ThefollowingclarificationsaretheresultofdiscussionsatthepublicPVworkshopsconductedon
September17,August 14,and15,2012,bytheDepartmentofPublicWorks:
A.PV-GENERAL
1.Inspection
Buildingandelectricalinspectionsmayberequestedinanyorderfollowing
installationofpanelsonroof.
B.PV-ROOFMOUNTED
1.Inspection
BuildingDivisionhasdecidedtoprovideladderstoinspectors.Intheinterim,
contractors,pleasecontinuetoprovideladdersandfallprotectionatthetime
ofinspection.
2.PlanReviewandApproval
Perthemanufacturers'literatureandICCEvaluationReportsforIronRidge
MountingSystemsandmountingattachments--Unirac and Solar Mount
systemsareapprovedforuseandmaybeinstalledtoamaximumheightof30'in
WindZonesA,B,CorDandSeismicZonesA,B,C,orD. Notrequireis a
licensedHawai'istatearchitectorstructuralengineerreviewandapproval(a
professionalstamp). ApplicationswithinWindExposureD(1/4mileofthe
ocean)and/orSeismicZonesEorFrequirealicensedHawai'istatearchitector
structuralengineerreviewandapproval.
3.HawaiiEngineeringGroup,Inc.presidentAtherR.Dar,PE,certification,
specifications, anddetailsprovidedonSeptember5,2012--GraceSolarGrasol
roofmountingstandardaluminum(6005-T5)railisapprovedforuse,andmay
beinstalledonresidentialhomeswithgableroofsinWindZonesA,B,C,orD
andSeismicZonesA,B,C,DorE. Approvalandprofessionalstampisnot
requiredfromalicensedHawaiistatearchitectandorstructuralengineer.
4.Murar Engineering & Design Inc, Kevin MurarPE & SE, revised the SunEarth
SolarStrut photovoltaic racking system and found it in accordance with wind and
seismic design requirements for Hawai‘i island. The requirements are acceptable
up to a seismic design category E or less.
