HomeMy WebLinkAbout2015-11-09 PVEC Subcommitee ReportPower, Viewplanes, & Erosion Control subcommittee report to the November 9, 2015 NK CDP Action Committee meeting POWER - Solar Matter's initiative was paid a second visit at the home of Carter Collins by Jay Ignacio, President of HELCO. The parties are continuing to discuss Solar Matter's proposal for a solarized bikeway between North Kohala and North Kona. Dutch Kuyper, President of Paniolo Power, has recently indicated by letter that he will soon meet with team leader Carter, along with Paniolo Power's upper management, to further discuss the bikeway. Members of the subcommittee are continuing to follow the proceedings of the Public Utilities Commission on Hawaii's energy future. VIEW PLANES - A cellphone tower has been proposed for the top of Kailapa on Hawaiian Homelands, but reportedly is unlikely due to the constraints of prior agreements with Sandwich Isles Communications. EROSION CONTROL - The Airports Division has put out soil control barriers, including stone filters and "straw wattles", at numerous locations at Upolu and documented the locations on a map. These types of barriers have worked well at the Kawaihae Pelekane project when staked well, so each roll has been staked to the ground at least 5 times to secure it in place. The next heavy rainfall will show how effective these measures turn out to be, but hopefully they will kick start the natural recovery process into gear a bit faster. The Airports Division has more of these materials available in storage and will be purchasing more for additional installations. Kohala Lihikai is working with school kids to prepare signs about the erosion control project.
