APPROVAL OF AGENDA The following items will be added to the agenda for the next meeting 1. Commission support of SB 526 will be added to the agenda for the next meeting. 2. Discussion on approving money to the “Pride Prom” radio spot and contribution we can make to this project. 3. Equal Pay – Elena Cabatu stated that $400 is allocated for radio ads on equal pay and is reallocating this amount elsewhere. Suggested someone else take the lead on this. Correction to the agenda was made – Section IV, Item D should be “Community” reports. Katie Nova moved to approve the agenda after correction made. Carol Kitaoka seconded the motion. The motion was passed. MINUTES The following corrections to the minutes were made: Spelling of Kathy Peter’s name is corrected. Page 1 - Robert’s Rule of Order – Kim Schneider clarified that the Robert’s Rule would be used for the approval of minutes and treasurer’s report sections of the meeting only. Motions and voting will still be required for all other action items on the agenda. 1 Page 2 – Equal Pay Fine corrected to “find” Page 2 - Ads Elena Cabatu clarified that the ads were for Teen Dating and Violence Prevention and Teen Pregnancy Prevention. Page 3, Item C, #1 – the group decided to delete the last sentence: Katie Nova asked…. Page 3, Item D – The walk is an event of the YWCA not the YMCA. Elena Cabatu also clarified that funds for both events were coming from the State Commission. The minutes were accepted as corrected. TREASURER’S REPORT None STATEMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC None CORRESPONDENCE None REPORTS A. EDUCATION 1. Urgent Services Directory Farrah-Marie Gomes reported $1,500 from the University of Hawai‘i in support of the Urgent Service Directory 2. Equal Pay Elena Cabatu reported that $400 is allocated for radio ads on equal pay. She suggested reallocating this amount elsewhere and suggested that someone else take the lead on this. Katie Nova stated that the ads are great and more money is needed; suggested amount of $2,000 for ads. Farrah-Marie Gomes stated that she can ask for assistance from the marketing people for assistance in doing the ads. 3. Hawaii Teen Outreach Program Nancy Kelly to report at next meeting 4. Voter Registration 2 Carol Kitaoka reported that the Department of Education is working on voter education; educating the students on voting and understanding the issues and registering them to vote. The Bar Association and the Department of Education are partnering on this issue. Katie Nova suggested that the Committee contact the Bar Association for more information. 5. Essay Contest thth Carol Kitaoka reported that there were 57 entries from the 5 & 6 graders, 14 thththth entries from the 7 & 8 graders, 6 entries from the 9 & 10 graders and 28 thth entries from the 11 & 12 graders. There are more winners than prizes so she requested to increase the essay budget by $200. Carol Kitaoka moved to increase the budget to $3,3100 from $3,210 to accommodate the extra prizes. The goal for this contest is to encourage and empower kids and teachers. Farrah-Marie Gomes seconded the motion. The motion was passed. The essay contest is scheduled for Sunday, March 10, 2013. Elena Cabatu will be the MC; Kim Schneider will give the President’s message; Katie Nova will give the thank you to the teachers and Carol Kitaoka will give the thank you at the end of the program. B. Health 1. Women’s Health Month No report. 2. Ads Elena Cabatu reported on Teen Prevention and Pregnancy Prevention ads. She will be meeting with the State Commission and will suggest pulling resources together through radio ads thru the DOE. Wants to see ads go statewide; will ask the counties to buy spots. Interns at UH Manoa can help with scripting. Nancy Kelly reported that Hawaii Teen Outreach Program is a positive youth program. The Office of the Prosecuting Attorney may have some money and we could partner with them. C. Liaison 1. Legislative Update Cathy Betts, Executive Director of the Commission on the Status of Women distributed copies of the Bills which the Commission is following and reported on the following bills: a. SB526 SD1 Hospital emergency Compassionate Care; Emergency Contraception. This bill requires that the hospital must offer emergency contraception to sex assault victims. Kim Schneider suggested that the Committee be informed on when hearings are scheduled so we can write testimonies. Kim Schneider will put together a testimony in support of this bill and we can vote on it at the next meeting. b. HB916 Minimum Wage; Consumer Price Index 3 c. Asset Limit; Temporary Assistance for Need Families Program D. Community Reports A. Hawaii County Women’s Hall of Fame – Committee No report B. Mentoring Brooke Derby agreed at the last meeting that she will take the roll on this and will meet with Kathy Peters. Kim Schneider will get information on mentoring models in Brooklyn and share it with the Committee. C. Membership It was stated by Molly Stebbins that we have one more opening on the committee. Kim Schneider introduced our newest member, Mele Spencer. A lei was presented to Mele to welcome her to the Committee. Election of Committee Secretary – the responsibility of the secretary is to keep track of meetings; review minutes, make revision/corrections. Farrah-Marie Gomes was nominated for the position of secretary which she accepted. ANNOUNCEMENT A. Next Meeting Friday, March 8, 2013 in Waimea. Lee Watanabe to secure a site.
