Thank you for taking the time to answer these questions.
1. In your experience, how prevalent is the issue of squatting and adverse possession?
It's an epidemic.
2. In what communities and districts do squatting and adverse possession appear most
prominent?
Puna
3. When you receive notice or a complaint about these situations, what is your normal
course of action?
Per attorneys, start eviction process. If squatters are present, I ask them to leave.
4. What kinds of complications have arisen in the past that have prevented a successful
resolution of the situation?
1) Squatters have no where to go.
2) There is a new group in town, having to do with the Federal postal regulations and they
have actual federal documentation that allows squatters and other homeless people to
remain on the property.
5. For those situations that have been successfully resolved, please describe what happened.
I had court documentation and told squatters they had to leave.
6. What happens when you contact or try to contact the owner of record?
The attorneys are the ones who try to contact the bank & the owner. A lot of times, the
owner has moved or deceased.
7. What solutions would you recommend?
1) We work with the police to get them out.
2) New laws be enacted in allowing us the power to post "No Trespassing" signs on
behalf of banks/pro se so that the police can get involved as squatters are trespassing.
8. Are there any other comments you would like to make?
We cannot enlist the help of the police officers as this is a civil matter.
