Blessing and Groundbreaking Ceremony Held for Hilo
Municipal Golf Course Improvement Project
Hawaii County Mayor Billy Kenoi, County Councilman Dennis "Fresh" Onishi, State
Sen. Gilbert Kahele and State Rep. Clift Tsuji joined other dignitaries Friday, August 14,
for a public blessing and groundbreaking ceremony for upcoming improvements to the
Hilo Municipal Golf Course.
Golfers will benefit from four new putting greens, clubhouse, bathrooms, bridges for the
cart course, rain shelters, and accessible walkways at the driving range. Lead
contractor Jacobsen Construction Co. Inc. also will build a new cart -storage building,
replace course waterlines and the Kawailani Street fence, and install new fencing
fronting Haihai Street. The project is expected to be finished in November 2016.
Construction work will require converting the 18 -hole course to a temporary 9 -hole
course between February and May 2016.
Improving Hawaii County's only public golf course is the latest example of expanded
recreational offerings since Mayor Kenoi took office. On August 12, the Department of
Parks and Recreation broke ground on a new neighborhood park for Holualoa's Alii Kai
Subdivision.
