Remembering Hilo’s “Tax Lady” Mrs. Setsuko (Sets), (Omonaka) Fukushima will be remembered fondly by thousands of taxpayers in East Hawai‘i whom she helped each year since the 1970s. She was the Local Coordinator for the East Hawai‘i A A R P T a x - A i d e Program. The Tax-Aide Program is the nation’s largest free, volunteerrun tax preparation and assistance service for the elderly and low income families. Last year her team of volunteers with on-going collaboration with Coordinated Services for the Elderly helped more than 800 taxpayers receive back more than $280,000 in refunds from the IRS and the State at the Hawai‘i County Aging & Disability Resource Center. In April 2013 she was honored by being named the first AARP Tax-Aide Fellow in the State of Hawai‘i. After taxes, her two favorite hobbies were mahjong and fishing. For 35 years she was well-known as one of the most successful shoreline fishermen by Isles Pier. The regulars would always save her a spot in case she showed up. Before she retired and began doing volunteer tax preparation, she was the proprietress of the Stop-n- Shop Superette in Kaumana for many years. She then worked as an accountant and office manager for various local businesses. She passed away on July 31, 2013. She is survived by her son Ken Keida Fukushima, daughter-in-law Tinamarie and grandson George. Surviving brothers Akira, Thomas, Rupert and Stanley Omonaka; Sister Kikuyo Sueyoshi; sister-in -law Margaret Nicholson; numerous nieces, nephews and their children.
