`Ahalanui Park Closed to Repair Storm -
Damaged Warm Pond
The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation has closed `Ahalanui Park in
lower Puna so cleanup and repairs may be made to the park's popular swimming pond.
High surf from Tropical Storm Iselle damaged the rock walls and concrete walkways
forming the pond's perimeter and deposited debris and boulders into the swimming
area, prompting Hawaii County to close the pond as a safety precaution.
General contractor William C. Loeffler Construction Inc. started cleanup and repair work
Monday, October 6, and expects to finish the project, weather and conditions permitting,
by November 10. The entire park, including the pond, picnic pavilions and parking area,
is now closed to protect park patrons and accommodate heavy equipment needed for
the repair work.
A follow-up announcement will be issued once the exact reopening date becomes
known.
The Department of Parks and Recreation thanks `Ahalanui Park patrons and the
general public for their continued patience and understanding while the repairs are
being made.
