Introductions were made around a food table prior to the meeting, and at the circular arrangement of chairs in the room. All present were impressed with the high level of experience and commitment expressed toward the future of Volcano by each person. Puna Community Development Plan, Action Committee member, Yumi Kawano, was formally inaugurated by the Hawaii County Council into the 9 -member Action committee. She is one of two Volcano residents who will represent our area. We are fortunate to have Yumi and XXXXXX Rivera as our representatives on the AC and to have Yumi as a member of the VLRP Planning Team. The VLRP is an official subcommittee of the PCDP Action Committee, which is a special commission of the Hawaii County Planning Department. Community Survey results reaffirmed widespread support for the Volcano Long Range Plan, and particularly for the proposed activities. Discussion indicated special interest in forest protection, building design in the core village, and protection of the historic character of the village in general. Special mention was made of the Hale Ohia designated State Residential Historic District near the Haunani/Old Volcano Highway intersection. Regular monthly meetings of the VLRP Planning Team will resume January 19, 7 PM, a Third Thursday evening. The group wanted to change the regular meeting day from Thursday to Wednesday, to avoid conflicting with numerous other evening activities that seem to take place in Volcano on Thursday evenings. But, a subsequent call to the Cooper Center person in charge indicated Wednesday evenings are already scheduled for other groups. This issue will be a topic for the January 19th meeting. The agenda for the January 191" meeting will be to identify the three or four activities we will work to implement in the coming year. We expect these will be to support the Rotary Club of Volcano in establishing a mobile health care service in Volcano, defining how we can support the CERT and FIREWISE programs in Volcano, drafting guidelines for a forest protection special designation, drafting design guidelines for new commercial developments, and maybe others if there is sufficient interest. Other agenda items will include finding an editor who will update the 2014 VLRP, designating a successor VLRP Chairperson and administrative person. Submitted by D Taylor, Chairperson
