This year 968 returns were prepared in 20 days with 1,375 volunteer hours. If that’s not impressive, the East Hawai‘i Tax-aide’s also won the Margaret Drescher Tax-Wise Online District Award. This award originally recognized sites that converted to e-filing. It now recognizes districts that convert from desktop to Tax-Wise Online returns. Coordinated Services thanks you for your hard work, dedication and willingness to provide this valuable service to our community and for FREE!!! Congratulations for a job well done!!! Kona Coordinated Services for the Elderly office is located at the West Hawai‘i Civic Center at 74-5044 Ane Keohokalole Highway, Building B, in the Parks and Recreation Office. Coordinated Services for the Elderly assists Kupuna with information about organizations, agencies, and programs that may be able to help them. CSE also provides outreach to seniors. CSE provides medical transportation, essential shopping, helping seniors acquire benefits. CSE also provides chore services to those who qualify. CSE are also the station managers for the Senior Companion Program on the Big Island. The Kona CSE supervisor is Junie-Ann Kamoku, who has been with CSE for 25 years. Kona CSE also has three Community Service Worker III; they are Angie Onaka, supervisor for the Information and assistance component, who has been with CSE for 15 years; Terry Terada, transportation supervisor with 10 years of service; Janice Klingenberg, chore supervisor, 5+ years of service; and our new Community Service Worker I, Sissy Waite. Also CSE clerk, Jill Sugiyama, with 13 years of service. Mahalo Eileen Matsumoto Eileen Matsumoto is a dedicated volunteer who assists Coordinated Services for the Elderly with manning the CSE office, answering the phones, assisting seniors with filling out registration forms, filing, making copies of documents/needed forms and assisting with many other tasks. Eileen is meticulous in her work and always willing to take on new tasks. She not only volunteers with CSE, she also mans the information booth at the West Hawai‘i Civic Center, and helps out in the Mayor’s office. She is one busy lady!! In her spare time, Eileen enjoys gardening, shopping, and exercising by walking Keebe, her dog. Eileen retired after working 31 years at Kona Community Hospital in the dietary department. Eileen is dedicated to helping her community. She enjoys volunteering as a way of sharing and caring for others. It also helps her to know what is going on in her community and provides her opportunities to learn new skills. Mahalo Eileen for all your dedication and assistance! Big Island Senior Stars Talent Show This year’s Big Island Senior Talent Show was an overwhelming success. Over 300 seniors attended the event at the Old Airport Pavilion on April 11 to support the island wide program. 12 of the 19 senior clubs in attendance brought their talent to the stage to share with the audience including first timers to the show, Nā‘ālehu and Pāhala senior clubs. Each participant had their chance to shine with a wide variety of talents showcased including tap dancing, singing, comedic skits and veil dancing. It never ceases to amaze the talent that abounds within our senior clubs, we can’t wait to see what the clubs come up with next year! Mayor William Kenoi and Alan Parker presented the awards to Edward Madamba (pictured left) and Bob Green (pictured right) who represented Bette Green. 32nd Anniversary Hawai‘i Kupuna Hula Festival The 32nd Annual Hawai‘i Kupuna Hula Festival will descend on the Sheraton Kona Resort & Spa, September 10th and 11th. Doors will open at 4:45 p.m. and performances begin at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are just $10 per person per night. Solo performances and the International Ho‘olaule‘a are scheduled for Wednesday night and the Royal Court appearance will precede the Kane, Wahine, and Mixed group competitions on Thursday night. 26 halau have entered the festival to date. This year’s theme “Na Mele O Na Moku O Oahu” focuses on songs about Oahu. Each halau had to find a song that spoke of a district on Oahu. Join us to watch these performances about the Gathering Isle! If you are unable to provide the advance notice, the Elderly Activities Division staff will attempt to make a reasonable accommodation to satisfy the request as long as it does not impose an undue hardship.
