Project Description
The Wailuku-Alenaio Watershed is a federally-assisted project intended to
provide flood protection to homes and properties in the upper Kaumana and
Ainako areas of East Hilo.
The Watershed project was begun in 1976. The project installed the Akolea
Road diversion, the diversion above Chongmanville, and channel work on
Waipahoehoe Stream above the Kaumana Drive bridge in the 1980s. These
improvements have reduced flood damages in the Wailuku-Alenaio Watershed.
A revision to the Wailuku-Alenaio Watershed Plan was requested by the project
sponsors to protect homes along Kaumana Drive. Hence, the current Kaumana
Drive Flood Protection Project is intended to provide long-term flood protection to
homes along the north side of Kaumana Drive between Chong Street and an
area above Wilder Road.
Project Status
A Flood Protection Plan and Environmental Assessment for the Kaumana Drive
area are being prepared in 2006-2007.
