In the coming months, CSE will be assisting seniors who qualify to access some extra help.
Staff are ready to assist you in applying for special benefits such as: Senior Brown Bags
Supplemental Nutrition Program, Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP/Senior
Produce) through the Hawai‘i Island Food Basket; LIHEAP-Low-Income Energy Assistance
Program and the Solar Water Heater programs through Hawai‘i County Economic Opportunity
Council. Please contact your district CSE office or call our main office at 961-8777 to learn
about these programs.

Confused about what exactly does your plan cover? Why does it seem like my medication cost

Ho‘opono Services for the Blind is a branch of the Department of Human Services (DHS)
Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) that provides comprehensive and specialized
services that meet the varied needs of consumers across the State who are blind, both deaf and
blind or visually impaired. To further inquiry on how Ho‘opono may be able to help you,
contact your local DHS office at 974-6444 or stop by the office at 75 Aupuni Street. You can

West Hawai‘i CSE Volunteer Recognition
Luncheon theme is, “You Raise Us Up.” The
luncheon will be held at the West Hawai‘i
Civic Center on May 12, 2016.
Senior Companion Program
Recognition Luncheon
This year’s Senior Companion Recognition
Luncheon will be held mid May. The Big Island
has a total of ten senior companions around the
island [2 in Hilo, 2 in Puna, 1 in Honoka‘a, 1 in
Waimea, and 4 in Kona (3 of which are new
companions)]. The senior companions assist
other seniors who are more fragile, while
receiving a stipend of $2.65 per hour. If you are

ERS Teachers & Volunteer Recognition Luncheon 2016
Over 250 seniors attended the “Tropical Christmas”
luncheon that was held at Aunty Sally’s Lu‘au Hale.
Elderly Recreation Services Teachers and Volunteers
were honored for all their hard work and dedication to
the program. All that attended enjoyed a delicious lunch,
awesome door prizes, and special performances by the
Pomaikai Seniors, Tanya Paltin’s Tai Chi group, Arlene
Yonamine’s “Happy” Line Dance and ERS’s the Hawaiian 12 Days of
Christmas. We look forward to another great year working with all of
our wonderful volunteers and teachers. Thank you for all that you do!!!

The Splendor of Christmas
County Council Member Valerie Poindexter sponsored an elegant luncheon for over 150 seniors from Pāpa‘ikou, Pepe‘ekeō, Pāpa‘aloa,
Pa‘auilo, Laupāhoehoe and Honoka‘a Senior Clubs and Nutrition sites. The program included local entertainer, Augie T who kept the
seniors laughing, Kumu Maile Canario dancing hula, and many more great performers. The seniors enjoyed a fun filled day with great company.
Tee Up for the Big Island Senior Golf!
The Big Island Senior Golf Tournament is back! The tournament co-sponsored by the Big Island Candies
Foundation, Waikoloa Kings Course, and the County of Hawai‘i, Dept. of Parks & Recreation, Elderly
Activities Division-Special Programs, will be held Friday, May 20 at the Waikoloa Kings Course. This event
is open to all Big Island residents aged 55 or older.
Residents can enter the tournament as a foursome or individually. The tournament fee is $95 per person which
includes greens fees, cart, lunch, and gratuities. Slots are available to the first 140 entrants on a first come first
serve basis. Tournament format is 18 holes; low net with an established handicap index as of March 2016, the
maximum handicap index is 40. All USGA and special course rules will apply. Golfers will be divided into 4 flights;
men and women aged 55-64, and men and women aged 65+. Round-trip transportation from Hilo will be available
for $5 per person and will depart from the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
Tournament entry forms will be available beginning March 15th at the West Hawai‘i Elderly Recreation office
(West Hawai‘i Civic Center, Bldg. B), Hilo Kamanā Senior Center, Kea‘au Community Center and at the Nā‘ālehu
or Waimea Coordinated Services for the Elderly office. Tournament fees must accompany completed registration
fees to be confirmed. The deadline for submission of entry forms and payments is April 22, 2016. Completed forms
and payments will only be accepted at the West & East Hawai‘i Elderly Recreation offices.

STEP
The Senior Training & Employment Program (STEP) assists eligible, unemployed, low-income job seekers
55 and over in getting temporary but current work experience. STEP helps seniors receive training to allow
them to return to the workforce at large. It provides temporary, paid, part-time work experience in community service.
