On December 30, 2014, Patricia Dunn retired
from the South Hilo office after 17 years of
dedicated service. CSE would like to take
this opportunity to thank Patricia for all of her
hard work and wish her well as she embarks
on another chapter in her life. A Hui Hou!

Who’s that friendly voice on the telephone,
it’s Loriann Udo!!! Loriann is CSE’s new Clerk
III. Her appointment officially began on
November 3, 2014. Prior to CSE, Loriann
worked in the Parks and Recreation Administration
office at the Aupuni Center. We are
happy to have her as part of our team.

LORRIE AKINA, HONOKA‘A’S
COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM ASSISTANT
Please welcome Lorrie Akina, Honoka‘a’s
new Community Service Program Assistant.
Lorrie started working for Coordinated
Services for the Elderly in June.
Lorrie was born and raised in Paauhau and is
the oldest of two children. She graduated
from St. Joseph’s and Hawai‘i Community
College with an associates degree in nursing
and is a Licensed Practical Nurse. Lorrie
worked for 14 years at Hui Malama Ola Na
Oiwi in the Community Outreach program.
She is also certified as a cancer patient
navigator via Imi Hale.
Lorrie is a mother of two daughters, and
grandmother of one. She is also a caregiver
to her parents. She loves spending time with
her family, going to the movies; Lorrie also
loves to bake, garden, and sew and she loves
football (the Tennessee Titans is her team).
Lorrie’s philosophy in life: “Treat people the
way you want to be treated; always give to
others...be honest and trustworthy”.
Lorrie’s CSE office is located at the Hale
Hau‘oli Senior Center in Honoka‘a. She can
be reached at 775-7503.

WEST HAWAII CSE VOLUNTEER
RECOGNITION LUNCHEON
On November 7th 2014, West Hawaii CSE
celebrated our volunteers with a luncheon,
"CSE Volunteers Make Every Day Feel Like
Christmas" at the West Hawaii Civic Center.
Games, prizes, gifts, leis, certificates, and
lunch were presented to the volunteers in
appreciation for their dedication and
assistance over the years. Mahalo to all of
our wonderful volunteers who truly make
every day feel like Christmas!!!

AARP TAXES IN 2015
CSE will be partnering with AARP Tax Aide
Counselors once again to provide income tax
preparation services to low income seniors
who need help filing their 2014 tax returns.
Coordinated Services will once again assist in
scheduling appointments at the Aging and
Disability Resource Center starting January
2, 2015. Seniors living in the East Hawai‘i
area are encouraged to call our CSE South
Hilo office at 961-8777 to schedule an
appointment or contact your nearest district
offices to assist you in your community.
Appointments go like hotcakes, so call early!!!
WHAT’S NEW AT COORDINATED SERVICES
NEW Days and Locations for 2015 Senior
ID card Distribution in East Hawai‘i:
The South Hilo Office at 1055 Kino‘ole Street,
suite 106 will be distributing Senior ID cards
“DAILY” Monday through Friday, from 7:45-
4:30 p.m. except on holidays. Staff will also
be assisting Seniors at the Ka Nani O Hilo
Office also known as Kamana Senior Center
on scheduled days twice per month. Our
North Hilo office will be at the Laupāhoehoe
Train Museum and Pāpa‘aloa General Store
starting in January. With the recent relocation
from our Pāhoa Senior Center, our
Kea‘au Office will be distributing ID cards
Monthly on designated Fridays from 1:00-
3:00 p.m. For further information, please call
our South Hilo office at 961-8777 or your
nearest Coordinated Services District Office.

The Closure of the Pāhoa Senior Center DID
NOT affect our services to our valued
SENIORS!!! Coordinated Services for the
Elderly (CSE) has RELOCATED back to the
Kea‘au Community Center and continues to
provide much needed services such as
Information and Assistance, Outreach and
Transportation on a weekly basis. You may
call either our CSE Kea‘au Office at 966-
5800 or our CSE Hilo Office at 961-8777 for
more information or further assistance.

Hello 2015! As we welcome the New Year we are so
thankful to have enjoyed a wonderful fun filled year
with all of you. Our program looks forward to
providing another exciting year for all of our seniors.

