Thank you for taking the time to answer these questions.
1. In your experience, how prevalent is the issue of squatting and adverse possession?
We don't know the prevalence but we are quite certain there is a squatter occupying a
house a few doors away.
2. In what communities and districts do squatting and adverse possession appear most
prominent?
We don't know but there appears to be one in our neighborhood, Kurtistown area.
3. When you receive notice or a complaint about these situations, what is your normal
course of action?
Do nothing but talk with neighbors.
4. What kinds of complications have arisen in the past that have prevented a successful
resolution of the situation?
Police arrived but squatters remain.
5. For those situations that have been successfully resolved, please describe what happened.
None successfully resolved.
6. What happens when you contact or try to contact the owner of record?
We have not tried but our neighbors have.
7. What solutions would you recommend?
It should be illegal for a person to move into a home that is not theirs without permission
of the owner. If someone is suspected of being a squatter, they should be required to
prove otherwise through documentation within a reasonable time period.
8. Are there any other comments you would like to make?
We are very glad that the problem came up in the newspaper so people can
respond and take this survey. Although we do not have proof that squatters or their
associates have robbed or attempted to rob homes, we noticed an increase in
suspicious visits to homes and an increase in robberies after the squatters settled
nearby.
