Subject: Photovoltaic (PV) energy systems

Inspections for building and electrical may be requested in any order following
installation of panels of the roof.
The following clarifications related to PV energy systems are provided:
A. PV – ROOF MOUNTED
1. PLAN REVIEW AND APPROVALS
Per Norman Scheel Structural Engineer, Norman J. Scheel, PE, SE, and the
certification, specifications and details dated June 1, 2012: The SnapNrack
PV Mounting System is approved for use and may be installed on
residential homes with gable roofs in Wind Zones B, and C, and Seismic
Zones A, B, C, D and do not require a licensed Hawai‘i state architect or
structural engineer’s review and approval (a professional stamp) when
designed and installed per the manufacturer’s recommended installation span

tables and guidelines.
A licensed Hawaii state architect or structural engineer must review and
approve applications within ¼ mile of the ocean (Wind Exposure D), or
Seismic Zone “E”.
