County Sponsors Informational Meeting on Flooding in South Kona
The County Department of Public Works will host a public meeting on water
conservation, soil erosion and flooding Thursday, September 21, 6:00 to 7:30
p.m., in the Konawaena Elementary School Cafeteria in Kealakekua.
In recent years, as a result of heavier than normal rainfalls in short time spans,
homes and farms on Hokukano Road and near Greenwell Farms and
Konawaena High School have been affected by flooding. The September 21
meeting will provide an opportunity for the County to share information about
National Flood Insurance Programs, as well as address community concerns.
Guest speakers for the meeting include:
• Jiro Sumada, Deputy Director, County Department of Public Works on
community issues and concerns.
• Galen Kuba, Engineering Division Chief of Public Works, on a Coastal
Zone Non point Pollution Control Program, Urban Runoff and a National
Flood Insurance Program;
• Jeff Knowles, Director for the Natural Resources Conservation Service,
who will address Federally -funded programs and provide information
regarding water conservation, soil erosion and water runoff mitigation
measures;
Greg Hendrickson, conservation, tax attorney-at-law and manager for
Hokukano Ranch who will share their recent flood control measures to
capture water from several areas on the slopes of Mauna Loa;
Community comment and input is sought. Please attend the September 21
meeting or send your questions/comments to isumada co.hawaii.hi.us.
Handouts on the Hawaii County Code pertinent to grubbing and grading and soil
erosion control will be available at the meeting.
