*Kindly include the following in my previous 'Long Range Physical Development' email.*
* Given cities worldwide are reducing, reusing, repurposing and recycling their 'waste', Hilo and Hawaii County could learn creative, efficient and
consumer-friendly recycling methods from other municipalities. Citizens should not have to drive more than a mile or two to recycle plastic, metal,
glass and cardboard/paper. The Planning Department could plan for an
easy, convenient, efficient recycling infrastructure. You and our community at large can work to network/brainstorm
with your fellow county government agencies, Environmental Health, for
example. And you many want to include ideas from your progressive council members, such as Jen Ruggles and Representative Russell Rudderman. Rather than 'develop' more land for
research, commercial and/or residential additions, the planning department
could give a high priority to caring for and conserving our resources. Every neighborhood should have recycling facilities {including e waste} , perhaps to staffed with high
school and/or UHH students receiving work/study credits. The county must get creative, implementing government and/or privately operated waste management. The U.S. is the only developed country in the world that exports toxic e-waste.
Nationally 40% of all e-waste is exported to poorer countries, mostly in Asia. *Zero Waste* is a sane goal for every local government.
Single use plastic bottles and styrofoam take-out containers should be banned
or at the very least recycled. Have you looked in landfill-bound trash cans lately? So many residents simply don't have a clue about where their waste
goes. Paramountly, all of Hawaii needs a robust and energetic educational
campaign targeting Zero Waste and recycling. Print and electronic media, schools, HCC, UHH, medical and businesses all must 'get the word out', not
just for a week or a month, but for many years to come. That is sensible
long range planning. *
