HomeMy WebLinkAbout2014-01-10 Committee on the Status of Women Minutes COMMITTEE ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN Friday, January 10, 2014, 10:00 a.m. Convened at Office of the Prosecuting Attorney - Hilo 655 Kilauea Avenue, Conference Room B and Office of the Prosecuting Attorney – Kona 81-9801 Haleki‘i Street, Suite 150, Kealakekua Video Conference Room via video conferencing CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Carol Kitaoka at 10:26 a.m. ROLL CALL PRESENT EXCUSED Carol Kitaoka, Chair Brooke Derby Katie Nova, Vice-Chair Elena Cabatu Farrah-Marie Gomes, Secretary Mele Spencer, Treasurer Kim Schneider GUEST Hazel Beck Heidi Dangaran, Kamehameha Schools Cyd Hoffeld Margaret Masunaga (ex-officio) A quorum was present. APPROVAL OF AGENDA The agenda was approved as submitted. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Minutes from the December 18, 2013 meeting were approved as submitted. TREASURER’S REPORT Expenditure report was distributed. The $5,000 from Karen Eoff for Jill Murray’s trip is already reflected in the budget. Lee Lord, Business Manager in Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, reminds the CSW to approve every expenditure before we make it. The treasurer’s report was approved as submitted. STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC None Hawai‘i County is an Equal Opportunity Provider and Employer CORRESPONDENCE The Institute for Women's Policy Research submitted correspondence with a summary of activities in celebration of their 25 year anniversary and a look ahead at important women’s policy issues for 2014. REPORTS A. LIAISON 1. Legislative Update – No report B. HEALTH 1. Women’s Health Month – No report C. EDUCATION 1. Equal Pay – No report 2. Urgent Services Directory Farrah-Marie G. reported that the directories have been ordered through OfficeMax. They needed to order more paper to fulfill the quantity of 10,000 copies, so the order has not been completed yet. Directories are anticipated to be available by the February meeting. 3. Voter Registration Kim S. reported that the deadline to register for the primary election is July 10 and the deadline to register for the general election is October 6. Kim S. has volunteered to coordinate CSW participation in the Kona Stroll on June 8 and September 21. The purpose of the event is to educate the community about voting and provide the opportunity for those who are interested to register. Farrah-Marie G. will check with Brooke D. to see if there might be similar voter registration education opportunities in North Hawaii. Cyd H. and Mele S. will look into similar opportunities in East Hawaii. 4. Teen Dating Violence Prevention – Jill Murray Farrah-Marie G. made a motion to form a committee to coordinate the details for Dr. Jill Murray’s trip to speak on teen dating violence prevention. Kim S. seconded the motion. The motion was passed unanimously. Farrah-Marie G. made a motion to have Carol K., Katie N., Cyd H., and Hazel B. serve on the Murray trip planning committee. Hazel B. seconded the motion. The motion was passed unanimously. The committee will have their first meeting on January 21 at 5:30pm via Skype. 2 Update on donations: Before leaving the CSW at the end of last year, Nancy K. got a verbal commitment from Fresh Onishi in the amount of $1,500. Cyd H. is still communicating with Greggor Ilagan, with no decision yet. All other verbal commitments have yet to be sent before the Council: Valerie Poindexter - $2,500 (Farrah-Marie G. reported that this should be on the council agenda later this month) Zendo Kern – $3,500 (Cyd H. will follow-up) Brenda Ford - $10,000 (Carol K. will follow-up) Dru Kanuha - $5,000 (Hazel B. will follow-up) We need to follow-up with Elena on the status of our request to the HSCSW. 5. Real Women Creative Writing Contest Approximately 90 essays were submitted by the December 20 deadline. All essays have been delivered to committee members for review. Results are expected back by January 31. The essay contest awards ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, March 30. Three quotes still need to be obtained, preferably from Hapuna, Hilton, and Marriott. D. Community Reports 1. Networking – No report UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. Project Ideas Kim S. obtained quotes for a vinyl banner from OfficeMax, Instant Sign and Costco. OfficeMax was the cheapest vendor at $90 with a turn around time of about one week. Instant Sign quoted between $108-$120 based on having a print ready file. Costco only does printing on poster paper, no vinyl. Margaret M. will ask a colleague for assistance with creating a print ready file for the CSW logo. Currently, there are no funds allocated for printing of the banner. Mele S. will look into the best way to allocate these funds. The quantity of banners hasn’t yet been decided. We should try to bring the current banner to the next meeting so everyone can see what it looks like. 3 Hazel B. reported that Justin Brown would welcome a CSW ad in their robotics program. The group is currently demonstrating prototypes that will be competing later this year. B. Civics education citizenship project There will be an awards ceremony on January 22 for the winners of the poster contest for the “American Democracy and the Rule of Law: Why Every Vote Matters” calendars. The ceremony will begin at 3:45pm at the Governor’s Office. DOE Superintendent Matayoshi and Governor Abercrombie will be presenting the awards. The Hawaii State Bar Association Civics Education committee assisted with sponsoring airfare for the student winners from Hilo and Maui. The posters will be displayed in the Capitol, then will visit each of the other islands. The committee intends to do PSAs for newspaper and radio to announce when the posters will be on each island. C. Conference The leadership conference committee met with the larger planning committee on January 8 at Saffron’s in Waimea. The committee has decided to plan for a conference in March 2015 to coincide with Women’s History Month. The committee is working on identifying the target audience and specific theme for the conference. Additional details will be provided to the CSW on a regular basis. ANNOUNCEMENTS The next CSW meeting is scheduled for Friday, February 14, 2014 at 10:00am at the Waimea Center at 65-1158 Mamalahoa Highway, Suite 2C in Kamuela.
