C  Kailua-Kona, Hawai‘i 96740 (808) 323-4444  Fax (808) 323-4440 NEWS RELEASE April 3, 2017 Open Space Commission Seeks Suggestions for Lands to be Permanently Preserved Do you know of a special property in Hawai‘i County that should be permanently preserved? The County of Hawai‘i Public Access, Open Space and Natural Resources Preservation Commission (PONC) is seeking suggestions from the public regarding lands that should be preserved because of historic or cultural significance. Properties might qualify for permanent preservation because they offer opportunities for outdoor recreation and education, or involve public access to beaches or mountains. Such candidates for permanent preservation could be forests, beaches, coastal areas, and places of natural beauty, or involve the protection of natural resources and watershed lands or general benefits to the public. Suggestion forms are due by June 30, 2017. PONC funds are derived from 2% of Hawai‘i County’s annual real property tax revenues. Past open space purchases total 4,428 acres, and include Kahua Olohu in Nā‘ālehu town, Kahuku Coastal Property and Kāwā oceanfront parcels in Ka‘ū; Kaiholena, Pa‘o‘o and Hāwī Banyan Trees property in North Kohala; Kīpapa Park, White Sands Mauka and ‘O‘oma in North Kona; property near Waipi‘o Lookout in Hāmākua; and Pohoiki Bay in Puna. The Commission meets every other month at the Hilo County Building or the West Hawai’i Civic Center, and public testimony is welcome.
