Communication No. 2014-59
Patrick Conant
P.D. Box 1172
Volcano HI, 96785
August 2, 2014
Mr. Duane Kanuha,
Planning Director
County of Hawaii
101 Pauahi Suite 3
Hilo, H 196720
Dear Mr. Kanuha,
I am writing to you today to file a complaint regarding the bright green Thai food truck that was
parking at the end of Old Volcano Highway,at the low end of Volcano Village. It appears to be
operating illegally on property zoned agricultural. I understand that the County has already
notified the owner of his non-compliance and I thank you for that action. The location is highly
visible from Highway 11 and I believe it constitutes a safety hazard for passing cars that pull off
the highway there to get to it. Also, that"prime" but illegal location for tourist customers and
local people headed to HVNP or Ka'u gives the owner an unfair advantage over legitimate
businesses in Volcano Village.
Lastly, I think Volcano community will not be opposed to the business operating legally within
the commercial district of Volcano Village, assuming the owner can lease or buy a parking spot
for the truck and acquire any permit(s)from the County as necessary. However, I would be
very much opposed to the issuing of any form of special use permit that would allow the
business to continue operation on Ag. zoned land in Volcano.
Sincerely,
atrick Conant
