Power, Viewplanes, & Erosion Control Subcommittee report
to NK CDP AC meeting on July 13, 2015
POWER
On June 13, subcommittee members Carter Collins & Toni Withington had an
informal meeting with HELCO president Jay Ignacio about alternative energy
sources for Kohala.
EROSION CONTROL
Upolu sediment mitigation project -
On June 16, Gail Byrne Baber and several Kohala High School students working
on the Upolu sediment mitigation project toured over 2 dozen sediment basins at
Kohala Estates with subcommittee member Susan Fischer. On June 22, Gail & her
students spent the day in the field learning about sediment check dams with the
Kohala Watershed crew and the next day the students worked with the crew to
install 6 check dams at Upolu.
VIEWPLANES
While at the Kohala Estates sediment basins, the students observed methods of
combining viewplane preservation with erosion control, where building sites are
planned to view across basins reserved for vegetation.
