BIG ISLAND WELCOMES HOME VIETNAM VETS and honors all Veterans You are invited to a “Welcome Home” event for our Vietnam Vets - A Commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War on November 9, 2017, starting at 9:30 AM at the Edith Kanaka‘ole Multi-Purpose Stadium. The formal recognition ceremony starts at 10 AM and will also honor all Veterans. Veteran organizations, AARP, County of Hawai‘i - Elderly Activities Division, Office of Aging, State Office of Veteran Services, Labor Alliance, DAR, HCEOC and other organizations are all working together to plan and coordinate this great event for our heroes. Veterans need to call the County Elderly Activities Division at (808) 961-8777 to register. A free luncheon for veterans and their “one” guest will be provided following the formal program. Over 300 seniors from around the island came together at Edith Kanaka‘ole Tennis Stadium to enjoy dancing, crafts and ono food. Overall it was a great day and we look forward to many more Bon Dance Festivals in the years to come. Maui Line Dance roundup at the Mayor Hannibal Tavares Community Center. 22 line dancers from Waikoloa, Waimea, Hilo and Puna danced with others from O‘ahu, Kaua‘i and Maui. Honoka‘a’s Summer Intergenerational Program consisted of the Honoka‘a Seniors and Keiki coming together to make their own ukuleles as well as learn how to play. Calvin Enoki and his helpers assisted with the making of the ukuleles. There were approximately 1,000 bystanders and players came to support the tournament for the 2 days. The tournament was divided into 3 divisions. In the “A” Division: 1st place was Hilo Pōmaika‘i, 2nd place Kohala Seniors, and 3rd place Kona Gold. In the ‘B” Division: 1st place Jackie Rey’s, 2nd place Kua‘aina and 3rd place was Pueo. In the “C’ Division: 1st place Pohaku III, 2nd place Ka Nani O Honoka‘a and 3rd place Kupuna Pride. The training included how to search for jobs, organizing your information, resume preparation, and interviewing, which included mock interviews. All of the participants gained valuable knowledge in preparing for the current job market. STEP Enrollee, Mr. Thomas Henneman is currently training as a Janitorial & Ground Maintenance Aide at County of Hawai‘i, Parks and Recreation. STEP Enrollee, Mr. Thomas Dela Cruz is currently training as a Groundskeeping Aide at County of Hawai‘i, Pana‘ewa Rainforest Zoo. The Senior Training & Employment Program (STEP) assists eligible, unemployed, low-income job seekers age 55 and over in getting temporary but current work experience. STEP helps Seniors receive training to allow them to return to the workforce at large. It provides temporary, paid, part-time work experience in community service.
