to ask about this? Abysmal choices any way you look at it. schools are available, but how effective are they? The good students will excel anywhere. It's the average students that need the benefit of a good school. My friends say that they have to home school their kids after school, but my kids are grown... I sure see a lot of home - schooled kids.
