When John Winter met with Sal Panem in February on concerns of the PWR committee,
he asked Mr. Panem if there is a possibility of getting some signs along the highway
naming the larger drainages/gulches here in North Kohala. We'd like to have the big ones
to the east recognized, beginning with Halawa, then Waiaohia, A' amakoa,
Waikani/Niuli'i, and finally Waikama. We believe it is important to keep these names
prominent. They considered the name options (_Gulch, _Bridge, etc.) and decided that
just the Hawaiian name would be best. We'd prefer one sign at each entrance. And asked
him to please let us know if such signs are feasible.
Thanks John for asking Mr. Panem to put this on his list of things to do.
A brief meeting was held on February 25, 2016 @ the Senior Center in Kapaau.. We
discussed possibly going out into the Community to talk to Kupuna and see if they would
be willing to share cultural & historical information that we could record and maybe print
a pamphlet/manual to house @ the Library. After the incidence of vandals defacing some
historical signs, etc. in Kohala, we felt it may not be a good idea to put up signs at these
areas of historical significance but rather document the information and make it available
to anyone who may want to read about it.
