This was one of many activities we enjoyed during our Waimea excursion to the Cherry Blossom Festival. A great day to share in the shuttle bus tour, visiting many craft booths and taking in the well planned entertainment. Of course, the blooming trees were a beautiful sight. Five Grandmas took branches either to plant or as bouquets. Holiday Celebration! A festive Christmas Party was held and well attended at the Coqui’s Hideaway restaurant. Our waitress (standing) was very attentive and served us well. Christmas Craft Time Yes, another holiday activity was taking in the Christmas Craft Fair at Hilo High School. The Christmas color red was everywhere. Kupuna News 3 April - June 2009 TRANSPORTATION SERVICES CSE is most known for providing essential Transportation Services for the elderly and individuals with disabilities who are unable to obtain other means of transportation. In order to keep up with the increasing demand CSE received; one 12 passenger raised-roof van from a 2004 DOT Grant Proposal for the Hāmākua District; received approval in the 2008-9 budget from the county to purchase a 12 passenger raised-roof van for the Puna District; & received good news from the State Department of Transportation (DOT) that both 2005 & 2006 Grant Proposals were approved awarding CSE a total of three 14 passenger vans for the districts of Kona, Hilo, & N. Kohala. CSE has also submitted a 2007 FTA /Section 5310 application to acquire another 2 vehicles for other districts to replace their aging fleet. Transportation is provided for medical appointments, essential shopping, resource agencies, and other needed errands. CSE allows seniors and those with disabilities to remain in the home independently with our assistance. Suggested contribution amount for all services is $2.00 per trip, however any amount contributed is greatly appreciated especially with the cost of gas and repairs. “Mahalo for all your help!!!” ASSISTING SENIORS IN OBTAINING BENEFITS Through the years, CSE has enhanced the lives of the seniors of the Big Island, and their families, by finding the help they need to live independently with dignity. Many of our seniors are unaware of benefits that may be available, or what they may be entitled to receive. Through CSE’s intake and assessment process, CSE staff identifies client needs, completes appropriate forms and applications, and/or makes appropriate referrals to meet the needs identified. Often seniors are reluctant to ask for help, although they have contributed to their communities all throughout their lifetime. CSE works together with the other outstanding service agencies of the Aging Network on the Big Island to ensure that the seniors of Hawai‘i County needs are met. SENIOR COMPANION PROGRAM (SCP) The need is increasing for Senior Companion volunteers across our community. Senior Companions assist frail seniors to remain independent as long as possible. Benefits of volunteering include; stipend of $2.75 per hour; free annual physical; travel + meal allowance; paid training; free supplemental insurance; and an annual recognition event. And of course the benefit of knowing that you are making a huge difference in another senior’s life! Please consider applying. Guidelines include unemployed individuals 60+ with an income of less than $16,150/yr and are able/willing to serve up to 20 hrs a week. Please call CSE at 961-8777 if you are interested in becoming a Senior Companion. SCP is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service and is sponsored state-wide by the Hawai‘i Department of Human Services (DHS) and is coordinated locally by CSE. Special Programs Welcoming a new addition to Special Programs… A new, smiling face at the West Hawai‘i Elderly Activities Division’s Special Programs office, is none other than Recreation Technician II, Kelly Hudik. Kelly migrated from Northwest Ohio after working at the Parks & Recreation there for 10 years. She decided to escape the cold weather and move to Kailua-Kona where there’s no excuse not to play outside and go run, bike, or swim. Her first day at the West Hawai‘i Special Programs office was on September 16th, just a few days prior to the Hawai‘i Kupuna Hula Festival. Not truly knowing what was in store for her, her real orientation began immediately upon her coming onto the job, and quickly grasping the “haps” of the event, besides taking the responsibility of overseeing the main sales and ticket tables during the two days at the Festival. That’s what you call, OJT (on-the-job-training)!! Besides assisting the SP’s Program Director, and her counterpart in E. Hawai‘i, to coordinate and implement island-wide, statewide, and international events, Kelly’s responsibility takes her out to 10 Sr. centers (from North Kohala to Pahala), as well as, to all of the West HI Nutrition sites to disseminate program events information and to encourage their participation. We are deeply proud of Kelly passing her first survivor’s test at the last Kupuna Hula Festival, and look forward towards her continued energies and dedication to the program and division in the years ahead. WELCOME KELLY!!
