Thank you for taking the time to answer these questions.
1. In your experience, how prevalent is the issue of squatting and adverse possession?
Very prevalent and organized. Our group has forced out squatters from 2 homes in our
neighborhood
One home had stolen car parts and power tools in it after the squatters were made to
leave. The police were powerless. The banks have finally taken an interest and we now
have a resource person to call when squatters move in
2. In what communities and districts do squatting and adverse possession appear most
prominent?
Puna HPP
3. When you receive notice or a complaint about these situations, what is your normal
course of action?
We organized ourselves on our street as no one is able to help thru proper channels
4. What kinds of complications have arisen in the past that have prevented a successful
resolution of the situation?
Only the owner can make a complaint. They don't as they are losing their property
5. For those situations that have been successfully resolved, please describe what happened.
A showdown of physical strength in numbers and constant confrontation from home
owners with the squatters. When they tried to sell their stolen goods we marched up to
the house and took photos
This is not what you want to hear but, we were successful
6. What happens when you contact or try to contact the owner of record?
They do not respond.
7. What solutions would you recommend?
The police are complicit. A police officer (Fuiava) lives in a squatter home off Makuu.
There is an organized ring of untouchables. They hire a yard man to mow the lawns and
provide bogus leases. There needs to be a thorough investigation but HPD does not want
the publicity
8. Are there any other comments you would like to make?
Good luck. the only answer is vigilante style justice. Would love a proper channel
to go through
