MAHALO TO OUR WONDERFUL VOLUNTEERS!
Coordinated Services for the Elderly Satellite Office Reopens
Our satellite office at the Pāhoa Senior Center reopened on Monday, June 29, 2015. It’s great
to be back after a temporary closure. Thank you to the Kupunas and public for your patience and
understanding. Coordinated Services is back to provide Outreach, Senior ID Card Issuance,
Information and Assistance, Income Tax assistance and much, much more. Stop by and see
what kinds of activities are available at the center or just to say “HELLO.”
What’s Important for You in 2016 Need help with figuring out what your options are with Medicare,
Medigap, Medicare Advantage Plans, Medicare Part D, Part B and how to make sense of it?
Coordinated Services can help you with most of these questions. It can get overwhelming just thinking
about it. Important things to remember: Does your plan work for you now? Are you happy with the coverage?
Which insurance plan does your Primary Physician or Doctor’s accept?
When is the OPEN ENROLLMENT Period?
Mark your calendar with these important dates October 15, 2015 to December 7, 2015. If your current
plan meets all your needs and your plan is available in 2016, then there is no need to make changes.
From now until then, start comparing your coverage with other options or cost. Look out for your Medicare
and You 2016 booklet coming in the mail to help you decide. If you feel this maybe too much to do, please
call our Coordinated Services in South Hilo at 961-8777 or our West Hawai‘i Civic Center Office at
323-4320 and will be glad to assist you.

TEST YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF
POWERS OF ATTORNEY
A. ARE for financial matters, NOT health care decisions
B. ARE NOT a license to steal
C. MUST be honored by banks & other financial institutions*
D. STOP automatically when the Principal dies
E. CAN be rescinded or changed
F. ALL of the above
GENERAL POWERS OF ATTORNEY:
Hooray! if you answered (F) “ALL of the above”
The legal document known as a Power of Attorney allows a person of sound mind (called the “Principal”)
to designate a representative (called an “Agent”) to act for them in financial matters if they are unable to
act for themselves. Hawai‘i has a new law that improves the protections and the use-ability of Powers of Attorney.
Except for certain rare circumstances, it requires financial institutions to honor Powers of Attorney presented
to them. It also makes it very clear that the powers granted to the Agent are to be used only for the benefit of
the Principal, not for the benefit of the Agent or the Agent’s friends or family. Misusing a Power of Attorney
is crime and can be criminally prosecuted. It is a serious responsibility to appoint someone as your agent.
Be sure you think carefully about who you want to appoint. Are they trustworthy?
Will they act in your best interest? Be sure also that they understand what their role will be as your agent.
Legal Aid Society of Hawai‘i can help most seniors get these documents prepared free of charge (they can
also prepare health care directives for free).
*For more information, pick up a copy of the booklet “Hawai‘i Uniform Power of Attorney Handbook”
available at the Hawai‘i County Office on Aging, CSE and Legal Aid offices county-wide.

Health and Safety Tips for the Holidays
The holidays are quickly approaching, here are
some holiday safety and health reminders and tips from the Center for Disease Control
and the National Safety Council:
* Wash your hands: frequently to help avoid
getting sick/spreading germs; wash your hands with soap and clean, running water
for at least 20 seconds.
* Manage stress: Keep your commitments and spending to a manageable level.
* Travel safely: Don’t drink and drive nor let someone else drink and drive. Wear a seat belt when
you ride/drive a vehicle.
* Get check-ups: Prevention and early detection via physical exams and screening can catch possible
problems at an early stage.
* Vaccinations: Center for Disease Control
recommends an annual flu vaccination. People should get vaccinated soon after
the vaccine is available; it takes about two weeks after the vaccination for antibodies
to develop.
* Fire safety: (a) Keep candles away from children, pets, curtains, trees, and walk
ways. Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children. (b) Never leave your
stove, fireplace, or candle unattended. (c) Install smoke detectors and test them monthly, replace
the batteries twice a year.
* Decorating Safety: Position your tree away from fireplaces, and other heat sources. Use a step
stool or ladder when hanging decoration (do not climb on furniture).
* Avoid using breakable, and/or small ornaments on lower branches where toddlers and pets can
touch them. If you are using an artificial tree, choose one that is tested and labeled as fire resistant;
if the tree has a built-in electrical wiring, it should have the Underwriters Laboratory label
(UL). Use no more than three light sets on one extension cord. To avoid tripping, run the extension
cord against the wall. Check lights for broken sockets, frayed/bare wires; replace damaged light sets.
* Handle and prepare food safely: when preparing meals, wash your hands and preparation surfaces frequently.
Avoid cross contamination, keep raw meats away from ready-to-eat foods and surfaces. Do not defrost
food at room temperature; thaw in the refrigerator, in cold water, or the microwave. Cook foods to the proper
temperature. Do not leave perishable foods out for more than two hours.
* Eat healthy: Limit fat, salt, and sugar intake. Choose fresh fruit instead of candy and pastries.
* Be active: Be active for at least 2 1/2 hours per week.
