Hamakua CDP Steering Committee
Thank you for allowing the community to participate in the decision making process of the Hakalau
Point.
We are residents of the Hakalau Plantation Community, being one of the first to build on Hanamalo
Loop in 2006. We purchased our lot through a lottery process from Mr.Shropshire.We met many
Hawaiian residents who either had parents or relatives from the original Hakalau Village. These
historians shared with us their stories of the history prior to the Bay Park being developed by the local
citizens. We also encountered young, local Hawaiians who had hoped that lots would be reserved on a
sliding scale basis so they too could afford to build here as was promised by Mr.Shropshire.(Obviously
this did not happen.)
A few weeks ago,the neighborhood opened their houses to the visiting relatives and friends of the
original village. We heard about where they lived and what their jobs were in this village. They came
from Hilo,Kona,Oahu,Kauai,Florida,California and even Japan. We shared lunch with them at the Jodo
Mission. They were elated to see the Bay had been turned into a park with a tribute to the Hakalau Mill.

The Jodo Mission has also encouraged all neighbors to use their facility for community gatherings along
with a place to serve seniors lunches.
History Matters)Even the foreman's house is now designated as a historical landmark for preservation
purposes.
The idea of continuing an industrial zone in a residential area rich with history seems not only absurd
but contrary to the surrounding population. We have families with young children from infancy to 15
years old.On any given day,the Hakalau Bay Park hosts families for picnics, surfing and swimming. On a
daily average this area has between twenty to fifty cars visiting the bay below. Speed Bumps were
placed on the Old Highway so children could play safely in from of their homes.
The bluff could definitely be an open area for a designated park with flushing bathrooms, play and
horseshoe areas along with baseball or soccer fields. Some of the area along the bluff should be
protected for natural beauty and erosion protection.
The original builders of the Hakalau Plantation did NOT sanction building on the cliffs.
Currently the warehouses have workers spending the night and yet these units are not designated for
living or around the dock working quarters with adequate bathroom facilities. Drainage has been going
into the ocean.
The police were also called when the warehouse had a rave party with a loud band.Who was
responsible for allowing the warehouse to host a band?

Cattlemen may need a new butcher or slaughter house although the possibility of bringing cattle trucks
across the bridge that can no longer weight bear large cement trucks along with the waste disposal
would not be beneficial to the community.
I truly doubt that any rancher including my father would want a butcher or slaughter house in their
backyard so why would a proposal of this nature be even considered.
Before permitting a brewery, city and county ordinances take into consideration the smell factor, the
traffic and parking issues along with the population and control of visitors. In rural areas, the integrity of
the neighborhood is held in high regard.
Thank you for your consideration in keeping our neighborhood a family friendly area.
Sincerely,
Ri and Faith J es
