Dear Duane Kanuha, Planning Director:
I am a part-time resident of Hilo, and a property owner. I also reside in Golden, Colorado and we
recently went through a similar community planning process. The hardest part of getting the
community involved was getting them to define a solid and representative vision. We secured a grant
from the Orton Family Foundation to help with this process. Orton just announced the new awards for
their Heart & Soul program, which might be just the project for Hawaii Island. They awarded $130,000
to tiny McComb, Ohio and you can find out more about the program on the Orton Family Foundation
website.
Good luck with the new general plan. If you can get enough participation from Hawaii's diverse
population, it will be a great plan.
