Did you ever wonder what is available if you are no longer able to drive? How do I get to my doctor? Buy Groceries? CSE’s Transportation provides individuals 60 years and over who, for a variety of factors such as illness or disabilities, unable to use conventional means of transportation or lack of resources necessary to reach needed services. Our CSE staff will also provide transportation services to persons with disabilities under 60 years of age in the Hilo and Kona districts and with limited services in our outer districts on a priority basis. Priorities are given in the following order: medical care, access to resource agencies to qualify for benefits/services, essential shopping assistance and other needs. Kupuna News 2 Information and Assistance (808) 961-8777 Emergency Evacuation Update List CSE is a part of the Hawai‘i County Civil Defense response team. We have been working hard to make sure our Emergency Evacuation Assistance list is up to date. We don’t want to miss you if you are in need of transportation assistance in the event of a natural disaster or a Civil Defense emergency. Be sure to call our CSE staff at 961-8777 in East Hawai‘i or 323-4320 in West Hawai‘i if you need to be on our Emergency Evacuation Assistance List. Although voluntary, we also encourage all of you to register for the County of Hawai‘i Emergency Notification System “Blackboard Connect.” This system will quickly notify the public in the event of an emergency. Hurricane Season Runs from June 1 to November 30 The hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30. According to the Climate Prediction Center, there is a very good chance the weather system affected by El Nino will continue through this summer, this system increases the chance of cyclones in Hawai‘i. This is a good time to prepare your emergency evacuation kits for this upcoming hurricane season. According to the “Hurricanes: Unleashing Nature’s Fury, A Preparedness Guide” you should plan to leave if you live in: • A poorly constructed building • A coastal evacuation zone, near a stream, river, or areas that a flood prone. • A high rise building (winds are stronger) And if you are evacuating to a shelter, some items you should bring: • First Aid Kit • Medication, prescriptions • Baby food and diapers • Toiletries • Battery powered radio and cell phone • Flashlights • Extra batteries • Blanket or sleeping bag · Identification • Copies of important documents such as insurance papers • Cash, credit card. • Games, and books According to “Homeowner’s Handbook to prepare for Natural Hazards” other items you should consider including in your evacuation kit: • 1 gallon water/day per person • 3 - 7 days supply of nonperishable food and any special dietary food, can opener, infant formula. • Prescription eyewear. • List of medications, special medical information, medical care directives, and health insurance card. • Personal hygiene items • Change of clothes, towels. Kupuna News 3 July-September 2015 Senior Companion 41st Recognition Luncheon This year the Senior Companion Program is celebrating the 41st volunteer recognition luncheon on Oahu at the Ala Moana Hotel, on May 21 and 22, 2015. This special recognition luncheon is a joint luncheon with the Foster Grandparent Program which is celebrating the 50th anniversary. Special guests at the event include First Lady, Dawn Ige, who will be reading the Governor’s Proclamation, and Wendy Spencer, CEO of Corporation of National and Community Services. Four of Big Island’s seniorcompanions, will be attending this event,they are Odetta Peralta, Edith Miller, Shirley Stillman, and Adoracion Agregado. WANT TO BE A SENIOR COMPANION?? If you have time available in your days and wish to make a tremendous difference in someone’s life, while earning addition income, you are just the person we are looking for! CSE has been assisting the Department of Human Services, Senior Companion Program for over 30 years and validates the importance of independent living. Think about it, now you can help others stay independent too. Senior Companions can expect to provide services like transportation, escorting to and from appointments and errands, simple meal preparation, medication reminders, assisting with reading mail and other documents, personal care and socialization. The benefits of becoming a Senior Companion are compensation with a non-taxable stipend, meal allowance, transportation allowance, annual physical exam, paid training, vacation and sick leave, accident and liability insurance and an annual recognition. If you are 55 years or older, able and willing to serve 15 hours a week, on limited income (less than $26,840 per person per year, couples $36,180), physically and mentally healthy and willing to accept supervision, then the Senior Companion Program is for you…… Join this journey of helping others...call CSE South Hilo office at 961-8777 or our Kona office at 323-4320 for more information. The 2015 Big Island Senior Stars Talent Show was filled with entertaining solo and group performances that wowed the packed room. This years event was held at Aunty Sally’s Lu‘au Hale on May 6, 2015. 200 seniors from around the island came together to participate and attend the successful event. Solo and group performances were awarded with prizes for their outstanding performances. Placing 1st and 2nd in the 9 ball tournament; Mamerto Macanas and Bob Terukina (Pictured Below) 3rd Annual Mayor’s Cup Senior Softball Tournament a Home Run! This January brought 12 teams of seniors from across the country to Makae‘o Park in Kailua-Kona for the 3rd Annual Mayor’s Cup Senior Softball Tournament sponsored by the Hawai‘i Island United Way. This was the first year that the tournament hosted a Women’s Division in addition to Men’s 60 and Men’s 70+ Division. Teams joined the tournament from as far away as Canada, Michigan, Ohio, California and Oahu. Big Island team Hawaiian Pride retained their title as champions in the 70+ Division and California Reds battled local team Kona Gold to win the Men’s 60 Division Championship for the second time. In the Women’s Division Hot Lava battled to win the first Championship slot for the ladies. Thanks to all participating teams: Green Hornets, Hot Lava, Blue Waves, Napua, Hawai‘i Masters, Kona Gold, St. Albert Old Buzzards, Kona Legends, California Reds, Mr. K’s Moneyball, Hawaiian Pride and West Hawai‘i 70’s. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. and performances begin at 5:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 per person per night. Solo performances and the International Ho‘olaule‘a are scheduled for Wednesday night and the Royal Court appearance will precede the Kane, Wahine, and Mixed group competitions on Thursday night. For this year’s theme “Ola Kupa‘āina” A Person of the Land, each halau had to find a song to share about the place they call home. She brings a wealth of experience working in the Nutrition Program since 1991 as a Site Manager, then in 2008 overseeing the Meals on Wheels Program for Big Island as the CSPA II. Feel the breeze, smell the flowers, hear the birds, and appreciate this wonderful life. Retirement is also the beginning of a journey of self-discovery. So I will go ahead, and rediscover myself. Life holds a lot in store when you have the time to explore its full potential. It has been a privilege to work with such a great group of people. I wish you all continued success and good health.
