Purpose: To provide information on the subject study at public information meetings to be held on January 23 and 24, 2008. 2. Points of Major Interest and Facts. a. The County of Hawaii has indicated that the South Kona District on the island of Hawaii is currently undergoing an increase in residential development on the island of Hawaii. These areas currently do not have adequate flood hazard maps for some of the areas. Without adequate technical flood hazard maps, the sponsor will be in a tenuous position of considering future developments and land use planning. If improvements are constructed in the future, the risk for flood damages and cost of flood insurance may be high. The sponsor will commit to providing contributed non-Federal funds to supplement the federal funds to achieve the desired scope of the investigation. b. The purpose of this study is to identify the major flood hazards within the floodplain study area of the South Kona District. The study will identify the floodplain limits for the 10-, 25-, 50-, 100-, and 500- year flood events. The County of Hawaii intends to use the results of the study to amend the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Flood Insurance Rate Maps. This study was requested by the Department of Public Works, County of Hawaii and is authorized under Floodplain Management Services Program, Section 206 of the Flood Control Act of 1960, as amended. A Letter Agreement was signed by the County of Hawaii and the Corps of Engineers on July 12, 2007 to conduct the study. c. Lidar survey mapping was conducted in late 2007 and is currently being processed and reviewed and technical floodplain analysis and mapping will begin in early 2008. The draft and final floodplain maps and reports are scheduled for completion in September and October 2008, respectively.