Wellness Fair 2014
2014 First Hawaiian Bank Primetime Wellness Fair,
co-sponsored by Department of Parks & Recreation
Elderly Activities Division, was held at the Edith
Kanakaole Tennis Stadium on October 24, 2014.
Over 600 seniors from around the island passed
through the doors to visit fifty vendors ranging from
financial information, care giving, home care, senior
IDs, flu, shingles, pneumonia shots, Walk Wise,
health insurance, Alzheimer, Better Business Bureau,
just to name a few. Ending the event with our
senior’s favorite game, BINGO, as well as the grand
prize drawing of a $200 gas card and a 2-night stay at
the Kamuela Inn.

Robert is moving to California to be closer
to his family and he will be greatly missed
by all those that worked with him.

Halloween Ground Golf Spooktacular!
Halloween brought out all the spooks at
Maka‘eo Park for the Ground Golf
Spooktacular! 100 seniors from around
the island came to Kona for a game of
ground golf and some scary fun. The Kona
Mauka Rotary Club sponsored the event
providing volunteers, prizes and a bite to
eat. Congratulaons to our spooktacular
partcipants!

Senior Class Fun
Kamana’s Watercolor, Plein Air Art Studio &
Woodblock printing class held their 1st Annual
Senior Art Exhibit at the Hawai‘i Japanese Center on
October 22nd-30th. The talented artists displayed
over 60 paintings for the community to enjoy.
Kamana’s Zumba Halloween Party was a big hit at Aunty
Sally’s Lu‘au Hale. Instructors Faith Elarionoff and Harriet
Rocha coordinated the fun filled event bringing in over 100
seniors. The party consisted of a costume contest, dessert
contest, lots of dancing and a delicious dinner.

2014 Hawai‘i Kupuna Hula Festival
32 Years of Music Hula and Memories
500 participants from 26 halaus, including 5 from
Japan, 1 from Okinawa, 1 from California, 2 from
Maui, 1 Moloka‘i Halau, 2 groups from Oahu and 14
groups from the Big Island, gathered to celebrate this
years theme “Na Mele O Na Moku O Oahu” Songs
of the Districts of Oahu. The Sheraton Kona Resort
and Spa hosted both the competition and craft fair on
September 10th and 11th.
Over 1,200 people attended the two day festival to
watch the 26 halau compete
for top prizes in 6 categories.
The individual Tutu Wahine
and Tutu Kane dances took
place on Wednesday night,
followed by the group
competitions in the Mixed,
Wahine, Kane and Overall
categories on Thursday night.
During each performance,
5 judges rated the dancers
on overall appearance,
presentation, hand gestures
and costumes, among other
categories, using a 5-10 point
scale. The top three winners in each of the competitions
received prizes generously donated by local
sponsors: First Hawaiian Bank, Big Island Candies,
Kukio Resorts, LLC., Akamai Photo, Hawai‘i Island
Festivals, Halau Kala‘akeakauikawekiu, County of
Hawai‘i Parks and Recreation Elderly Activities
Division, and the Kupuna Hula Festival. This year’s
individual winners included; third place in the Kane
category Allen Diorec Na Kupuna O Moana, second
place; Mickey Norvell dancing with Ka Pa Hula O
Maui, and first place individual Kane winner from Na
Kupuna O Ka‘u; Kananiokalani Neizman.

Moana, and first place Kane group winners from
Waimea were Kalikokalehua Hula Studio. Third
place in the group Wahine division was, Halau O
Mailelaulani-Kamana from Hilo. Second place
awards went to Oahu’s Na Kupuna O Ko‘olau, and
first place winners from Waimea, Kalikokalehua
Hula Studio.
The three winning halaus in the mixed group
competition were; third place Na Kupuna O Kohala
second place; Na Kupuna O Moana, and the overall
mixed group winner, Kalikokalehua Hula Studio.
The title of overall group winner went to first time
entrants and Waimea group, Kalikokalehua Hula
Studio.
The 33rd Annual Hawai‘i Kupuna Hula Festival is
tentatively scheduled for September 9-10, 2015 at the
Sheraton Kona Resort and Spa.
